ALASKA WEST CAMP | SALMON FLY FISHING

Overview

Tour code: ALL031

Alaska West Lodge is considered to be one of the best valued Salmon Fly Fishing destinations in Alaska, but that doesn’t mean a compromise on the fishing, the accommodation or more importantly the service received. Alaska West is a tent lodge that operates a fixed, tented base located in the Togiak National Wildlife refuge approximately five miles upriver of the Alaskan native village of Quinhagak.

This exceptional fishing holiday offers anglers the chance to fish many different rivers using many different methods from single-handed fishing to Spey rod anglers. All the rivers you will fish will keep the most competent angler busy while offering new challenges each day, from willow-lined back streams to wide-open pools, this really does suit many people’s abilities.

Alaska West Fly Fishing

This location couldn’t be in a better position with it only being 5.5 miles from the mouth giving access to fresh run fish on a regular basis. Being on the banks of the world-famous Kanektok River you will have the chance to fish for all five species of Pacific Salmon and if that wasn’t enough you can also target at certain times of the season, Leopard Bows, Char and Grayling.

The river, locally known as the ’Fish Factory’ offers anglers a huge variety of fishing opportunities for a large population of species and it is hard to believe that such a small river can hold such large biomass of fish.

Further downstream the river widens and gives way to long gravel bars which are ideal homes for King Salmon as they lay in deep pockets regaining their strength either side of the bars. You will also find many snaggy channels which offer great protection for the large population of Rainbows. Making your way passed these fishing holding areas you will start to find slow backwaters which are teeming with Silver Salmon which a few hours before were in saltwater.

Location

If you were to travel upstream towards the mouth of the Kanektok River, passed Alaska West fishing Lodge, the river certainly gets a lot narrower and transitions to a smaller more intimate river with side channels and tributaries. These smaller areas are ideal for a little bit of hiking up side channels while stalking the Rainbows and in some of the smaller pools you will find a few Salmon. These smaller systems offers a great days fly fishing as you simply will be fishing for anything that takes your well-presented fly.

As you will see, the options for Alaska West and the Kanektok River system are endless and the opportunities you will be presented with each day will keep the most skilled angler busy for many years to come. You can learn more about Salmon Fly Fishing at Alaska West over on our YouTube Channel.

Fishing

The season is short, just 12 weeks of fishing, but things change very quickly during this period. From mid-June to mid-July, King Salmon is the most popular target, with Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden making an appearance in July as well. The second half of July provides a shot at the Salmon grand slam (all five species, all in one day). In August through the beginning of September, Silver mania sweeps the Kanektok and the Trout just keep getting fatter as fall arrives.

At this lodge, you will be utilising 16 to 18 feet jet-powered flat bottomed boats. They come equipped with stern and bow anchors, two swivel seats and for your safety, life jackets. Each day the boats will be loaded with lunch and drinks and stored in a cooler box.

The boats will be used in different ways depending on the style and chosen species you wish to target. For the Salmon fishing, you may be anchored up while swinging or stripping flies which is a very effective method. When fishing for Trout, the guides will simply remove the seats and drift down the river while you cast, this is a great way of seeing the river while covering a lot of water.

Even though fishing from the boats are fun, most anglers like to fish from the easy wading gravel bars and this is where the jet boats come into their own as they can draft across very shallow areas meaning they can gain access to shallow streams opening up many different fishing opportunities.

Guides

The Alaska West fishing guides all speak very good English and know the area very well as they have worked these waters for a long time so will give you the best possible fishing experience available. They are used to helping many different fishing abilities from first-timers to the more seasoned anglers so you will be in the greatest of care.

Other activities

Being situated in the Alaskan wilderness this camp does not have many other activities, the relaxed atmosphere at this camp means that night times you will be kept entertained.

Questions & Answers

Where is the Lodge?

Alaska West is about a 25-minute boat ride upstream of the native village of Quinhagak. The camp is situated south of Bethel and north of Bristol Bay in western Alaska

Where do they fish?

The main river is called the Kanektok River and of which you will be fishing around 25 miles right up to the mouth of the river. There are many side streams and deep pools located downstream then once you start moving towards the mouth the river narrows and get a little more intimate.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The camp is located on the edge of the River Kanektok so fishing is very close. There are no fly out float planes so no fishing will be impacted by poor weather conditions.

What fish will I catch?

On the Kanektok River, you will find all 5 species of Pacific Salmon along with Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char and Grayling. These can be found throughout this system with certain areas being better for any chosen species.

How many fish will I catch?

This all depends of the time of year you travel and also the species you are targeting. For example, when targeting King Salmon you should expect to have at least a couple of contacts each day and if conditions are perfect then you can receive more. The smaller species like the Rainbows, Dolly Varden and Grayling are a little easier to come by and one should expect double-digit days  and in the past, some anglers have exceeded 50 fish in a single days fishing.

How do they fish?

