Species Spotlight: Sea Trout

Species Spotlight: Sea Trout

Species: Sea Trout

Also known as: Sewin, Peel, White trout

Latin Name: Salmo Trutta

Description

Sea Trout are a silvery colour with faint black spots. However, once they return to freshwater they quickly take on the normal colouration of the resident brown trout in preparation for spawning. They return to their silvery stage as they migrate back to the saltwater. Adult Sea Trout are between 18 to 56 centimetres 7.1 to 22.0 in long and can weigh from 20 to 53 lb. Breeding males will develop a hook-like, upward-facing protrusion on the lower jaw called a kype.

Average size

Typically, they reach sizes in excess of 50lbs in weight but the average you will catch is about 8lb in weight.

Where to catch

Sea Trout can be caught in many saltwater estuaries around the world as they make their migration to and from Saltwater. One of the top destinations to target the Sea Trout in Argentina are such places as Las Buitreras, Kau Tapen and El Rincon. Along with Argentina, other amazing places to target this particular fish are Norway and even some rivers in the UK give you a great chance of catching a Sea Trout although the much bigger fish can be found abroad.

Fishing Methods

They’re normally targeted by using fly fishing methods. Casting different types of flys to rising fish is an extremely productive method with dry and sinking flys all accounting for many catches. Bait fishing can also be used such as worms or maggots trotted down fast-flowing streams under a float often catching fish. Spinning with lures, including mepps spinners, is another great tactic to ensnare a stunning fish.
