The Indian Ocean is the planet’s third largest ocean, reaching as far west as Africa and as far east as Australia. This vast expanse of salt water can provide some of the best saltwater fishing known to man.
One of the most sought-after species residing within these waters is the lightning fast and ultra-aggressive hitting Giant Trevally. Anglers travelling to fish in destinations like the Seychelles have the chance to battle with some very large specimens and every year monster GT’s are caught here.
Another favourite target when fishing in the Indian Ocean is the Bonefish. This fish is renowned for being a stealthy ninja. One minute you will see a shadow and in a split second, it is gone. These fish are called the ghost of the flats for this very reason. Along with Bonefish and GT’s you can also expect to come face to face with other species like Permit and Milkfish.
It is not only the fly fishing in the Indian Ocean that draws anglers from all over the globe, the saltwater lure and popper fishing is very special here too. Destinations such as the Andaman Islands and Madagascar provide outstanding saltwater lure and popper fishing with species such as Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally, Sailfish and Marlin being caught around these areas.
With some of the oceans most sought-after fish species, it is no surprise that the Indian Ocean is the destination on many anglers must fish list. The Indian ocean is one of nature’s most plush oceans and any angler travelling to fish in the Indian Ocean is in for a fishing experience that will never be forgotten.
