Dove Shooting | La Dormida Lodge | Cordoba | Argentina

Overview

Tour code: ARG111

Built on the tradition of over 20 years of dove shooting experience, La Dormida is the newest and most exclusive dove shooters accommodation ever offered in Cordoba, which has already received acclaim from Argentina’s journals of design and decoration. La Dormida is run and organised by David Denies whose dove shooting and hunting lodges are famous for their unparalleled service. Building upon these traditions our staff at La Dormida has been specially trained in the art of caring for private parties.

Location

La Dormida is located in the province of Cordoba, in Central Argentina 80 miles (130km) north of the Córdoba City International Airport which is approximately 1 hour 35 minutes away. It is widely considered the dove shooting capital of the world, with 100 square mile radius (160 km) around the lodge is annually inhabited by over 50.000.000 million doves, and the birds reproduce over five times per year. For the uninitiated, this is quite possibly shooting heaven and whether you are a veteran or a relative novice you will be able to find sport to match. From the moment you arrive in Argentina, our service is personalised and attention is paid to every imaginable detail, from airport reception to uniformed bird boys in the field. The David Denies standard has no equal and makes a visit to Cordoba a shooting holiday without peer.

Shooting

Forget what you’ve heard about dove hunting in Mexico, or what you used to hear about the doves in Colombia. Simply put, the dove hunting available in our part of Córdoba is, on its worst day, amazing, and more typically is beyond comparison with any other dove hunting resource around the globe. Your host Joaquin Dartiguelongue has provided guests with the best hunting opportunities and gracious hospitality for the past 10 years so you will be comforted at the fact that you will be in good hands.

The program generally starts at 8:00 AM with a hearty breakfast and short drive to the shoot. In the field, you will be assigned a pick-up boy, who will provide you with shells and refreshments and direct you to your shooting stand. The birds fly in literally waves, darkening the skies and whether you wish to focus on sheer numbers or go for the most challenging shots the options are yours. The lodge maintains 55 shooting fields all within a short drive through the region’s rolling farmland. You will be visited frequently by our head guide who will be available to assist you with any need, even giving you some tips on your shooting if required. Depending on the time of the year you will shoot till noon when you will be treated to an incredible barbecue lunch, shaded by a comfortable safari tent, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. The afternoon begins at around 2 or 2:30 PM and continues until almost dark. There is no quitting time, good sense and tired shooters dictate when the day is through.

This is a true all year round location and makes an excellent addition to any other activities you might have in mind during a trip to Argentina or Chile. The opportunity to hunt all year round is very much an advantage for the discerning Dove hunter. You can choose which season you wish to shoot in and experience the difference in the way they shoot the quarry from each quarter of the year. From deep valleys and wind to shoot to local farms and hills.

Additional Activities

There are optional trips to consider when in Argentina such as historical tours, sightseeing, shopping and horse riding for the more adventurous amongst you. For more subtle activities the lodge offers a massage room for the ultimate relaxation, an outdoor plunge pool and a fire pit for those lazy evenings catching up with stories told and a drink in your hand.

Accommodation
La Dormida Lodge

With many its classed as a favourite and we can see why. Maybe it’s the dusk to dawn Dove flights where birds cross the landscape in waves measured in miles. Or perhaps it’s the short drives to the rolling hills, or the opulent field lunches served under a shade of canvas. However, it could be the lure of the most beautiful custom built, modern lodge itself with its perfect status as a sporting retreat for Dove hunters. A lodge which enjoys one of the highest rates of return in the hunting industry, with guests returning year on year for the stylish living and incredible hunting.

The Lodge

Built on the tradition of over 20 years of Dove shooting experience, La Dormida is the newest and most exclusive dove shooters accommodation ever offered in Cordoba, which has already received acclaim from Argentina’s journals for design and decoration, plus a huge reputation as one of the top lodges for quality of service.

Situated in the secluded foothills of the Sierras Chicas, you and your private party can enjoy the comforts of a lodge you can call your own, in complete seclusion relaxed on the veranda enjoying the peace and quiet.

