Small Group Reap The Rewards Sea Trout Fishing and we only had at Kau Tapen we welcomed a small group of 4 rods, 3 of them that have been coming to the lodge for 21 years! They know the Rio Grande very well and enjoy every moment spent at Kau Tapen lodge.
We started the week with very high, fast, and dirty water due to the heavy rain we had had for a couple of days before.
Instead of staying at the lodge, reading a book or sending mail, etc… our guests were willing to give it a try and we went our every single session to see if something was possible. We arranged special sessions, going out earlier to fish when the sun was shinning on the water, to help improve the visibility which we usually try to avoid!
To be honest the situation was very tough, almost unfishable but still we went out and tried very hard and it paid off!
I really want to thanks our guest for their patience and for persevering so much. They could have given up, but instead they were trying harder and harder every day as the water was clearing up and dropping as well.
Even in these tough condition we caught fish every day, not many but enough to give us hope and confidence. We were all looking forward to have the water clear and drop to have excellent fishing as this high water combine with the full moon few days before were the perfect condition to bring a lot of nice fresh fish from the sea.
On Tuesday the river cleared up and dropped further and we caught 7 fish, and then on Wednesday 9 more. All very fresh and powerful bars of silver, fighting hard and providing our guests great sport.
We ended the week with 21 fish on the last day and Nicole S. caught a huge 25 pounder fresh cock fish just arrived form the sea, as well as a very nice 24 pounder for Randolf H. The two biggest fish of the season so far.
This is a lesson of fisherman’s life. Never give up and keep positive attitude and put your fly on the water if you want something to happen!
As always our staff worked very hard to keep our guests happy despite the tough fishing condition. A special thanks to our guests that have been incredibly patient and in a good mood during the whole week even if the fishing was tough.
We are looking forward to seeing them back next year.
