Our hosted sea fishing trips to Mefjord are a great way to experience the fishing Norway has to offer without the confusion of knowing where and when to fish. Our hosts have been fishing the Norwegian waters for many years now and will put you on fish each day. They will teach you the rigs that work, how to tie them and when to use them. The hosted Skrei fishing in Mefjord is building a great reputation now for providing anglers with some huge catches of Cod and along with other like-minded anglers, this is a great holiday to smash you Cod Pb’s.
Location
Being located up in the Arctic Circle the destination of Mefjord is a beautiful little Norwegian fishing village, steeped in history. This camp is set in some of Norway’s most picturesque scenery. Surrounded by mountains you will never tire of the views you will wake up to, day after day. In winter these mountains are covered in snow and offer the chance for some phenomenal photograph opportunities. The village of Mefjord is located on one of Norway’s largest Islands called Senja which offers many sheltered fjords in case the open ocean gets a little choppy. Near to the resort, there is a local supermarket that offers all the basic food items so you can enjoy your self-catering holiday.
Fishing
You will be fishing the North Sea and these waters are rich with life and nutrients which makes for some incredible fishing at certain times of the year. In March and April the Skrei Cod flood these waters to breed creating some truly epic big Cod fishing that will rival anywhere in Norway. These Cod reach astronomical sizes with fish being in excess of 70lb and the chance of a 90lb+ fish being a possibility. These fish are caught by drifting over the shoals and using shads to entice them to smash your rod over and give you a fight from a Cod like you would have never experienced before. The Skrei fishing at Mefjord is so appealing to visiting anglers due to the fact that you do not have to travel far to reach the fish, some of these Skrei grounds are under 20 minutes drive from the Harbour in the boat meaning that you could be onto the vast shoals of fish in no time at all.
As this is a Skrei Cod fishing holiday the opportunities for other species is very limited due to the time of the year. The water temperature in March and April is very cold so most summer species will be out in deeper waters, however, you may come across the odd Halibut or Coalfish.
Boats
There are 20 boats parked at the two floating bridges. The boats you will using are 19ft Kværnø aluminium boats equipped with 50 hp four-stroke engines, GPS, chart plotter and fishfinder combined. The boats are very good and safe for the conditions that are on the far side of the island, towards the open ocean. The boats are also equipped with AIS (Automatic Identification System) to improve security and safety. This makes sure that the fishing manager at Mefjord can follow your boat’s position from the land and send a rescue boat in case of an emergency.
Guides
Each day our host will arrange the time to go out whilst keeping a close eye on the weather conditions. The host will be driving one boat and the other boat will be driven by one of the anglers that will follow the host out to the fishing marks. The host will then, each day, swap people around so everyone gets to experience some days fishing with the host. The fishing is divided up into two boats, one boat will have 3 anglers plus the host and the other boat will be based on 4 people fishing.
Other Activities
Mefjord is also a brilliant destination to travel to if you enjoy spotting wildlife. You will have the opportunity of seeing sea eagles swooping down to take fish from the water and reindeer wandering the local area looking for their next meal. When out at sea you will be captivated by the many Puffins and Gannets that you will see diving for baitfish on the water, these beautiful birds will provide many a great photo opportunity if the fishing slows down. If you are very lucky you may encounter the humpback whales that come into the area to feast on the huge shoals of baitfish that appear at certain times of the year.
