The Dove Shooting Capital

With a mainland area of 2,780,400 square kilometres, Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world. It features a vast, extremely varied landscape, ranging from steep Patagonian snow-capped mountains to tropical jungles and waterfalls to marshes and swampland. The diverse landscape is home to all manner of animals and birds, so it’s no surprise that Argentina is the most popular hunting destination globally, attracting more than 20,000 foreign hunters every year. Whether you’re looking to hunt Doves, Ducks, Pidgeons or Partridges, Argentina can offer some of the best action.

Without a doubt, the region of Cordoba, situated in the foothills of the Sierras Chicas on the Suquía River, is one of the most famous destinations for wing shooting and is often referred to as the Dove shooting capital of the world. Due to its rich agricultural land and the lack of natural predators, it’s estimated that there are 35 million eared Doves and rising in the region. The birds are a pest to farmers and the general population, so hunters are a welcome sight in the area, and it’s possible for guns to shoot them by the thousands each day.

The provinces of La Pampa in the west and Entre Rios in the south offer some of the best Duck shooting, with over thirteen different species to shoot at any given time. Add to this the fantastic shooting over pointing dogs for Perdiz; then it’s easy to see why the Argentina shooting holidays are regarded as some of the best in the world.

Below we have listed the main destinations for you to choose from.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Quarry Can You Shoot?

With its vast, diverse landscape, Argentina shooting holidays offer the travelling hunter a chance to shoot many different species of birds, depending on what region you’re visiting. The area in and around Cordoba is famous for its non-migratory Eared Doves. The lodges of Guayascate, La Dormida, Pica Zuro, Sierra Verde and La Portenita offer some of the best action. In the Cordoba region, at Montaraz lodge, you can also shoot many wild pigeons, including the White-spotted Wing and Pica Zuro Pigeons.

For the best Duck shooting in the country, look no further than Jacana Lodge. Where Do You Shoot?

The hunting takes place in many different area’s, landscapes and terrain. Eared Dove roosts in surrounding hills and mountains, but they leave to feed in nearby fields each morning. The shooting commonly occurs in the hills, flatlands and flight lines over the agricultural land, generally over cut wheat, sunflower, sorghum or corn. You await the roosting and feeding birds in their thousands.

For Ducks, you will often be shooting over decoys from a selection of comfortable and camouflaged dry blinds; there’s also the chance to shoot from sunken “Bucket blinds”, Pit blinds or platform pallet blinds situated around the ponds and lagoons.

The Season

With an estimated 32 million Eared Doves in the Cordoba area alone, it’s no surprise that the shooting is productive all year round. However, the months of August to February have exceptionally high numbers.

For Ducks and Perdiz, the season runs from May 1st to August 31st. The Perdiz shooting is excellent throughout these months, whereas the Ducks have a peak between June and August.

The Climate

The climate in Argentina is very varied; Buenos Aires and Cordoba have a temperate climate, meaning it can be pretty cold in winter but hot and humid in summer. Its winter runs from June to August, spring from September to November, summer from December to February and autumn from March to May. Averagely the coldest month is July, the wettest December and the windiest October.

How Physically Demanding Is It?

The shooting destinations in Argentina are a relatively low key affair regarding walking and carrying equipment. However, be prepared for a frantic days sport and to shoot an incredible amount of shells through your gun. A typical day can be very punishing on the shoulder, and we recommend a decent shoulder pad and shooting vest to help combat this.

How To Get There

You depart the UK and fly direct to Buenos Aires, where on arrival, you transfer to the domestic terminal for your connecting flight to Cordoba or the destination you’re visiting. Once there, you will be greeted and transferred to your lodge by a Sportquest representative.
