Kalum River Lodge | Canada | Questions & Answers
Fishing at Kalum River Lodge in Canada gives you access to three amazing rivers. First, there’s the mighty Skeena River which is famous for all 5 species of Pacific Salmon along with good runs each year of Steelhead.
You will also fish the Kitimat River which is a drift only river so no motorboats allowed. This makes for idyllic river fishing for all species of Pacific Salmon but the Kitimat is well known for its hard fight and huge Chum Salmon.
The third river is the Kalum River which is known around the world for its world record Chinook/King Salmon. Although the actual current world record comes from the Skeena, this was a Kalum River fish as the Kalum is a tributary of the Skeena. Each year hundreds of King salmon run the Kalum to spawn in the upper reaches of the Skeena River. Fishing the Kalum is always full of excitement as with each take you never know what to expect. If you are looking for good all-round Pacific Salmon and Steelhead fishing Kalum River Lodge has everything you need.
Where is the lodge?
The Kalum River Lodge is on the banks of the Kalum River, this Lodge is also the owner’s accommodation. However, to meet the demand we needed purpose-built accommodation for the growing need of anglers. Because of this, we built new accommodation and called it Wild River Lodge. This accommodation is located right on the banks of the Skeena River and boasts stunning views of the world renowned river and the surrounding mountains.
Where do they fish?
You have access to three main rivers providing a huge watershed of fishable water. The lodge has access and licences to fish all the major areas. You will also have access to fish designated waters if you require which can be discussed and arranged while at the lodge. The three main rivers are Skeena, Kitimat and Kalum.
How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?
How long depends on which river you are fishing and which zone you are fishing. In contrast, the fishing can be as short as 15 mins away up to over 1 hour away.
What fish will I catch?
One advantage of this trip is that you have access to the whole 5 species of pacific Salmon. There’s Chinooks (also known as King Salmon), Chum Salmon and Coho Salmon (also known as Silver Salmon). You also have Sockeye and Pink Salmon that run in their millions upon millions. On top of this, there are the mighty Steelhead.
How many fish will I catch?
This depends on which Salmon you fish for and at which time of year. If you are there when the peak Sockeye, Pinks or Silvers are running it is not hard to catch 4o plus fish per day. However, on average we like to say to customers expect around 5 to 10 fish per person per day.
How do they fish?
This depends on which river you are fishing and what time of year. All these rivers are best fished with double handed rods and Spey lines. In some parts, it is also important to have heavy sinking tips as the fish run tight to the bottom so that is where you need to be fishing. To fish for the bigger Salmon and Steelhead you will need longer casts, heavy lines and large weighted flies.
Do the guides speak English?
All the guides speak both English and French fluently.
Who is best suited to this destination?
It is a perfect destination for anglers who want to get some action and fish in stunning scenery. Many frustrate Atlantic Salmon anglers have travelled with us after many years of no action on Scottish rivers. Just after 1 day, they could not believe the difference in catching fish here compared to the Scottish rivers.
What skill level is required?
This destination is suited to all levels. We have sent many customers on their very first Salmon trip fishing with Spey rods and after some basic tuition, they have caught fish. However, this destination has many world record sized fish so even the hardest of anglers still gets excited each time they cast a fly into these waters.
How physically demanding is this trip?
The rivers are accessed by boat so there is limited wading. However, the rivers have pebbles shores which when only lightly covered with water do become very slippery. It is therefore only really best suited to able bodied anglers. Having said that, we do have seats available so we can take you right down to the water’s edge which means you can even fish from a sitting position.
When to go?
The time of year to visit is dependent on what your target is. this is because the 5 species of Salmon all run slightly different times. There is a vast coverage and on certain weeks the Salmon even overlap which makes it possible to catch all species in the same week. For the best advice contact our offices and we can talk you through the best options according to what you would like to achieve.
How to get there?
It is an easy place to get to and with some great flights. First you fly to Vancouver and from there a short flight to Terrace. Once at Terrace it’s only a 30 min ride to the lodge.
What is the accommodation like?
Our new accommodation is called Wild River Lodge. One great advantage of building a new lodge is that we can now offer single rooms with private en-suites. This has proven to be a huge success with customers as there’s nothing like your own private room after a long day on the river. The lodge also has a been built with anglers socialising in mind with a large open plan living/dining area that becomes the focal point each day for customers to relax and unwind after a great days fishing.
What is the food like?
Another real winner at this lodge is the food. Deanna, one of the owners, is an amazing cook and each day you will return to warm, freshly cooked meals that can compete with top restaurants. It is worth noting that all meals are provided and taken in the lodge grand dining room.
