Kau Tapen Fishing Report January to February and we’ve enjoyed another good week at Kau Tapen marked by tough, windy conditions at times. But once again our guests prevailed! Thanks to the guide team for their hard work.
Week 5 was another one to remember with returning guests from the U.K., including Ian Bob, Alistair, Roddy, Reuben, and David-all good sticks. Margaret has been to KT several times, as well as Marcelo M. We also had two North American first timers who enjoyed a friendly atmosphere both at the lodge and on the river! Thanks to all of you.
Water levels continued to slowly drop, which has been good for fishing. However, instable weather has delivered a mix of cold days, windy days, and a few nice warm days. Fishing, similarly, was up and down with good overall numbers and some large fish to hand. Roddy scored the biggest fish of the week. Well done!
Adapting to ever-changing conditions, we fished it all: from floating lines with intermediate tips to superfast sinking-tips. Flies included rubber-leg nymphs, small leeches, and the Sunray Shadow, a great searching pattern that continues to catch and move fish. During the last hour, guests found success with silver-and-black leeches, as well as purple-and-black and all-black variations.
At this point in the season, sea-runs are scattered throughout the river in both the upper and lower sections. Some are holding in pools, while others are migrating upstream in search of prime spawning grounds. In addition to fishing, the aesthetic continues to delight: beautiful sunsets, industrious beavers conducting their daily business, and condors surfing with the wind.
Matthew visited lodge guests for a fly-tying demonstration, highlighting techniques for his signature (and deadly) “Green Solon” fly. We ended the week with Tapas Night, followed by great laughs and partying well into the evening. We also celebrated Matthew’s 26th birthday and bid a brief farewell to our guide Santi, who we expect back next season.
And so it goes. The 2013 at Kau Tapen is shaping up nicely and we look forward to having you join us soon.
