Guided Vesterålen Fishing Norway Norways Jurassic Park

Customer Rating 90%
Tour Code NOR027

Multi-Species Fishing

Our guided boat fishing trips to Vesterålen in Norway offer incredible mixed fishing opportunities, allowing you to target and catch monster Halibut, Cod, Ling and Coalfish and an array of other species, like Plaice, Wolffish and Redfish. Being a Sportquest exclusive guided trip means you don’t have to worry about driving the boat or finding the fish, as the Nordic Sea Angling guide is on hand, leaving you to concentrate purely on the excellent fishing on offer.

When you book one of our guided weeks with a guide, you benefit hugely from all their years of experience, as many have been fishing in and around the Norwegian waters for many years. All are also fully qualified with all the latest Norwegian guiding certificates and qualifications. There’ll be on hand to advise about the best tackle and tactics to use for the species you want to target and know precisely what marks to fish during each stage of the tide. They allow you to truly maximise your fishing week.

Our guided week gets based on four anglers and a guide, fishing from the camp guide boat – the guide boats are larger in size and feature all the latest safety equipment and recommendations. These trips are ideal for solo travellers, pairs of friends, and groups and are popular amongst first-timers visiting the country. They also provide a great learning experience for those who want to return on a self-drive holiday.

Where is Vesterålen Located

Vesterålen in Norway, is located on the Eidsfjorden, which is a long deep fjord with depths as deep as 200 metres, and features an array of plateaus, peaks and structures that will hold big Cod and Coalfish all year round. The area has also been excellent for the Redfish, a famous quarry amongst anglers due to their superb eating qualities and huge specimen Ling, which can grow to over 5ft in length and weigh over 50lb.

Closer to the land and on the sides of this fjord, you will find some tremendous sandy plateaus, offering fantastic Halibut fishing and the chance to catch some Plaice and Dabs. These popular flatfish grow to specimen proportions, and Plaice over 2kg and Dabs pushing nearly 1kg are not uncommon.

If you continue a short distance to the west or southwest, you will find yourself in the open ocean, where there are many more peaks, channels and plateaus. The population of big Cod, Coalfish and Halibut are plentiful in this area, and you can enjoy a fantastic day’s sport. The fishing area stretches to Hovden, a lighthouse on the northwest side of Vesterålen, about 25 minutes from the camp.

It’s not just the great fishing in this area that has caught our attention; it’s the accommodation on offer. It is of a very high standard for Norway, and we have made sure that the cabins are complete with many modern amenities to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Guided Fishing Trips

We always ensure our guided trips are based around the peak weeks of the year to ensure we offer anglers the best chance to catch their dream fish. Early summer is the preferred time for this guided trip, providing excellent opportunities for Cod, CoalfishHalibut and Ling.

The main fishing ground for the huge Cod and Ling is known locally as ‘Jurassic Park’ and is around 1hr 30minutes from the cabins. Yes, it sounds far, but you will soon forget the drive as the fishing at this location is unreal, and a 50lb Cod is not uncommon. In this area, you will target the huge Ling, and once you have done battle with one of these monsters that range around the 30lb mark, you will want a rest. Halibut can also be caught in this area and grow to epic proportions, as they rarely receive any fishing pressure. The fishing methods for the Halibut can be using either trolled dead baits or jig fishing from the boats.

Another massive bonus about fishing in Norway at Vesteralen is that there isn’t just open ocean fishing but an array of bays and fjords with enormous potential for big fish. So, if you don’t fancy fishing the open ocean, or the weather could be a lot better, your guide will recommend some sheltered alternatives where there is a good chance of getting some action. Whilst many anglers fish in these areas for Halibut, Plaice fishing is also very underrated. Around each corner are potential fishing areas of a sandy bottom with very little flow, perfect spots for some Plaice and Dab to be lurking.

Guided Boat Fishing In Norway

Our guided trip to Vesteralan utilises the camps guide boat, which is still an Arronet aluminium model but is larger than the standard fishing vessels. These boats are famed for their excellent handling and safety at sea. They are very sturdy even in rough conditions and deal with heavy seas. Your guide will drive the boat for you, leaving you to fish and enjoy your time in Norway.

The guide boat is a 25ft Arronet aluminium model and comes fitted with 200hp Suzuki 4 Stroke engines, one of the most fuel-efficient engines money can buy, plus all the relevant safety equipment. The boats’ electronics are also of high standard, with extensive displays on the fish finders and chart plotters. These boats are kept to a very high standard well maintained regularly.

Fishing Guides in Norway

With this being a fully guided boat fishing trip, you will have the luxury of having a Nordic Sea Angling guide with you at all times, meaning you will have the very best help with anything you need. Your guide will drive the boat, find the fish, provide tackle tips and tactics and take pictures; all you have to do is enjoy the fantastic fishing on offer!

At Vesteralen, at least two resident guides are on-site, one at the camp during the day while the other guides the boats. These guides will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and offer fishing and fishing tackle advice.

What's the weather like

We prefer fishing around June and July at this location as it offers the best chance to catch the most species. In June and July, average temperatures are around 15 degrees and sometimes reach 20 degrees. We still advise hiring a flotation suit, as when you are motoring around, it can often feel colder than it is. As with most of our fishing destinations in Norway, we recommend layering up, as it’s better to be warm and be able to remove layers, as opposed to being cold, as this will affect your fishing ability.

