Bluefin Tuna Fishing | Prince Edward Island | Nova Scotia

Tour code: CAN011

If you are in search of a real specimen, then Prince Edward Island Bluefin Tuna fishing in Nova Scotia is the place for you. The Bluefin Tuna surrounding the Island are beasts and will test any angler to his limit. These huge Tuna grow over 1000lb’s and are caught regularly by anglers on stand up and fight gear, but make sure you take your “A” game as these fish fight dirty.

Fishing off Prince Edward Island started to kick off in 1967. Back then the Bluefin Tuna were known locally as Horse Mackerel. Locals classed them as nuisance fish as they tore the fishermen’s nets to pieces. Some years later, the word started to spread around the sportfishing community, which lead to a boom in fishing charters. All were taking anglers fishing to target Bluefin Tuna. The monsters caught were more than 1000lb. Nowadays, Prince Edward Island is known globally as the “Tuna Capital of the world.”

If you embark on a Prince Edward Island fishing trip, you will be blown away this spectacular destination, creating a phenomenal amount of re-bookings on return from customers. The Island is a province off the coast of Nova Scotia in Eastern Canada. The friendly nature of the local people, delicious fresh seafood, dreamy blue water and the giant Bluefin Tuna fishing is what attracts thousands of visitors each year. Head over to our YouTube channel to see what the Bluefin Tuna Fishing in Canada is really like.

Bluefin Tuna fishing in Nova Scotia is primarily regarded as one of the best fishing experiences in the world. You will be deep-sea fishing from a boat skippered by one of the very best Bluefin Tuna charters out there.

You will be fishing with heavy tackle, designed for the mighty Bluefin Tuna. You will be fishing with Mackerel baits, either by using a kite or by chumming the fish in close to the boat. We use the very best newly custom-built 45ft fibreglass fishing boat, powered by a 430 horsepower Cummins engine.

Onboard it is equipped with top of the line electronics including a 3D bottom charting plotter. The boat also has radar equipped with “structure scan technology”. The Captain, Scott, is proud to be the two-time winning boat captain of the Canadian Tuna Cup Tournament.

This award is presented to the Captain, who’s charter landed the largest Bluefin Tuna during the competition. Good friend Ken is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having landed the most giant Bluefin Tuna ever. Weighing in at an unbelievable 1496 pounds!

You will be fishing on board Scott’s boat, which will be your private charter for as many days as you have booked. His team will ensure that you are fishing in the correct areas. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced angler, Scott will teach you the methods to land one of these giants successfully. All tackle, equipment, and training will be provided to ensure you have the best time.

Scott Bruce originated from Prince Edward Island, Canada and is the third generation of the fisherman who have spent their lives fishing this area. They have made their livings from the Lobster and Tuna fishing off the coast of Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Being raised in this environment, Scott learned the life skills needed to be a successful fisherman, and he soon found himself fishing even in his spare time.

He soon realised at a young age the importance of a good education. Scott enrolled at the St. Francis Xavier University, where he got his degree in Bachelor of Science and a major in Physical Education. It wasn’t long before the salty air was calling Scott back and in 1997 he found himself in possession of his very own fishing boat so he could fish for Lobster and Tuna and the rest is history.

To give you some idea of how long and more importantly how successful Scott has been, back in 2016 Scott completed his 20’th year of taking people out from all over the globe all in search of these enormous Bluefin Tuna.

Questions & Answers

You will be staying in the Nova Scotia cottage. This charming little house is surrounded by some of the best views on the Island, giving you great access to the Harbour, where your days fishing will start. Inside this lovely typical Canadian Cottage, you will find 2 bedrooms with two beds in each room, a bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen, giving you everything to make your stay enjoyable and effortless.

You will be fishing the Atlantic Ocean, the area around Prince Edwards Island is renowned as a Bluefin Tuna hotspot with some truly monstrous fish working their way through here.

This all depends on where the fish are on the day, sometimes they may be as close as under half an hour steam from the harbour.

The main target species here are the Bluefin Tuna which reach truly epic sizes. The skipper has been targeting these fish for many years now and there is nothing he doesn’t know about the movements of these fish.

When targeting these very large fish it is possible to only catch 1 fish a day, but this fish could well be the monster that you have dreamt about with an average weight of 750LB and sometimes trophy fish of over 1000LB are landed.

You will be fishing from a boat using Mackerel fish baits, these will either be presented off a kite or close to the boat whilst attracting fish with a chum slick. When you are surrounded by a shoal of these Tuna it is like watching cars drive through the water, their sheer size and power moves so much water and when there are lots of fish over 700LB swimming around the boat a carefully placed Mackerel bait will be all it takes.

The guides speak perfect English along with several other languages.

This destination is best suited to the angler who wishes to catch that one monster fish that they have always dreamt about. It really is a specimen hunters destination where you could see yourself attached to a Tuna over 1000LB and with fish of this size being the main target the fishing sometimes can be tricky.

A basic understanding of playing fish is required, these fish are very strong and powerful and you will not want to be left wondering what to do as these fish run. However, your skipper is more than used to people with little to no knowledge so rest assured if you fancy trying this then you will be in very good hands.

This is a very physical trip, the Bluefin Tuna is a super powerful fish and will test your body to its limits. You will be provided with a very good quality body harness which will take some of the strain. Alternatively there is a fighting chair that will take the ease  of most of the battle.

