Montaraz Pigeon Shooting Report – May 2012
Montaraz pigeon hunting started on May 1, with several improvements at lodge headquarters. New manager Cristian Reartas and his wife Elisa have raised the quality of this unique Argentine estancia, with a ramped up a la carte menu, remodeled living quarters, garden, swimming pool bar, and a stocked wine seller. Non-shooters have enjoyed visits to the Sister Theresa Foundation, horseback riding on Peruvian walking horses, golf, and time spent in our shop.
Hunting has also been excellent. If the birds didn’t fly in the morning they did in the afternoon. Hunting days begin at 7:30 a.m. in the fields, where two shooters and one assistant occupy each blind. Field assistants provide shells, mark and count birds, and serve refreshments. Decoys are situated before shooters arrive. Depending on what field we’re hunting, we use a selection of robot pigeons, carousels, and steady plastic pigeons. When the shooting slows down, guides and field assistants set new decoys with dead pigeons. This is a proven magnet for any pigeon that flies near the blinds.
For those who’ve never hunted over decoyed pigeons, the experience is similar to ducks but in milder, drier weather. The gauge of preference is a 20, with size 7 shot. Your longest shot will be about 45 yards. Limits are highly attainable, especially when you bring you’re A-game to the field. Depending on preference, lunch is served in the field or back at the lodge for tasty barbecues in our “open asador.”
The warm weather we’ve experienced as of late has diminished the potential of our local alfalfa fields. Instead we’ve been concentrating on productive feedlots and sorghum fields. This should change soon with the first cold-front.