This all depends on the species you are targeting. If you have come for King Salmon then you will either be fishing anchored up swinging flies or you could be wading the easy to wade gravel bars. The Trout fishing is different and there are a couple of different methods with one of the popular ones being, rowed down the river giving you the chance to cast you single-handed rod or you could find yourself creeping up small side streams stalking rising fish. That’s the great benefit of this destination as the opportunities are endless.

Do the guides speak English?

All our guides and staff all speak very good English

Who is best suited to this destination?

This is another huge advantage of fishing at Alaska West is that due to the diverse fishing methods this destination suits many types of anglers. From Spey casting to scatting small flies on single-handed rods, it really is up to the individual. The guides are used to helping all manner of angling abilities from first-timers to novices, they will be on hand to help in any shape or form.

What skill level is required?

The guides at Alaska West camp have been fishing for many years and they take guiding very seriously. If you are new to fly fishing and need extra help, they can assist or if you are very experienced at this style of fishing but need a little brush up then they will cater. Due to the different rivers available, this destination is suitable for all levels of experience.

How physically demanding is this trip?

The holiday is not that physically demanding as you can fish from the jet-boats if you so wish. If you do this then you will have to be able to get in and out of the boats. The wading areas are very easy wading with no large boulders. Some of the little side streams that hold many Trout are a little walk but on good ground.

When to go?

This all depends on your targets, for King Salmon then it would be the early season then moving to the middle to the late season for larger numbers of fish including Rainbows, Dolly Varden and Grayling. The numbers when conditions are good can be very high.

How to get there?

The best route is to fly in to Anchorage where we will overnight you in a hotel. The next day we will organise a short internal flight from Anchorage to Quinhagak where the team from Alaska West will transfer you via boat to the camp. This will around 25 minutes.

What is the accommodation like?

Even though these tents are basic, they come with all the amenities you would need for an amazing weeks fishing in the remote wilderness. There are solid tents around the camp with the main area being in the middle which is the restaurant and socialising area.

What is the food like?

The food is excellent.  Buffet style breakfast, sandwich bar, shore lunches and buffet-style dinners. All freshly prepared by one of the local chefs that live at the camp. All food is fresh and a good variety will be offered.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

The lodge does have a selection of all the equipment including rods, reels, waders, nets, flies and other essential items. If you do however wish to bring your own then this is also acceptable. A full list of recommended equipment will be provided upon request

Is internet and phone signal available?

As with most Alaskan destinations, there is no phone signal. however, the camp does have internet but it is very basic and only really ideal for answering emails and other basic needs.

Are there other activities available?

Fishing is the primary activity at this lodge. The wildlife is pretty amazing so if you like watching wildlife you will find this as another activity.

How much does it cost?

Our price includes guided fishing, lodging, meals, loaner gear and flies. Additional costs are travel to Anchorage, round-trip charter to and from the river, Alaska sport-fishing license and gratuities for the staff. To view all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

My Son and I went to the Alaska West fishing camp, from the day we arrived there until the day we left, the camp members and the fishing guides worked tireless to make the fishing experience one to remember. Their knowledge of the river and methods to fish sections of the river made all the difference when fishing. they helped us catch fish we could only have dreamed of before we left the UK. My son booked the flights from the UK to Anchorage but the connecting flights from Anchorage to the camp were fine.
Thanks to all concerned for making it a holiday to remember for both my son and I and to fulfil one of my lifetime ambitions.

Helen

Hello Peter, this was our first time fly fishing as you know we normally Big game fish but after listening to you talk about this destination we had to visit. Malcolm enjoyed all the fishing and commented on how good the guides were. We have both fly fished in the UK but that was a million miles away from this type of fishing. Perhaps next year we will take some lessons before we head out there.

Mexico for us next year so can you call us when you are free

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Helen so glad it lived up to your expectations as I knew it would. How did Malcolm get on with his new Rod and reel? Hopefully you took plenty of pictures for us? Helen, I will call soon as Mexico is becoming booked up so we need to get some dates in for you sooner rather than later

All our best

Richard

After the lengthy delay at Heathrow we sadly missed our connecting flight. Thankfully they put us on the next available flight and soon found ourselves arriving at the lodge half a day late. With all the messing about at the airports all we wanted to do was to relax for our first day. the guides at the lodge soon informed us of some great fishing which soon sparked up our spirits. Apart from the disaster with the flights we both had a very good time perhaps next time we should let you organise our internal flight, lesson learnt.

Thanks also BC West camp and staff

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Richard, we were watching the flights as we receive notifications of the flight delays and thankfully they managed to get you guys on the next flights and it did not eat in to your holiday very much. We also heard of the great fishing and was given reports on almost a daily basis. Cant wait to see the pictures from your trip and let us know if you can not work the dropbox invite out.

All the best, Mel

Frank

Mel, what can we say apart from thank you so much. The lodge and staff need a pat on the back as they run this lodge first class. Superb fishing and we all managed what we set out for. Thanks and you should be getting your pictures any day just waiting for wayne to download them

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Frank, thats great to hear and makes our job all the more enjoyable when we receive great feedback like this. I shall pass on your kind words to the lodge

I shall drop you a quick email once we have received all your lovely photos

Thanks, Mel