Accommodation

PLEASE NOTE our guided trip to Vesteralen utilises the Nordlandscabin with three bedrooms. However, we have listed all the accommodations below for those interested in one of our standard packages, where you can pick the house to suit your needs and group size. The corresponding pictures are of the Nordlandscabin with three bedrooms, while the other accommodation images can be found in the gallery.

The accommodation at Vesteralen is new for 2024 and now offers an array of lodges suitable for all different group sizes and the needs of each. All the cabins have TV, free WIFI, bed linen, towels and final cleaning gets included. There is also a hotel offering single and double rooms with private bathrooms. There is no kitchen for cooking, so dining at the restaurant is required.

The restaurant is located in the hotel building and serves an array of tasty meals; it’s ideal for those anglers who want to avoid cooking and prefer full catering. At the restaurant, it’s also possible to order lunch packages if wanted. An excellent new 2024 offer is that breakfast is now included for all guests!

Other features at the camp include an onsite car that can be borrowed at any time for trips to the shop, filleting tables, a freezer room and a drying room, and an onsite tackle shop to buy or rent tackle.

The cabins are as follows:

Seacabin

These luxury cabins are suitable for groups of up to four people. They feature three bedrooms with two single beds in each. They are ideal for four instead of six, allowing for more space in the living room and the fully equipped kitchen. The cabin has two bathrooms with a shower, a couch and a dining table, and an outside wooden porch with a sea view.

Seacabin With Sauna

These luxury cabins are suitable for groups of up to six people. They feature three bedrooms with two single beds in each. The house is very spacious and finished to a very high standard. It features two bathrooms with a shower and a fully equipped kitchen. The cabin also has a private sauna, which can be lovely after an action-packed day on the water.

Nordlandscabin With Three Bedrooms

These cabins are used in our Vesteralen guided trips and are larger in size and suitable for four to eight people. They feature three bedrooms with single beds in each. The house is more spacious than the Seacabins and offers two bathrooms with showers, two couches, a fully equipped kitchen, a dishwasher, and a dining table. Matthew

Great location with fantastic accommodation and 'away from it all' setting.
Good fishing grounds with some limitations in adverse weather - Huge potential in Calmer conditions for Halibut, Cod and Coalfish.

The guide Marcus is fantastic. Limited by being a one man operation on site.
Recommend Blackout blinds to improve lodges during 24 hour daylight.
Self catering welcome packs. Recommend a 'basket' of Bread, Eggs, Milk, Cheese etc.
Location/fishing grounds/guides. Please send in advance to allow initial planning for the trip. (Nordic do this)
As usual, Minor points as the overall package is very good.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Matt, thanks for your feedback all the tips are very helpful for future travellers.

Sounds like you guys had a great time and caught plenty of big fish.

We do have lots of maps with fishing marks for people who require them. Perhaps we will start to send them out with the paper work. I shall suggest a welcome pack as it is sometimes very helpful especially if your flight arrives late in the day and the shops are closed so that would be a great idea

Our group enjoyed a very memorable trip with excellent accommodation and a great guide called Marcus who could not have been more helpful and actually joined us for a couple of evening meals.

He gave us great information and tips on where to fish.

Your own service has also been outstanding and we all agree that we will be returning to Norway with Sportquest at some point in the future.

Hello Sportsquest, the highlights were the massive Halibut I caught with a little help from the guide. Those fish do hang on and was a real pleasure to see her swim back down. Please pass my thanks on to Paul and the Swedish guide. This was a first for me and I am sure next time there may be more of us, I was a bit of a guinea pig for our fishing club. Speak to you soon

Another fantastic trip with Sportquest. Highlights definitely were:

The location and scenery
seeing orcas in their natural environment
the company - great set of anglers
oh...and a new Halibut PB!

Only improvement suggestion would be to install wardrobes / cupboards in the lodge bedrooms - we were literally living out of a suitcase

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Nick, it was great to see you again and really pleased you managed your Halibut PB. It was an awesome fish. What about the statue, you forget to mention the statue!!

Anyway, hopefully will see you again soon

David

Although the fishing was very good the travelling to the fishing grounds I thought was to long 4.5 hours one day when the sea was rough. Seeing killer whales to me was the highlight. Sometimes I just want to go fishing on a holiday at a respectable hour and not get up early in the morning to catch big fish and long distances

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hello David, Thank you for your feedback. Yes it was a tough weeks weather and those long distances would of been half the time if the sea was flat calm. But when we got out there the fishing was worth it with two Cod pushing 50lb and those ling made the journey worth it. Those Killer whales we saw were amazing and to have them so close to the boat was even more exciting.

Honestly I have no complaints! Except for the weather which is beyond anyone control, this trip could not have been better.
Alex and Jorgan went above and beyond what we expected them to do. They were both very knowledgeable and experienced in their jobs. Each night they came to the cabin and asked us what we wanted to fish for the following days as well as giving advice as to what was available and where to go to fulfill our request.
By the end of the week these two gentlemen earned my respect and trust, I would not hesitate to repeat this trip and recommend Sport Quest Holidays to anyone looking for an adventure of a time. This was my second trip from the US to Norway and I am looking forward to a 3rd I the future.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi John, So glad it was another successful trip for you guys. Its always a pleasure to send you guys to Norway as I know how much you love your fishing and thank you for taking the time to fill out your form, they are extremely important to us and the guides to ensure we are all doing our jobs properly. Please spread the word around as we love having anglers from the States. Hopefully we can catch up soon
