Panama Sport Fishing Lodge | Panama

Overview

Tour code: PAN010

Every sport fisherman has heard of stories of how world-class the fishery is in Panama and it’s no wondering when Panama is the home to so many IGFA records of all manner of species and our Panama big game fishing resort is right in the thick of it. The Gulf of Chiriquí is a real treasure of Panama and with the likes of world-renowned areas such as Hannibal Bank and Isla Montuosa being the fishing grounds it is no wonder why so many Sport fishermen travel to this magical area to target the many different inshore and offshore species. The huge advantage of Panama is both the inshore and offshore is as equally as good as each other. It is rare that locations offer world-class fishing in both off and inshore, but Panama does and this is why it has been able to build such a hefty reputation over the years.

Location

The Gulf of Chiriquí is located along Panama’s Pacific Coast and stretches towards the border of Costa Rica on the west and to the east, you will find the Azuero Peninsula. This magical and stunning region has one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean and is the largest island in Panama. It has miles upon miles of unspoilt white sandy beaches, remote islands and two beautiful marine parks and it’s not just the sport fishing that attracts people it also has first-class surfing and a huge amount of diving opportunities.

The Gulf of Chiriquí is relatively remote and largely unspoilt, it certainly is less developed than many other parts of Panama. It has been classed by many conservationists as one of the most ecologically important areas in Central America.

Fishing

From the lodge, you will have perfect access to some of the most famous fishing areas known in Panama such as Hannibal Bank, Isla Montuosa, Isla Ladrones just to mention a few. A reason why the fishing in the Gulf is so very good is the fact that you will be navigating above submerged islands and pinnacles that reach from 50ft to thousands of feet and the unique terrain along with the currents push nutrients and oxygen to the surface of the sea more so than normal. In turn, the baitfish congregate in huge numbers and make for exceptional sport fishing opportunities.

The Sportfishing Lodge is one of the closest lodges to all the hot spots so with the excellent fleet of boats at your disposal you can reach Panama’s sport fishing grounds in a comfortable and timely manner. This will give you more fishing time to hook up to that dream catch of your choice.

Hannibal Bank – one of the most well recognised and heard of areas off Panama is located 48 nautical miles from the lodge and is one of the most unique fishing grounds in the world. The bank runs for five miles long and is a staggering three miles wide. The banks are characterized by deep water and benefit from the Humboldt Current that brings along an abundance of plankton to the surface, in turn, provides a prolific food chain for trophy-sized Yellowfin Tuna. Its not just the Tuna that use this bank as their food larder, many Black and Blue Marlin are caught in this area and with it being a 70-minute boat ride from the marina, it certainly has to be an area you must visit at least once.

Isla Montuosa – Another famous fishing area off Panama’s coast is Isla Montuosa and it can be located just 40 nautical miles from the lodge and is a very productive area to fish. Fish such as Sailfish, Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and huge Snappers can all be caught here. The grounds consist of undersea pinnacles creating the ideal popper fishing for Marlin, Yellowfins, Mullet Snapper and Broom-tail Grouper.

Isla Ladrones – The meaning of this island is “Thieves Island” and is a short 17 nautical mile trip from the marina. The grounds are very interesting here and provide perfect fishing areas for Roosterfish, Cubera Snappers and a huge array of exotic types of Tuna and Jacks. This area will suit all types of lure fishing from popper fishing, stick bait fishing shallow trolled lures and also bait fishing.

Isla Secas – This stunning archipelago is the perfect place for some live bait fishing due to the sheer amount of baitfish found in this area. It is a short 15 nautical steam from the marina. The waters around here to home to some pretty amazing species such as the white-tip shark, Rays, Roosters, Amberjacks, Wahoo, Barracuda and lots of Rainbow runners, a real dream area for those who like to drift live baits behind the boats.

Isla Parida – This is one of the closest to the marina and is only 4 nautical miles from the lodge. This location is fringed in luscious mangroves where you will enjoy sights of Sea Turtles and Dolphins swimming freely. These very rich fishing grounds offer the lure anglers great chances for Amberjacks, Cero Mackerel, Wahoo, Roosters, Barracuda and Rainbow Runners.

Boats

At the lodge, there is a boat for everyone and everyone’s budget and fishing style. The fleet consists of 32ft Blackfins with fighting chairs and a good amount of shade. These boats are more aimed towards people who like a little bit more luxury when out fishing. They come complete with Lee outriggers, 8 Tuna tubes, live-bait tanks, fighting chair and popper fishing station. They all come complete with trolling rods and reels that are kept to the highest standard. These boats are ideal for going further offshore to places like Hannibal Bank and Isla Montuosa.

With-in the fleet of luxury boats, you have access to boats that are more used for the inshore fishing, closer areas such as Isla Ladrones, Isla Secas and Isla Parida. The stylish Caribre Pro 26ft centre console boats are perfect for a day’s popper and lure fishing with them being able to sneak up close and personal to areas the bigger boats can not reach. They all come equipped with GPS, Sounder, Fish Finder, VHF radio and live-bait tanks. These boats do not have a toilet.

The above is the standard boats we use but there are many other options available that will suit anybody’s style and budget. Please enquire if you would like us to offer an alternative boat.

Guides

The guides at the lodge are regional famous and are true Sportfishing legends, when you go out with these guides you know you will be in for an amazing fishing trip. The Captains have so many years under their belts of fishing these waters, whether that’s on a commercial basis or a sport fishing basis, rest assured you will be in the best of hands and all the Captains speak very good English.

