Boat Fishing for Catfish | River Ebro | Spain

Tour code: SPA002

This amazing destination located on the lower River Ebro is a world away from the normal bank fishing. Here we utilise modern boats to target these freshwater beasts and once you have caught your first Catfish from a boat, you will not go back. So far our customers have landed fish to 198LB with the average fish around 100lb. Yes, these are not as big as the Cats that get caught on the upper stretches but playing a fish of this size from a boat is so very different than standing on the bank.

If you are serious about your Catfishing and are ready for an action-packed fishing holiday, then look no further. We are pleased to bring you this great destination, which is located on the lower stretches of the Ebro River. You may be asking yourself why the lower stretches, there is one simple answer – it is far less pressure. This trip is fully guided at all times by a guide who will be driving your boat.

You will be fishing the lower reaches of the Ebro Delta close to the town of L’ampolla, the areas you will be fishing are renowned for there large Catfish and the best bit about these areas is that despite the great number of fish present they are far less pressured than areas that are normally fished by those from the banks.

This destination isn’t your normal overcrowded Ebro style of fishing, all the fishing is done by boat, which means you can reach those less pressured areas. You will get the feeling you are the only one fishing, which couldn’t be further away from your run of the mill Ebro trips, but still, be surrounded by stunning backdrops and awesome wildlife.

You will be fishing the Ebro River aboard our fully customised boats that have been modified for locating, hooking and landing very large Wels Catfish. These boats are very stable 17 foot California Skiffs fitted with 50hp Honda 4stroke outboard motors with electric start and tilt features. These engines provide first-rate performance and reliability and allow you great mobility during the course of the day. A typical day on the river will be around 8 hours.

The fishing at this destination is done by fishing with baits ledgered on or near the bottom these baits come in a wide variety but one of the more commonly used baits is chicken, the catfish will move around and hone in on your bait hopefully wolfing it down and then giving you a fight you will not forget. These fish can reach sizes well in excess of 150lb in weight so the correct tackle is needed and this is supplied free of charge once you arrive in Spain, this means that you will have no worries about any tackle you have being under-gunned for the fish you will be catching.

This trip is fully guided by an English speaking guide who will help you every step of the way to catch that fish you have always wanted to land. These guides will offer any advice you may need and will be driving the boat for you, taking you to the marks and areas they think will produce the fish on the day you are fishing.

Day 1:

Depart UK (alternative routes available)
Arrive Reus

Once you arrive, a representative from the Catfish company will be waiting to transfer you to your accommodation. This takes a little while but you will get a good sense of your surroundings. On arrival, you will be shown to your room where you will be free to unpack and relax before your first days fishing.

Overnight accommodation: Guest House (Single room) B/B

Days 2 to 4: Fishing Days

Each morning at a pre-arranged time you will be picked up and driven the short distance to your boat ready for your full days fishing with a Guide. All tackle is supplied and will be waiting on the boat each day for you free of charge. our guides will take you to areas that very rarely get fished to target Catfish by boat with trotted dead baits. You may throughout your day get to fish many different areas that all hold huge Catfish.

Overnight Accommodation: Guest House (Single room) B/B

Days 5 TO 7: Fishing Days

On your last three days, our guide will be on hand to help you in every way and will teach you from their vast knowledge of this river. There are a few different techniques to try and you can discuss this with your fishing guide each day. This part of the river is not fished very much so you may not even see another angler during your week, but that doesn’t mean that the fishing isn’t good. It’s not particularly easy to fish from the banks so the fishing pressure isn’t that high.

Overnight Accommodation: Guest House (Single room) B/B

Day 8:

In the morning you will be transferred back to the airport in time for your return flight

Questions & Answers

Where is the Lodge?

The Catfish fishing is based near the town of L’ampolla Spain, this accommodation is a short journey from the fishing grounds but also has all the amenities of the town close by. This means that if you need any provisions when on this holiday you will be able to go and get them from the local shops.

Where do they fish?

You will be fishing in the amazing River Ebro, this river is famed for its huge fish potential with Catfish to over 200lb and Carp to over 40lb. You will be fishing from the banks of this large river and your baits will be placed in the best positions to try and catch these fish.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The fishing boats are a short drive from the hotel your guides will drive you down to your boat and then you will head out on the river to your chosen spot. The guides are all local and know what places fish best at the right times so they will ensure you get the best possible fishing experience.

What fish will I catch?

Whilst fishing on the River Ebro you will predominantly be targeting the huge Catfish and Carp that live in these waters. There are also chances to catch other species too like Barbel, Ide and Zander.

How many fish will I catch?

When on the Ebro you are fishing for a specimen fish so there may be quiet times but these waters have the capability to produce some absolute monsters so that one run could be the fish of a lifetime. when fishing for the smaller species

How do they fish?

The fishing on the River Ebro for the catfish is done by float fishing dead baits near the bottom, Catfish are bottom feeders so this is the way to target these fish. Big baits will be used and these are dead fish baits as these are durable and the large size means they cannot be taken by smaller fish. Another favourite bait for the boat fishing on the Ebro is Chicken carcasses, these can be a very effective bait on their day.

Do the guides speak English?

The guesthouse manager and staff all speak perfect English and will always help you with any questions that may arise.

Who is best suited to this destination?

The river Ebro is a great destination for all, as the accommodation, restaurant/bar and of course the fishing has been set up to ensure everyone has the best experience of Spain. you will have a guide with you at all time s to ensure that your fishing experience is the best it can be.

