Bronze Whaler Shark | Hosted Shore Fishing | Namibia

Overview

Tour code: NAM002

If you have ever dreamt of targeting the top of the food chain from the shore? If so, then this guided Shark Fishing holiday to Namibia is the perfect trip for you to get your teeth into. This will be an exclusive trip for a small group of anglers meaning you will have the maximum attention from our shark fishing guide, ensuring you are getting optimum fishing time with the best advice to catch the Bronze Whaler Sharks.

If a shore caught 300lb + Bronze Whaler Shark is on your bucket list then this is the destination for you to achieve your dream. On top of this, all tackle is included.

Location

You will be fishing the waters around Henties Bay in Namibia, these waters are full of life and this life, in turn, attracts the many predators that you are trying to catch. With the majority of marks under a half-hour drive from the accommodation, you will never be far from the beach in your quest to catch a very big Shark.

Shipwrecks adorn the coastline, including some quite recent ones which make for some amazing photo opportunities. The cold current brings a mass of plankton which in turn, brings the fish and other aquatic species.  Four species of Dolphins, Cape Fur Seals, Whales (Southern Right, Killer and Humpback plus others) and Leatherback Turtles are all found along the coastline along with a massive variety, and amount, of bird species including South African Penguins in the desert!

Fishing

You will be fishing from the shore on long sandy beaches targeting the huge Bronze Whaler Sharks that live here, these fish can grow in excess of 400lb’s and once hooked will give you a fight you will never forget. Along with the massive Bronze Whaler sharks that inhabit this stretch of coastline you will also be able to target some of the smaller species that live here on lighter tackle.

These include Spotted Gully Sharks, Smoothhounds, Eagle Rays, Sand Sharks, and Kabeljou. Rods are typically 14’ one piece and fitted with large multipliers to hold plenty of line.

The baits for the bronze Whalers are big and bloody and will attract the sharks in from a long-distance away. Lighter setups are used for other species like the Rays and Kabeljou. So if you are looking for your very next full on a fishing adventure then why not give this a go. It is one of, if not, the best shore-based Shark fishing experience in the world.  If you would like to see what Namibia Shark fishing is really like, head over to our YouTube channel and take a look for yourself.

Questions & Answers

Where is the destination?

The area you will be fishing is in and around Henties Bay in Namibia situated on the Western Coast of Africa. These are the waters of the world-renowned Skeleton coast and are home to some of the best Shark fishing you will find in the world.

Where will I fish?

Here you will be fishing from the shore at many different marks with big baits, mainly for the many shark species that inhabit these waters but also for other various species that swim here.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

You will be transported to the grounds in a vehicle, depending on the grounds you could be as close as a few minutes drive or a bit further depending on conditions. Some of the best marks are up to an hour away but these are reached by driving on the beach or on well-kept roads.

What fish will I catch?

The main species you will be targeting are the huge Bronze Whaler sharks that patrol these waters but you also have the chance of catching Seven gilled cow sharks, Spotted gulley sharks, Smooth-hounds, Guitarfish, Kabelijou and Steenbras. These fish will all give you a fantastic fight on the tackle that is provided by the guides.

How many fish will I catch?

Your catch rate will vary depending on what species you want to target but the average weight of Bronze Whaler sharks here is 176lb. So you will see some massive fish. When fishing for the smaller species that are classed as edibles the fishing can be fairly busy as many of these fish are shoal fish.

How will I fish?

You will be fishing from the shore using big baits for the sharks. Each person has a rod and nobody will be forced to take a timeout so others can fish. These baits are cast out by hand and do not worry, these big sharks come in very close to the shore and at times can be seen beaching themselves if any scraps of fish are left on the shoreline.

Do the guides speak English?

Yes, the guides speak perfect English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

The angler who wishes to target monster fish from the shore is very well suited to this destination, those who have never caught a Shark will have the best chance possible of catching one from this destination.

What skill level is required?

A basic understanding of fishing from the shore is all that is required. However you will have a guide with you at all times so if you have never done this type of fishing before, you will have all the help you will need to ensure your fishing holiday goes as well as it possibly can be.

How physically demanding is this trip?

You will be fishing in hot weather and these fish really pull back so this fishing is fairly physical. However, you can pass your rod to another angler or the guide if you wish to take a break from the fight as these fights can last well over an hour.