La Dormida will accommodate 10 dove shooters, or depending on the configuration of the group. We have 4 single rooms, each with a large (queen) bed and 3 double rooms with two beds in each. All rooms have private (en-suite) baths. In addition, La Dormida offers a large dining room with a spectacular dining table, a sitting room and bar and a large, comfortable courtyard with a fire pit and a plunge pool. It also has many of the important necessities and some extras that you may or not expect to find in a shooting lodge, including; a recreation room, gun cleaning table and facilities, telephone, Internet access (WIFI), maid and laundry service and masseuse. Gift shop offers local artwork and crafts, logo wear and accessories.

Food and Drink

At La Dormida,  dining experiences are taken seriously, and they strive to make every meal as wonderful as every trip to the field. They offer à la carte dining to shooting guests. Their kitchens come to life through the use of fresh and regionally represented meats and produce. By combining these elements, they create delicious flavours and varied textures that harbour hidden stories and package traditions on each plate. A top-notch team of experienced national and international chefs, trained in both classic and avant-garde culinary techniques, deliver your food. With an artisan’s touch, chefs prepare every dish by scratch to be served at a minute’s notice.

Days start with a hearty breakfast composed of a variety of homemade breads, jam, meadow honey, fresh fruit, natural yoghurts, cereals and eggs (prepared any one of six ways), porridge, French toast and the daily special. Their legendary field lunches at Cordoba are all about asado-style cooking. Lunch is served al’ fresco in the hunting area each day featuring a variety of choice meats and salads, grilled Dove breasts, short ribs, plus lamb, grilled chicken, etc. Bread comes from their own bakery. Beverages and delicious deserts are included. The evening meal is a celebration of fine dining in a casual setting, and it is a chance for their house chefs to really shine. Again, options are a la carte, so if you are enjoying their famous beef and wish to enjoy a steak each evening, they’ll happily grill one to order, but if you’d dare be a bit more adventurous and wish to try Risotto with calamari ink, or grilled trout with tomato puree, then they’d encourage you to sample their specialty dishes. Finally, there are the desserts, each day brings a new creation, from flan to our local delight, dulce de leche, plus fruit, homemade ice creams, and pies.

Wines

Their lunch and dinner menus are paired with some of Argentina’s—and the world’s—best wines from Bodega Catena Zapata. They feel that the food they present and the wines we serve should mirror the sporting opportunities they offer—and be the very best available. Boasting accolades from the wine community at large, a Bodega Catena Zapata wine recently received a “number four in the world” icon ranking from Wine Advocate. These are truly great wines that hold a special place in their culture and are proud to serve them to you.

Questions & Answers

WHERE IS THE LODGE?

La Dormida lodge is in the Cordoba province nestled in the heart of Argentina. Resting 80 miles north of Cordoba City International Airport which is approximately 1 hour 35 minutes away.

WHERE DO THEY SHOOT?

It is widely considered the dove shooting capital of the world, with 100 square mile radius (160 km) around the lodge is annually inhabited by over 50.000.000 million doves, and the birds reproduce over five times per year. For the uninitiated, this is quite possibly shooting heaven and whether you are a veteran or a relative novice you will be able to find sport to match. Hunting access to more than 250,000 acres ensures year-round variety and quality.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH THE SHOOTING GROUND?

It is only a short drive to the rolling hills as they have hunting access to more than 250,000 acres surrounding the lodge, you will never be more than 5 minutes away from shooting.

WHAT QUARRY WILL I BE SHOOTING?

You will be shooting Non-Migratory Eared Doves during your time in Cordoba.

WHAT WILL THE BAG BE?

The bag will depend on exactly how many birds you can shoot within the day. On average you will be shooting around 1,500 cartridges a day.

HOW DOES THE DAY WORK?

The program generally starts at 8:00 AM with a hearty breakfast and short drive to the shoot. In the field, you will be assigned a pickup boy, who will provide you with shells and refreshments and direct you to your shooting stand. Depending on the time of the year, you will shoot till noon when you will be treated to an incredible barbeque lunch, shaded by a comfortable safari tent, tasting some of Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb wines. The afternoon begins at around 2 or 2:30 PM, and continues until almost dark. There is no quitting time, good sense and tired shooters dictate when the day is through. After, you will return to the lodge for cocktails and an early dinner.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

All the guides and lodge staff speak very good English.

