Escorted Isle Of Youth Report and this kind of report makes our job all the more enjoyable. We would like to thank Ron for his great report and some fantastic pictures. We would love to have you back again next year so you can do battle with some more of those huge Tarpon
Last year I was lucky enough to join Jack Simpson’s crew (also known as The Pirates of the Caribbean!) on a fishing trip to Cuba. I had been to Cuba before as a first time novice the previous year to Playa Larga and caught my share of ‘Bones’. This first time was to be very different, we were after ‘Big Tarpon’ and I did not let the side down.
On my first day, with Jack’s help I landed the biggest fish of the trip. The memory of it will stay in my mind forever having been a trout and salmon man all my life. The ‘gang’ were magnificent despite the fact that this ‘virgin fisherman’ was a Sasenac, held together with bits of old iron, bent and twisted by the ravages of time and so modest as to be incapable of ‘lording it’ over those other ‘mere mortals’! So, this year I had to go back. Just to prove it was skill and not just sheer luck! Believe it or not, I DID IT AGAIN (I’m reliably informed by the Guides that both fish were close to the 100lb mark!) this second one nearly caused me to give up and hand my rod over to Jack after about half an hour. But I held on, after all, he’s had his share.
I subsequently caught more varieties of fish including Snook, Bones, Snapper and Barracuda. In addition I was the only one to catch the elusive Banana Fish! (Look it up on Google).
The whole trip will remain in my memory forever, especially the ‘Crew’. The thrill of getting onto that boat and slamming across the open water with the huge engine howling behind us, bouncing over and through the waves was a ‘schoolboy’s dream. How those guides recognise the surroundings I do not know, but they invariably put us ‘on the fish’!
I hope I’ll be able to go back, or at least meet those great guys again, if only to remind then WHO’S THE DADDY!!!!!
