Mission Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Aleknagik in the heart of the world famous Bristol Bay region. This area offers unsurpassed trophy fishing for Salmon and Trout in a spectacular wilderness setting. This lodge is easily considered to be Alaska’s finest fly-out lodge operations.

At Mission Lodge you are never fixed to a set itinerary. Each night the head guide will sit down with you to discuss what you wish to fish for and how. They will then explain all the different options and with over 40 boats stashed within fly distance you will not be short of places to fish. Another advantage of staying at Mission Lodge when fishing in Alaska is that they take care of everything for you.

Where is the Lodge?

Mission Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Aleknagik in the heart of the world famous Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska. This area offers unsurpassed trophy fishing for Salmon and Trout in a spectacular wilderness setting.

Where will I fish?

As part of our packages, we fly you out to different destinations each day. Our fleet of three DeHavilland Beavers are maintained to the highest standards possible and our pilots are all veteran Alaskan bush pilots who will get you safely from point “A” to point “B” in these gentle birds. We have over 40 boats placed all over the region just waiting for you each day. We are fortunate to have a number of locations available for you to fish that include private leases, tribal lands, State and National Parks and Refuges. We currently have permits to fish in the following State and Federal parks, Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Katmai National Park & Preserve, Wood-Tikchik State Park,

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

Your destination travel time will be anywhere for 10 minutes to 1 and a half hours. Much of this depends on winds and weather. In a normal week, you will generally only travel on average 20-40 minutes a day by plane. Some of our destinations are close and only a 10-40 minute boat ride from the lodge.

What fish will I catch?

Depending on what time of year you join us will depend on what species will be available in the rivers, please make sure you check out the species information on this tour. Throughout the year King Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Sockeye and Silver Salmon are all on the main menu. Other species include Northern Pike, Chum Salmon, Dolly Varden and Grayling.

How many fish will I catch?

The amount of fish you will catch will depend on the target species.

  • Kings – 5-10 hookups per day on the fly is considered good.
  • Rainbow trout – a dozen quality fish would be expected.
  • Peak Silver fishing should provide 30-50+ hookups per day.

How do they fish?

Fishing is done either by foot or from the boat, normally you will use a boat to access lots of different areas up and down the different rivers you will be fishing. Once there you will fish from the bank, however, if there runs are a little too deep to wade and fish your guide will control the boat so you can fish effectively as you drift through the runs. You can use different styles of fly fishing from swinging large flies for Kings and Chum Salmon, through to small dry flies for Trout & Grayling

Do the guides speak English?

All the guides speak very good English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This is a great destination for any fly anglers wanting to target and catch King Salmon along with Coho Salmon Trout anglers would also enjoy this destination.

What skill level is required?

As there are so many choices of rivers, locations and different species to fish this destination is suitable for all levels. Even if this is the first time you have picked up a fly rod, our guides will take very good care of you.

How physically demanding is this trip?

The physical demands are not challenging. You should expect to get in and out of boats on most days with some easy wading and short hikes.

When is the best time to go?

Fishing at Mission Lodge is done between June to September. When to go depends on the species you wish to catch. Contact our office and our staff will advise you on the best times.

How will I get there?

Firstly, you will arrive in Anchorage. After an overnight stay in Anchorage, it’s a short flight to Dillingham, from Dillingham airport to the Lake Aleknagik takes 40 minutes by road. From Lake Aleknagik to Mission Lodge 5 minutes by large covered boats.

What is the accommodation like?

Mission Lodge has been around since 1984. Their attention to detail has set the standard that others throughout Alaska try to attain. The lodge offers wireless internet access as well as a guest computer station. There is also a billiards room, a fully stocked bar area (with all drinks included) and a full fly shop. On top of this, there is a sauna, hot tub and full spa facilities.

It is important to mention that all rooms at Mission Lodge are single or couple occupancy. There is no single supplement charge for a single room. Community bathrooms and showers are located on each floor. Private suites with private bathrooms can be arranged for couples or individuals if requested in advance.

What is the food like?

Meals at Mission Lodge are prepared by world-class kitchen staff. The dinner menu may include entrees such as you would find in the finest restaurants in top restaurants. Lunches will be pre-packed or, if you really want a true Alaskan experience, can include a shore lunch of freshly cooked fish. Dinner entrees include everything from fresh seafood to thick, juicy steaks.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

Mission Lodge provides all fishing tackle and waders, however, if you prefer to use your own tackle you are more than welcome to bring it along, safe in the knowledge that if you forget anything we have you covered.

Is internet and phone signal available?

There is internet available at the lodge. However, it is limited to emails and texts. No downloading or uploading of photo’s, videos or VOIP communications. The lodge does have a phone for emergencies. Note there is no mobile phone coverage. 

Are there other activities available?

There is much more to see and do in Alaska than just fishing, so if you like to take in a bit more adventure we can offer you at Mission Lodge either, flightseeing tours, bear viewing trips, hiking and cultural tours.