The season runs from July to October with the peak time being September and October.

You will depart from the UK (alternative routes available) and arrive in Halifax Nova Scotia. From Halifax, you will fly to Charlottetown where you will pick up your hire car and drive yourself to the accommodation.

Thanks Paul for helping me organise this surprise birthday present. my partner had the best time and I am still hearing about how long it took to get the Tuna in. Perhaps next time we should look at something for me.....

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Lauren, thank you for your kind words. It was sometimes a little tricky to get this organised without your partner knowing but we got there in the end. Hope he loved and will try and catch up with him in the next couple of days. If he doesn't mind, I will try and get some pictures off him and we can use them on our website....

All the best Paul

Top marks

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Larry, thanks for your feedback and it was really great to speak to you on your return. You mentioned that you may want to go back, let me know as soon as you can as I know they are getting tight on peak dates.

I will call you again in the next couple of weeks

All the best Paul

Thanks for the holiday. Everything went well but could have done with a bigger hire car

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Terry, Sorry that you got a small car. When we book the cars it always states "or car of similar size' We will make a point next time to specify a certain size. Thank you for your feedback

All the best Paul

We managed to get a Tuna of estimated 900lb to the boat with lots of help from Scotts crew. Great experience and with us only ever doing Marlin fishing once before, this Tuna fishing was something else. Seeing all those Tuna swimming around the boat was mind-blowing. They were like the size of small cars swimming around. Thanks Sportquest and please send me a memory stick out

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Wow Gary, told you they were big. Scott and his crew are very good and only ever hear good things about them. I have only ever seen videos of the Tuna swimming around and would love to see it for myself one day. Thanks for your feedback and speak to all soon.

I will get a memory stick out to you

All the best Paul

Well, what can I say. Scott is very good at his job and with us being fairly new at this type of fishing he soon had us acting like we were experts. The boat is great and so is the fishing. The Rollo Bay Inn is a little basic but served a purpose. Thanks

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Sidney, thanks for your feedback. Yes the Inn is a little basic but its fairly near everything including the harbour. So glad Scott looked after you guys. I was emailing him each evening to make sure things were ok and he seemed to think you all were enjoying yourselves.

Where to next then?

All the best Paul

My arms a just a little longer after doing battle with those Tuna. When you said they pulled hard you were not joking. I would highly recommend any sports angler to try this at least once in their life time. Plus we witnessed the skipper almost hand feeding these beasts taking the bait literally inches from his hand. Thanks for making our dreams come true.

The only negative things was that it would be great to have an organised transfer as neither of us like driving abroad and after such a long flight it was the last thing that either of us wanted to do was drive for an hour or so to the accommodation, but saying that it was handy to have a hire car as the accommodation was set in stunning scenery but very quiet area so we headed out every night.

All in all top marks

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Darren I did try and tell you that you should get your self up the gym! It really is an extreme experience and one that I wish I had the time to do myself. Maybe one day.

The transfer part of the holiday is the only bad comment we get for this destination but we have tried to book taxi's and they have not turned up and we can not find a good reliable ground handler that sticks to what they say. We know its not ideal having to pick up a hire car but like you mentioned, having the car with you is great for the evenings so you can off and explore a bit.

Would love to see your pictures soon plus I heard you have got some great under water footage of the fish feeding? Would love to see it.

What a disaster with regards to the flights. We were late leaving Edinburgh making us miss our connecting flight from London. After a quick call to you guys and a further whack on the credit card you had us booked on the next available flight. Once we finally arrived the office of the hire car company was closed and we were stuck at the airport very late in the day. Thank god you gave us an emergency phone number to call. We soon got picked up by our skipper and taken to our hotel.

Apart from the little disaster with the flights, the fishing was world class and we managed to all catch fish of our dreams.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Steve. Thats the advantages of booking with a Travel agent we are always here to help. So glad it all worked out right in the end and you all caught some big fish.

I shall pass on your comments to Paul and he can reply to you when he returns from Norway

Best Regards

Hi Paul, what a trip we have all just experienced. Not many fish but still the size of the two we caught were absolutely huge. The first fish was 900LB + we could not believe the size of these fish and the sheer power they had. Learnt some great new techniques like kite fishing..... what a way to fish and may try it at home for other species we will let you know how we get on with it.

Everything went well and hopefully they may find my Ipad one day

All our best, Mark, John, Simon and Leon

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Mark the skipper of your boat phoned us the night you guys caught the big one saying you were having a great time. He commented on how the fishing was a little slow and I thought having two fish over 700Lb between you was pretty good going. I will try and catch up with you soon as I know how busy you normally are.

Cant wait to see the pictures of you guys with that Tuna, speak soon

Awesome trip guys thanks for making a childhood dream come true. My brother caught the biggest Tuna of the trip at an estimated 850LB and it looked every part of that.

The accommodation was very good, a little quiet for us but we were there for the fishing. Thanks Sportquest

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Pat, we did hear you guys had a great trip. I believe you caught at least one fish a day!! And a huge congratulations to your brother what a fish.

Yes the accommodation is a little remote thats why we recommended a hire car so you can take a look around the place. Whats next for you guys? Maybe a big shark trip?

Speak with you soon