Other activities

As you would expect from a top-class lodge there are many other activities on offer from eco-tours, diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding, kayaking and so much more. More anglers are now wanting to take the odd day off from fishing or simply extending their trips to accommodate some eco-tours and you will not be disappointed with this location as they pride themselves in offering everything you would ever need. The lodge can even offer exclusive stays in pure luxury on completely deserted islands where it will be just you and nature while staying in some luxury accommodation. Questions & Answers

WHERE IS THE LODGE?

The Gulf of Chiriquí is located along Panama’s Pacific Coast and stretches towards the border of Costa Rica on the west and to the east, you will find the Azuero Peninsula. This magical and stunning region has one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean and is the largest island in Panama.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REACH THE FISHING GROUNDS?

This all depends on the areas you are fishing in. Hannibal Bank is 48 nautical miles from the lodge. Isla Ladrones is 17 nautical mile trip from the marina. Isla Montuosa – Another famous fishing area off Panama’s coast is Isla Montuosa and it can be located just 40 nautical miles from the lodge. Isla Secas – is a short 15 nautical steam from the marina.

WHAT FISH WILL I CATCH?

Panama is a great year-round fishing destination and most species can be targeted year-round. There are peak months where the numbers of a certain species are greater. Our species table on the “Overview” tab will give you some idea of timings.

HOW MANY FISH WILL I CATCH?

This all depends on the species and fishing method you chose. If you were to go out trolling for billfish then on a good day you should set your target for one billfish. These are not shoaling fish but at certain times of the year, you could see up to three billfish a day. If you decided to go popper fishing for Yellowfin then you could catch up to 10 fish in any day. These fish really fight hard and catching this many in a day can be tiring. The inshore fishing can be more productive than offshore, days of three to four Roosters are common whereas the Cubera Snapper can be a little more difficult and one a day is a good result.

HOW WILL I FISH?

As this is a multi-method destination the fishing style is down to you. If you want to spend the week popper and jig fishing the guides will take you to areas that these methods are more productive. If you prefer to sit back and troll then the captain and deckhands will set the equipment to cater for this.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH?

All the captains and deckhands speak perfect English, however, it is sometimes nice for them if you practise the local language.

WHO IS BEST SUITED TO THIS DESTINATION?

This destination is perfect for a huge variety of anglers from beginners to the most expert of anglers. Your skipper will help you with every style of fishing and if you have never lured fished for hard fighting species before they will give you some lessons. Fly fishing is also a great method and again our skippers will be on hand to help you with everything.

WHAT SKILL LEVEL IS REQUIRED?

General knowledge of saltwater fishing is advantageous however the captain and deckhand are more than used to helping people with little to no knowledge. Having saltwater fishing knowledge will, of course, put more fish on the boat especially if you want to popper and jig fish as the technique used for this style of fishing takes some practice.

HOW PHYSICALLY DEMANDING IS THIS TRIP?

Depending on the style of fishing you chose to do. If you only wish to troll then this style is not that physically challenging apart from reeling in the fish, which as you know is physically tiring. If you want to practise popper and jig fishing then this is physically demanding and you must be able to stand on a boat and cast all day.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?

Like mentioned before, this destination fishing all year round. There are peaks months for certain species which be found at the bottom of the “Overview” tab. If you would like to enquire about a certain species please call us and a member of the team will be more than happy to advise.

HOW WILL I GET THERE?

From the UK, there are several different routes. We find that the quickest route is via Madrid then on to Panama city where you will then overnight. Next day there is a small flight from Panama City to David City. The other route is via Amsterdam but the overnight in Panama is still advisable.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Located on Isla Boca Brava in the Gulf of Chiriquí on the Pacific coast of Panama. This all-inclusive Panama fishing resort is only 40 mins from the sportfishing  grounds of Panama. All private bungalows have air conditioning, hot water, outdoor terraces, and spectacular ocean views, while larger family fishing groups can use the Villa or Beach House which occupy up to six guests.

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?

The restaurant’s 180-degree view is the perfect setting to enjoy the catch of the day or meat selections. You will also find an extensive vegetarian and sushi menu and dessert specialities as well. All the food produce is locally sourced from local farmers and is classed as ‘from field to table’

IS FISHING TACKLE PROVIDED?

All trolling equipment is supplied free of charge and is of the highest standard. If you want to Popper fish or jig fish you will need to bring all your own equipment. A full list of recommended tackle can be requested, just ask a member of the Sportquest team.

IS INTERNET AND PHONE SIGNAL AVAILABLE?

There is very limited phone signal around the island however the resort does run free WIFI for all its customers.

ARE THERE OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE?

As you would expect from a top-class lodge there are many other activities on offer from eco-tours, diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding, kayaking and so much more. More anglers are now wanting to take the odd day off from fishing or simply extending their trips to accommodate some eco-tours and you will not be disappointed with this location as they pride themselves in offering everything you would ever need. The lodge can even offer exclusive stays in pure luxury on completely deserted islands where it will be just you and nature while staying in some luxury accommodation. If you are looking for more of an exotic wildlife tour then why not try the Whale watching tours or be taken on one of the best bird watching days of your lives.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all available weeks and prices click the “Dates and Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange your own we can book just the lodge and fishing for you. If you wish to book or have any questions please call our offices on 01603 407596.
