The great thing with sea fishing in Flateyri is that you have direct open ocean fishing and wind-protected fjords in case the weather is against you. Iceland’s waters are famous for their fish stocks, including the Cod stock, Iceland’s most important species. Many different species get caught when fishing in Iceland; however, the most common that attracts sea anglers from all over Europe are the enormous Cod and Halibut. The village of Flateyri is self-contained with shops and other local facilities just a short distance from the cabins, ultimately leaving you more fishing time.
Halibut fishing in Iceland is excellent. We have many different species to target on these fantastically fish-filled waters. Are you after the big Cod that swim these waters? Or is it the hard fighting Coalfish that are attracting you here? Whatever your chosen species is, you will not be disappointed with your weeks fishing. The onsite guides will help you make the right decisions on where to and how to fish these waters.
Of course, the chance to maybe hook a big Halibut is also there. These fish do swim in these waters and are renowned big hitters and super hard fighters. Other species that you can catch in Iceland include big Plaice and Dabs, and even Wolfish. The majority of your fishing here will be using shads and jigs that are worked vertically beside the boat. That style of fishing will account for nearly all species, including Cod and Halibut.
You can also try fishing with bait if you wish when Halibut fishing in Iceland. When using fish or worm baits drifted just off the bottom, you stand the chance of hooking into some quality fish like Plaice and Halibut. Boat fishing in Iceland is all self-drive, so the methods of fishing are down to the individuals. Lowering either a Chrome Pirk or small shad to the bottom and with an up and down movement to excite the Cod will generally see you catching the Cod. The same method is very productive for the Coalfish, but instead of leaving the shad/pirk near the bottom, we advise you to hit bottom then wind back to the surface, and the Coalfish usually will take on the retrieve.
Halibut fishing in Iceland, as mentioned before, is a waiting game, and you can go a few hours without contacting anything, then all of a sudden, you will be in for a fight of your life. The primary most productive method is to fish with a dead Coalfish on a Halibut float rigged with an Anti Twist rig lowered to the bottom, wind up a few metres, keep it around 2 metres from the bottom, and let the boat drift. The sea fishing in Flateyri offers a wide variety of species. March and April are the perfect months for the Skrei Cod, and April to September are ideal for Coalfish and Halibut and many other species.
Our boats are Icelandic made Seigla boats. These boats are tailor-made for sea fishing on the open ocean around Iceland. The boats are 7.80 meters long and 2.85 meters wide with 130 horsepower turbo diesel engine (inboard engine). Onboard, we provide all the equipment you need: GPS plotter, Eco-load, Radio to coast-guard, GPS security signal, life vest, lifeboat, extra tank for fuel, and rod rests.
As a rough guide, the main Cod fishing grounds are anything from 30 mins to an hours drive from the harbour. When Halibut fishing in Iceland the Halibut grounds are as close as 5 minutes from the pier. However, there are many different areas around Flateyri for you to try. All the fishing marks are pre-programmed into your boat chart plotter, and a little tip before you travel is to do your homework and search the area you are fishing; this will give you an advantage before you get there.
There are guides available at this camp. When booking your holiday, please let a member of the Sportquest team know if you require a guide. They charge daily and will come fishing on your boat. Their knowledge is invaluable, and we highly recommend booking at least one day with them. You will always have staff members onshore at this destination with whom you can ask questions if you so wish. The guides speak perfect English and will still help you with any problems that may arise.
When you arrive at your destination, the guides will put you through a small, rapid test to ensure you can drive the boat. The test will include a little piece of manoeuvring around, parking the boat and understanding how to use the radio. After this, you will be free to fish. Flateyri is an excellent destination for all, as the accommodation is top class. The fishing boats picked to ensure everyone has the North of Iceland’s best experience. As mentioned previously, this destination suits all abilities as you have nice weather, protected fjords and the option of fishing the open ocean. The destination is suitable for all abilities.
The destination of Flateyri is one that many sea anglers will have heard of; this Icelandic fishing destination is home to some massive fish. Of course, when staying here, you will need to rest your head, and the Flateyri cabins are the best place to do this.
At Flateyri, we have nine cabins with spectacular views of the harbour, suitable for five people. Each house has two twin-bedded rooms and one single bed bedroom. All cabins feature kitchens, lounge and private bathrooms.
The kitchens feature everything you need to prepare a meal, including a coffee maker. All of our cabins are within 300 meters of the boats.
Although these are self-catering cabins in the village of Flateyri, you will find everything you need, grocery and fishing tackle shops. There is a small shop in the town, a swimming pool, a pub/restaurant, and a harbour with a gas station to fuel your boat.
Please note that each cabin comes with one boat; therefore, should you wish to fish two people per boat, only two people will share a house.
The Flateyri cabins are self-catering, meaning that you will be catering for yourselves when on this holiday. The kitchens in the Flaeyri houses come complete with all the pots and pans you will need to create your dinners.
We would strongly advise you to book an extra bag when booking this tour and take a coolbox with you. The coolbox is then filled with food to take out with you; we would advise doing this as Icelandic prices are very high compared to UK prices.
When out in Iceland, we would advise buying fresh produce such as eggs, bread and milk but take such items as meat, pasta and rice in the coolbox.
Of course, there are shops nearby in Flateyri if you wished to visit them and a fantastic pub/restaurant.
When staying at Flateyri, you will be near the harbour, but the local village has a swimming pool. The local area is also fantastic for a spot of hiking where you can take in the phenomenal views surrounding Flateyri.
Although the fishing days are fixed, the below itinerary is still flexible should you require additional free days to explore at the beginning or end of your holiday; we can tailor this itinerary to suit you personally. After you have cleared customs, an Iceland Pro representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Hafnarfjordur which is 20 minutes from Reykjavík. You will then get to spend the night in this busy part of town. There are lots of different restaurants nearby all offer different styles of cuisine.
Overnight Accommodation: Hotel Viking (Twin rooms) B/B
After breakfast at the hotel, at a prearranged time, you will be transferred to the domestic airport for your flight to the Westfjords, approximately 45 min.

