Scientific name: Thymallus thymallus

Description: The Grayling is a fish that is found in many fast-flowing waters, being grey in colour the males and females are easily distinguishable due to the fantastic dorsal fin the male fish exhibits. The Grayling grows to a maximum recorded length of 60cm and a maximum recorded weight of 6.7 kg (15 lb). This species is one of natures most elegant fish, this fast sleek fish is one that is sought after by many anglers. Inhabiting many of the freshwater rivers around Europe the lady of the stream can provide anglers with some fantastic sport on light tackle. The handsome males of this species are targeted due to their stunning sail-like dorsal fin the when erect makes for fantastic photographs.

Average size: The average size that you will catch is around 4lb with the maximum recorded weight being a collossal 15lb’s.

Where to catch: Grayling can be found in many European rivers where anglers fishing for Trout and Salmon often hook into Grayling as well. Many glacial rivers in Iceland and the Salmon rivers of Norway hold these beautiful fish. In the UK you will find Grayling in the trout streams of Hampshire and the famous Salmon rivers of Scotland.

Fishing methods: This species is predominantly targeted by anglers using fly fishing tactics. Small flies are cast into the area that is expected to be holding produce many fish, these include dry flies and sinking patterns. Other methods used include trotting worms and maggots under a stick float and spinning using small lures like a Mepps spinner.
