Where is the lodge?
Alphonse Resort sits on Alphonse Island which is located 400km (250miles) south-west of Mahe. It is only 7º south of the equator and only 1-hour flight from the capital Mahe.
Where do they fish?
The fishing is mainly concentrated around St Francois which is one of the islands that makes up Alphonse. This island is only a 40 to 45 minute boat ride each morning to some of the most amazing hard bottom sand flats on this earth. The uniqueness that sets St Francois apart from many other saltwater destinations is the ability to wade over 10,000 acres of hard white sand flats in search of the various species on offer.
How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?
Each morning the anglers board the transfer boat for the short 40 to 45-minute crossing over to St Francois which is inhabited island. On arrival anglers and their guides will depart to various flats, coral fingers and channels by professional skiffs. The travel time to the fishing from arrival will then be anything from 5 to 15 minutes.
What fish will I catch?
With now over 60 different species targeted on the fly, you will not go short of fish or species to target. The large expanse of saltwater flats are home to numerous Bonefish but in addition to this, the lagoon envelopes coral finger flats and coral heads allowing customers to catch three species of Triggerfish, seven species of Trevally, Milkfish, Barracuda, Sailfish, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and a plethora of other flats and offshore species.
How many fish will I catch?
The number of fish you can catch will depend on several factors. One is how high you set the stakes. For example, if you are looking to fish for all species on a given day you can expect some good days with 10 to 20 Bonefish per day. However, if you wish to target species like GT’S or Permit the number of fish you catch will be reduced.
How do they fish?
The fly fishing is mainly done wading the hard bottom flats, walking away from the skiffs with our guide in search of feeding fish. When targeting other species you will either wade or fish from the skiff closer to the coral fingers around the lagoon.
There is also the offshore fishing with either conventional tackle or fly fishing. You will practice switch and tease method where the guides tease target species to the surface and then you cast your fly into the action as the teasers are removed. With conventional tackle customer will troll lures behind the boat or cast surface lures around the boat.
Do the guides speak English?
All our guides speak very good English.