Arrive Isafjordur
On arrival in Isafjordur, you will be transferred to Flateyri where our fishing guide will greet you. Alternatively, we will provide you with a hire car so you can drive yourself Note: Our fishing guides and service staff are available during your whole stay.
Overnight Accommodation: Flateyri Cabins (Twin room) S/C
Over the next 6 days, as you have your own boat, there is no time limit to how much or how little you wish to fish and even at certain times of the year, it remains daylight for 24hrs. There are many different fjords to fish and of course the open ocean which is normally where the bigger fish are found. The fishing around Iceland is varied and some of the marks for Halibut are located very close to the camp and, if you fancy some Cod fishing, then simply go further out. All the marks are pre-programmed into your chart plotters.
Overnight Accommodation: Flateyri Cabins (Twin room) S/C
In the morning you will be transferred back to the airport, ready for your departure flight back to Reykjavík. Alternatively, if you have chosen the hire car then make your way back to the airport to drop off your hire car.

On arrival in Reykjavík, a member of Iceland Pro will meet you and take you back to the hotel in Hafnarfjordur.

Hi Paul thanks for helping us organise this. Iceland was very different from Norway and may just keep with Norway on the future. The hassle of getting there was much longer than Norway. Personally I didn't think the fishing was as good but maybe that may of been us. Thanks again and we are all looking forward to getting back to Norway next year

Hi Paul, the group and i found this to be very hard as there is no one to help or give guidance on fishing marks. The little briefing at the start of the holiday was good and showed us some marks on the chart plotter but we tried these and no good
We did catch a few big Cod and lost what we think may of been a Halibut. The accommodation was very good and you got amazing views everything was great apart from struggled with the fishing
Perhaps not the best place to go for your first sea fishing holiday, but we live and learn
Hi Freddie and rest of the group. i am so sorry you struggled to find the fish, it is a very daunting place when you first arrive. all that open ocean and not enough time….. Perhaps we can look at seeing if there is a local guide that we can hire to help and assist future customers?

Hi Sportquest, just wanted to say thank you for organising this trip for myself and our group. We had a great time caught lots of big Cod. We lost 2 days due to bad weather but thats how it goes sometimes.
The cabins are very nice and also the hosts, they made us feel very welcome. It would of been nice to be able to go straight to the cabins rather than staying in the hotel at the start but i guess this is to do with the flights etc
We have all agreed to go to Norway next year so you will be hearing from me soon

We returned from Iceland yesterday, having enjoyed a truly excellent six days of fishing in Flateyri.
The best cod was a 40-pounder - part of an incredible 600-kg catch taken 20 miles out to sea.
Matti, the guide, accompanied us on that trip, but the rest of the time we piloted the boat - which was first-class - ourselves, catching loads of cod, haddock, wolf-fish and coalfish.
I can't praise Matti too highly. He's only 26, but a true professional, who made sure that we had everything and all the information that we needed to fish effectively.
We were fortunate with conditions, and also the local topography. The flat seabed means that gear losses were minimal - just as well when you are using big Cutbait Herring.
The accommodation was also perfect. We each had a room, the cabin was warm and comfortable and the cooking facilities were very good.
The logistics of the whole holiday were also very good, though I have one suggestion: it would be easier if the courier greeting UK fishermen were to hold up a card with Sportquest on it. We had a few minutes' panic when we thought that no one was there to meet us at Keflavik.
However, I'll assign the whole experience five stars out of five. Well done, and many thanks for organising everything so well.

Hello Mel, thank you so much for helping is organise this trip. With me not being a fisher person I soon had made my own itinerary visiting some lovely places around Iceland and can highly recommend this part of the world to any non angler. The guys on the other hand knew what they wanted to do and that was to fish as much as they could (Was no problem for me, it was nice to have them out of my hair) each day they came back with fresh fish to cook. They have also passed on their thanks and will forward you a collection of pictures from our trip over the next couple of days.

The weather was really bad we only got out twice. I know you cant control the weather but please try next time. When we did get out the fishing was hard as we couldn't keep the boat still enough to drift. Apart from that all great thanks
