Alphonse Island | Fly Fishing Seychelles

Overview

Tour code: SEY004

The Seychelles has become the mecca for saltwater fly anglers but one location stands out above the rest, the Alphonse group. The Alphonse group is considered one of the most desirable saltwater destinations in the world. It is a paradise for fly fishing anglers due to its pristine waters and exceptional variety of saltwater species.

Location
Situated approximately 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa and 310 nautical miles southwest of Mahe, Alphonse is a tiny, triangular coral island that it is one of three formations in a small and isolated group: Alphonse in the north, Bijoutier in the middle, and St. François in the south.

Fishing
Each day you will depart from Alphonse in Tam Tam, a comfortable and fast mothership, which will take you on a 40 minute journey to the uninhabited atoll of St Francois. The majority of the fishing will involve wading the firm white sandy flats which are interlaced with channels leading to the perimeter reef which it is considered by many to be the world’s most exquisite and diverse saltwater fishery.  This diverse fishery enables you to catch several of the now 60 species targeted on fly. Including three species of Triggerfish, seven species of Trevally, Milkfish, Barracuda, Sailfish, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and a plethora of other flats and offshore species.

One other advantage of our operation on Alphonse is that we also have available offshore fishing for either conventional tackle or fly fishing. These options allow you to upgrade any of your fishing days to an offshore day that provides anglers with the additional opportunity to catch exciting species such as Sailfish, Wahoo, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado.

Guiding
On our Alphonse Island fishing trip, you will enjoy 8 hours of fishing each day, based on 2 anglers per one guide. Guiding takes place on a rotational basis, allowing anglers to experience all facets of the fishery and to fish with a different guide each day.

Other activities
This Alphonse Island fishing, with its stunning island and resort, is perfect for non-anglers too. There are a variety of activities to participate in including cycle tours, Bijoutier Island visit, dolphin viewing, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling, spa and many more.

If you have any questions on the Alphonse Island fishing trips we offer then contact us in the office, our experienced team will be happy to help you with any queries you have. Additionally, you can request a free brochure.

You can also view our other Seychelles destinations.

Questions & Answers

Make an enquiry Contact Us

Where is the lodge?

Alphonse Resort sits on Alphonse Island which is located 400km (250miles) south-west of Mahe. It is only 7º south of the equator and only 1-hour flight from the capital Mahe.

Where will I fish?

The fishing is mainly concentrated around St Francois which is one of the islands that makes up Alphonse. This island is only a 40 to 45-minute boat ride each morning to some of the most amazing hard bottom sand flats on this earth. The uniqueness that sets St Francois apart from many other saltwater destinations is the ability to wade over 10,000 acres of hard white sand flats in search of the various species on offer.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

Each morning the anglers board the transfer boat for the short 40 to 45-minute crossing over to St Francois which is inhabited island. On arrival anglers and their guides will depart to various flats, coral fingers and channels by professional skiffs. The travel time to the fishing from arrival will then be anything from 5 to 15 minutes.

What fish will I catch?

With now over 60 different species targeted on the fly, you will not go short of fish or species to target. The large expanse of saltwater flats are home to numerous Bonefish but in addition to this, the lagoon envelopes coral finger flats and coral heads allowing customers to catch three species of Triggerfish, seven species of Trevally, Milkfish, Barracuda, Sailfish, Dogtooth Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna and a plethora of other flats and offshore species.

How many fish will I catch?

The number of fish you can catch will depend on several factors. One is how high you set the stakes. For example, if you are looking to fish for all species on a given day you can expect some good days with 10 to 20 Bones per day. However, if you wish to target species like GT’S or Permit the number of fish you catch will be reduced.

How will I fish?

The fly fishing is mainly done wading the hard bottom flats, walking away from the skiffs with our guide in search of feeding fish. When targeting other species you will either wade or fish from the skiff closer to the coral fingers around the lagoon.
There is also the offshore fishing with either conventional tackle or fly fishing. You will practice switch and tease method where the guides tease target species to the surface and then you cast your fly in to the action as the teasers are removed. With conventional tackle customer will troll lures behind the boat or cast surface lures around the boat.

Do the guides speak English?

All our guides speak very good English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

It is perfect for everyone. Whether you are looking for a diehard saltwater fly fishing trip with some of the best fishing in the world or you want a more relaxed approach, Alphonse Island and resort will have you all covered.

What skill level is required?

This destination is perfect for all levels of fly fishing. There is excellent Bonefish fishing for complete beginners to more experienced anglers looking to target the larger specimens. There is more challenging fly fishing for species such as GT’S and Milkfish if the anglers are more experienced casters. Having said this, all of our guides are great instructors and love nothing more than teaching customers to catch the first of a new species.

How physically demanding is this trip?

To get the best out of this destination you need to be of a suitable fitness standard and be able to walk certain distances each day (on easy hard bottom sand walks). If you wish to fish offshore with both conventual tackle or fly fishing there is limited walking involved as the fishing is mainly conducted from the boat.

When is the best time to go?

The main fishing season on Alphonse Island runs from early October to the end of May.

How will I get there?

From the UK, you will fly to either Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha. From there it is only a short 4.5-hour flight to Mahe. After an overnight stay in Mahe, the next day there is a 1-hour flight to Alphonse.

What is the accommodation like?

Alphonse resort is a single resort that offers two different types of accommodation. There are 22 privately spaced air-conditioned Beach Bungalows or five one-bedroom Beach Suites, offering every kind of comfort you could ever need. All accommodation has great ocean views providing the idyllic setting for that perfect getaway.

What is the food like?

The bar area, pool and lounge area provides the ideal venue to relax in the evening breeze, after a day out in the sun and houses the main restaurant. The food is all first class and suits all tastes. Each day there is also freshly caught fish of the highest quality.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

There are fly fishing outfits consisting of Thomas fly rods and Shilton reels, loaded with 300 yards of Cortland braided backing can be loaned at no charge. Fly lines will need to be purchased from the shop and it is recommended that you pre-order a fly pack for your expedition, which would include all the flies you would need for the various different species on offer. There is a full range of flies that are custom tied for Alphonse destinations on the right hooks and with the correct material. It’s important that angler’s pre-book the rod hire as well as tackle to ensure that we have sufficient stock. All tackle sales may be settled at the end of your trip upon check out at Alphonse Island. All rod breakages are for your account and will be billed at US$150 per rod.

Is internet and phone signal available?

There is no mobile signal/connectivity on the island. Each Bungalow and Suite has a phone service, operated via satellite. There is free wi-fi in the bar and lounge area.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.