When is the best time to go?

October through to April is when we offer dates and anywhere within these are the best times to go.

How to get there?

Flights leave the UK from Heathrow and stop off in Johannesburg before heading on to Rooikop airport Namibia. You will then be picked up by the guide and transferred to your accommodation (approx 1 hour).

What is the accommodation like?

The Fishermans guesthouse is located a mere 100 metres from the sea. You will be sleeping in modern well-furnished twin rooms ensuring that you get the best nights sleep after doing battle with big sharks all day.

What is the food like?

The speciality is freshly caught fish as well as a variety of other meals. Our chef excels in all types of cooking and can cater to any taste. Vegetarian, vegan and any other type of dish can all be prepared for you.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

A great holiday from start to finish. Louis and Andrew were great guides who worked really hard at for us and we all ended up catching a variety of fish including big 'bronzies' and those epic battles will live long in the memory.
We were made to feel really welcome and the accommodation and food at the guesthouse were truly outstanding which led to some great evenings (what I can remember of them !!) .
Matt was a great host and went out of his way to make sure we all had a great time which I think I'm safe in saying we all did !
Only minor negatives were the flight delays (just unfortunate) and the differences in tickets which resulted in some being able to use the International transfers facility and some not which has been mentioned previously.

I will definitely be interested in doing the Namibia hosted trip again.

First trip of this sort, have done previous to Ebro in Spain with Colin Bunn for wells cats also done Manitoba x 2 for channel cat, this was a wilder more powerful trip rugged wild desert , beaches and the not knowing what your next hook up was going to be. I landed my first Bronze whaler shark on my own second one dropped off after 15 mins, had a great session with spotted gully sharks holding my own with these powerful fighters. I have to say at this time Sportquest Host Matt Crowe listens to everyone's opinion and got respect from all party. I shared many battles with more Bronze whalers as members of our party trusted me 100% to help with bringing in the big ones also boosting up my confidence as a fisherman, the guides were always respectful and always there at the drop of a hat if and when needed. The guesthouse was great and the meals were great is an understatement, they were fantastic, all the party grew stronger as a team before holiday ended.

Hello jock

What a holiday that was for all concerned. You had some fantastic fish to yourself as well as those that you helped the others land.

Thank you for the great feedback and hopefully we will get to chat soon.

A brilliant week in Namibia. Wanted to catch a 100lb+ Bronzie and managed them to over 200lb+ so couldn’t be happier. Also managed to catch a 17lb Steenbras and 5 other species. From the start we were treated like family and I can’t speak highly enough of the guides Louis and Andrew who live for their fishing, even when they aren’t guiding these two are out fishing. Accommodation was fantastic and the food Louis and his wife cooked for us was incredible, steak, fish, bbqs, puddings every night, eggs and bacon every morning for breakfast, I dread to think how much weight I’ve put on! Highly recommend this trip if you want to catch a big shark from the beach (they beat you up so be prepared for a 3 hour plus fight). Just stay away from Louis’ local home brew (it’s lethal!). Can’t wait to return. Flights were perfect for me but could understand why some people were frustrated as some people and their bags were checked in all the way through, some people had to collect their bags at Johannesburg and check in again and some people were even on different flights altogether.

My personal highlight was the catching of a 159lb male bronze whaler after sunset on the last evening. There is something very eerie about holding a rod in your hands standing on a beach in the dark, knowing that monsters are swimming 50 yards in front of you.

If possible take hand luggage only. Actually very few clothes are required. Africa is cold, Namibia especially the beach is no different. A warm fleece is essential.

Hello Hadrian

Thank you for the excellent feedback.

I must say the sharing the experience with you of catching that monster as the light faded is something that will stay with me for a very long time what a marvellous way to finish the holiday that was.

Hopefully i may see you on one of my future hosted trips.

Great destination with some big sharks. I was just unlucky but will return for another go.

Connection time at Johannesburg was very tight with no safety margin

Nice of BA to give me an upgrade but there wasn't time to go in the lounge.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Nick

Thanks for your excellent feedback, you were very unlucky not to hook into a big bronzie whilst over there.

I look forward to seeing you on 2020 hosted trip and we will try and get you a big shark on the beach.