As mentioned previously, this destination suits all abilities as you have nice weather, protected rivers and a guide who will help you with everything you need.

How physically demanding is this trip?

The destination is suitable for all abilities, the fish can put up a big fight as you would expect from something that can grow to over 200lb but your guide will be there to help you if you need help.

When to go?

This destination is fishable nearly all year with the prime months for the big Catfish being the warmer spring and summer months of May through to September.

How to get there?

You will fly from a UK airport (roughly 2 hours) to Reus where you will be picked up by a representative from guided Catfish. The transfer to the accommodation by car is then around 1 hour.

What is the accommodation like?

The Ebro fishing guest house is perfectly set up for the angler as well as an ideal place to rest and refresh after a hard day fishing on the Ebro. You will not have to walk far for your meals and is the best place in town to share your fishing stories. The Hotel Flamingo is a four-star hotel situated in the coastal town of L’Ampolla, a very vibrant and modern Spanish town. The hotel offers very comfortable and well-equipped rooms with excellent facilities and services. The hotel also benefits from an indoor and outdoor pool with plenty of sun loungers. The hotel restaurant offers breath-taking views over the Gulf of Sant Jordi and also the Ebro Delta.

What is the food like?

Well, where would you like to go? we have a massive brochure

I will give you call soon to help you put some thoughts together

I have been to spain many times for the cats and fancied something different. when i found this trip it looked exactly what i was after. I have spent many days lined up on the bank waiting for a bite so when i saw you could fish from a boat i wanted to go. The guide was very good and spent a lot of time helping us find fish. if there were no fish he would just move to a different spot. We all ended up with Cats over 100lb and will be back next year as i am hooked

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Lee, after going with us to our other Catfishing trip so many times i was glad when liked our new set up in Spain. The boat fishing option is the way i would go, so much fun

The guides do work very hard and we always get great comments on how professional they are

Thank you for your comments

Top marks to our guide who never failed to find us fish. It is such a different fight from a boat and a lot more enjoyable as you really feel part of your surroundings. The accommodation was great and the food to match. Many thanks

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thats ok Carl glad we could help and i am pleased you mentioned about playing the fish from the boat as i try to explain this to new people and its hard for them to understand.

I shall pass on your kind remarks to our guides over there

This part of the Ebro is so picturesque, it was like a completely different place compared to the other parts of the river i have fished. The cats were not as big but fishing from a boat made up for that, they just seemed to pull even harder.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

We often get comments on how stunning this area is and how it appears to be almost untouched. When we talked i did mention that the cats are on the smaller size in this area as it has not been filled in with pellets. But an average of around 80lb's is still a big Cat

Hope the trip lived up to your dreams

Being a coarse fisherman my PB was an 18lb Carp so with this trip booked, to say i was excited was an understatement. My new PB is now a 140lb Catfish and even managed a 28lb Carp. Fishing from the boat was hard going but the Guide moved the boat around to help me, i think it might have something to do with my age...... I will certainly consider going back next year

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Jack, when i first spoke to you and you mentioned your PB i smiled to myself as i knew you would be coming home with something a little bit bigger

I always make people aware that from the boat it is much harder to land these huge fish as you have not got any solid ground underneath. The guides are very good

We have some great weeks available for next year Jack so please do get in touch

Thanks Paul for sending us to this part of Spain as the fishing was so good, we all caught lots of Cats and will be contacting you soon for next year

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

You are more than welcome Tony. Hope you have some great memories and i know the guides would love to have you back

The set up was spot on from the transfers to the accommodation and the fishing was fantastic. The guide helped us to get amongst some huge Cats in stunning surroundings, very rarely saw another angler which is completely different to the norm.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Jack, we are pleased you liked this destination. It is quickly becoming the new way of catching those big Cats and don't they pull hard when you are on a boat.

Some of the pictures you gave us looked great and we will be than happy to help you for next year

Superb trip for two of us, thanks

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thanks John for all your holiday ratings, we aim to please and so glad you had a great trip. Its nice to cat catfish on bait. Regards Peter

We had a great 4 days fishing on the Ebro River this February - Al and Martin were fantastic guys and managed to get us 4 cats between us ( biggest 168 lbs ) despite some very challenging weather conditions. Nothing was a problem for them - thanks to them both and especially to Martin for getting us safely home on one very stormy day - Cheers guys !

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Ian, wow some amazing fish and in some cold weather, glad you liked the whole trip all our staff really do go that extra mile to ensure our customers enjoy themselves. Cheers Paul PS thanks for the 100% score

The guides were superb and the fishing fantastic...159lb, 153lb, 81lb, 80lb etc etc. The only thing I would have liked to be consulted on was the flights, it would be have been much more convenient to fly from Birmingham airport even at a greater cost. Stansted is a 3 hour drive and I had to pay for a weeks airport parking.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Ross, thanks for your comments and catch report, wow some amazing fishing you had, love the pictures. I am sorry about the flights I am no sure why there was never any mention about flights options from Birmingham, I will check this out with the staff as this would have given us a score of 100%. Hope to see you return back with us soon. Regards Mel

Fish were not very cooperative due to the weather, however I did catch every day and achieve my aim of a big cat over 100lb my biggest was 115lbs.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Michael, thanks for coming back to us, sorry to hear the weather slowed down the fishing, but great to hear that you caught catfish each and everyday. Plus congratulations on catching on your new personal best of 115lb. I look forward in managing your booking again. Regards Mel