WHO IS BEST SUITED TO THIS DESTINATION?

A keen and well-seasoned wing shooter would appreciate this destination due to the opportunity for a selection of challenging birds. However, at the same time it would be an ideal place for the beginner and intermediate gun to try his hand at plentiful well-presented birds whilst being well looked after on their peg.

WHAT SKILL LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

Both experienced and beginner wing shooters can fully appreciate the delights of this trip. With the high and testing birds for the more well-seasoned gun down to the countless opportunities to improve their skill on the copious amounts of low incoming targets for the less experienced.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS THIS TRIP?

This is a fairly low key affair with regards to the amount of walking and lugging equipment about. However, be prepared to be shooting an incredibly hefty amount of shells through your gun during the day’s sport as this can in itself be very punishing on the shoulder by the end of the day. A decent shoulder pad and/or a shooting vest should help with this.

WHEN TO GO?

All year round, it will be August to February that will have high birds at this time.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Depart UK on route to Buenos Aires Airport and from there you will take a connecting flight to Cordoba.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Amazing time from start to finish!

Luke

I am so glad that you guys enjoyed the trip, I look forward in seeing all the pictures soon.

Kevin

Over all we all had a great trip and enjoyed ourselves. I have put a few posters below:

BA business class was not that clever. It was OK but not anything like BC on Emirates. Food OK ish and beds a bit uncomfortable. Great transfers, Gaby met us and she took us for lunch before getting us to the airport on time.

The lodge was good, but in my opinion not as good as Sierra Verde (H&H) but clean and OK. We where disappointed with the spirit selection (only cheap spirits like Beefeater gin? No Bombay!) but OK.

The food was good/ adequate. Again, no way near as good as Sierra Verde and the risotto was awful. Most guys had problems with stomachs at some point (we had exact opposite at Sierra Verde!) so I fear something is amiss with water/ cleaning/ hygiene? All used bottle water for teeth brushing/ drinking etc but we still had ‘issues’

The shooting was better than Sierra Verde and good variation but for two of the days we were travelling 2 hours to get to the shooting grounds and on top of an early start/ boring roads/ late back, these days it was a bit too much.

Shooting Guide – Good. Jack was OK but was borderline sarcastic/ miserable (and don’t worry, we are the biggest bunch of pee takers out there!). Just felt hard work. Rationing of wine at lunch didn’t go down too well. Felt like we had to ask for everything… Just a bit hard work whereas H&H couldn’t do enough for us

Staff and Service – Good. Pepe was great but again, too much for him to really look after us. H&H had a couple of staff and we just felt more cossetted, more looked after.

First two days they were painting the plunge pool so we couldn’t even cool off as it was hot after a days shooting.

Hi kevin

Thanks for the review and feedback as always its very important. It was also good to catch up on the telephone and go over the points raided in the feedback.

I am sorry for a few of the small points and I will be reporting these back to the operator. I am glad in all that you all enjoyed the trip and as you said the guys who's trip this was their first experience of Dove shooting they loved it. But some of you have travelled with us before to our other lodges so you quite rightly had something to bench mark this lodge against.

Again thanks for your custom and I look forward in looking after you all again.

David

We had an excellent time at La Dormida. The only complaint from our group was that we didn’t stay long enough. Everything at the lodge was perfect – the setting, the accommodations and the food. I was very impressed with the logistics involved and they all handled them perfectly

We had a delightful time. From the pick up at the airport to the departure everything seemed to flow smoothly. The food was superb and plentiful. The hunts were, as always, terrific fun. Overall an absolutely fantastic trip…

I just want to thank you for everything you did to make my hunting experience even better. The lodge was so beautiful and it is obvious that it is being very well managed by you. Jacob

Everthing was great! The hunt, the food, and the accommadations were by far the best I have ever had

Brendan

I was blown away with the shooting and with the quality that the members of this establishment holds themselves to. Absolute excellence!
