Shark Fishing Namibia

The Namibian coast boasts one of the largest populations of Bronze Whaler Sharks in the world. These long sandy beaches are the perfect place to catch the Bronze whaler sharks with not many snags at all to get hooked up on when playing these big brutal fish. The Bronze Whalers patrol the shoreline in search of an easy feed, and they will find plenty of bait fishing in this area.

These vast sharks can reach well over 400lbs. You will be targeting these fantastic fish from the shore on heavy surfcasting tackle and bait.

The Bronze Whaler Shark is mighty and puts up one of the best fights from the shore you will ever have experienced. You will also be targeting such fantastic species such as the prehistoric-looking Seven-Gilled Cow Shark, the Spotted Gully Shark, huge Smoothhounds, Lesser Guitar Fish, various Rays, Kabeljou, Steenbras and other smaller species.

Namibia Shark fishing is world-renowned as a genuinely fantastic destination to fish and target the monsters that lurk around here. The beaches here are long sandy expanses that have massive fish running up and down them. Are you up for a fishing experience unlike any other you will find?

Skeleton Coast Shark Fishing

Shore-based Shark fishing in Namibia takes place from the beaches along the Skeleton Coast. This stunning coastline sits in the cold, nutrient-rich Benguela current of the Southern Atlantic. Coupled with the hot Namib desert that extends the entire Namibian coastline’s length, it means frequent morning fog, which keeps the temperature down to comfortable levels.

You will be fishing in the area of Henties bay which has many exciting fishing marks, within half an hour’s drive from your accommodation. Shipwrecks adorn this coastline, including some relatively recent ones, which make for some fantastic photographs. The cold current brings a mass of plankton, bringing the fish and other aquatic species.

How to catch Sharks

You will be fishing from the shore on long sandy beaches targeting the giant Bronze Whaler Sharks that live here; these fish can grow more than 400lb’s and, once hooked, will give you a fight you will never forget. Along with the massive Bronze Whaler sharks that inhabit this stretch of coastline, you will also be able to target some of the smaller species that live here on lighter tackle.

These include Spotted Gully Sharks, Smoothhounds, Eagle Rays, Sand Sharks, and Kabeljou. Rods are typically 14” one piece and fitted with large multipliers to hold plenty of lines. The baits for the bronze Whalers are big and bloody, and these are either cast out or flown out using a drone to distances above 250m.

Lighter setups get used for other species like the rays and Kabeljou. So if you are looking for your next full-on fishing adventure, then why not give this a go? It is one of if not the best shore-based Shark fishing experience in the world. Suppose you would like to see what Shark fishing in Namibia is like; head over to our YouTube channel and take a look for yourself.

All abilities are welcome as our guide is very used to accommodate all levels of experience. With no boat fishing, it’s an excellent destination for people who like to target big fish from the comfort of being on dry land. This holiday is not that physically challenging as you will drive down to the beach fishing marks in our 4X4, and then once the baits cast, it is a waiting game. Some of the fights can last a while, so being physically fit will help with fatigue.

Namibia Shark Fishing Guides

The Shark fishing guide we use in Namibia has been fishing these waters for many years. Being born in Belgium, a country known for great food and chocolate, Louis only has three major passions: hunt, fish, and food. After working for years in various Michelin-star rated restaurants, Louis decided to trade the hectic high-level cuisine for Namibia’s nature, where he got married to Anneke after two years. As a manager at Fisherman’s Guesthouse, Louis made his dream come true to do what he loves most as much as possible: cook, fish, and hunt. We have comfortable, four-wheel-drive vehicles used to drive onto the beaches, meaning we can carry everything needed for a day out. We also offer Hosted Namibia Shark fishing holidays; If you have any questions regarding our hosted tours, please feel free to get in touch.

Accommodation

Namibia needs no introduction to fishing for Bronze Whaler sharks from the shore. This beautiful country situated on the west coast of Africa is one place every sea angler has to visit. When staying in Namibia and fishing for the Bronze Whaler Sharks, you will want somewhere to rest your head, and the accommodation we have for you is superb. You will be staying at the Fishermans Lodge, located in Henties Bay on the Namibian Coastline.

Keith

Everything was exactly as described by Sportquest, the fisherman’s guesthouse at Henties Bay was excellent , our guide Louie and his wife Anneke were great hosts, we had some great fishing even though conditions on a couple of days were challenging Louie managed to put us amongst the fish. Catching a bronze whaler on a rod, off the beach is an experience I’ll never forget, the food at the guesthouse was excellent and a good time was had in the evenings with the other guests, all in all it was an excellent, good value holiday. Would definitely recommend it.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

From what i can make out the fishing in Namibia is still good. Simon Mcgowan does a great job keeping the dream alive for UK anglers and other anglers from around the world.

Ever since watching the John Wilson and Henry Gilbey TV programmes I've always wanted to go out there and give it a try for myself.

Job done

I'm just back from a week in Namibia and what a week it was! I landed two species of shark over 100lb including a Bronze Whaler and Seven Gilled Cow Shark plus a host of smaller species including Smoothound and Lesser Guitarfish. The lodge was perfect for what I needed and the guides were very accommodating and knowledgeable. A big thumbs up from me.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the fishing and Louis, our guide were both excellent, the guesthouse was excellent, food was great and a really enjoyable time was had most evenings with the other guests, the sea was against us for a couple of days which made fishing difficult but with Louis help we still managed to catch, we had five bronze whalers between us, great trip, would do it again in a heartbeat.

Matthew

Our fishing trip to Namibia was absolutely brilliant, from the first day to the last, our guide and host Louis had a vast knowledge of the coast line and fishing tactics to catch a wide verity of fish, Louis worked very hard to find the fish for us as some days were hard, but Louis came through ever time, if one place wasn't right he would move on until he found the right place with the right conditions to fish and this hard work payed off ever time.

My son Tom and I had a fantastic time, Tom hadn't done any fishing before going, but under Louis guidance he became a good fisherman over the time we were fishing landing Kob up to 18 kilos and on our last afternoon catching a massive 143 kilo 300 lbs Bronze whaler shark that took over two hours to land.

Our time at Fisherman's guest house was supper the accommodation food and the nights were all five star, and our hosts Anneke and Louis went out of there way to make our time with them as best as can be, from barbecues on the beach to fresh fish dinners, Thankyou for a fantastic time.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Matthew, thank you so much for your feedback it truly is an awesome place and Louis and Anneke really do look after you. So glad your son managed to catch such a huge fish, if you have any pictures you could send me that would be great. Now that he has the bug, where to next?

Brodie

Fantastic week in Namibia. I have been on over 11 different international fishing trips and travelled to over 20 different countries but this trip will forever go down as the best one!

Day 1:
We arrived at Walvis Bay international airport to be greeted by our guide and host Louis Fenaux, who was polite and friendly. The short 40 minute drive to the Fisherman’s Guesthouse was scenic with wildlife (Flamingos and Jackels) and desserts. After arriving at the accommodation we were greeted by Louis’s wife Anneke who was welcoming and kind. Anneke had a BBQ set up for us on the first night that was amazing and didn’t give us a reason to eat anywhere else other than the guesthouse. Louis also has a bar at the guesthouse with beer on tap and loads of other types of liquor.

Day 2:
Started with me and my dad waking up for breakfast at 08:00, which was a continental breakfast with bacon and eggs. The first days fishing was a bit of a species hunt, where we caught 5 different species (Spotted Gully shark, Barbell, Sand shark, Cob, Steenbras). This was amazing as it got us catching a few fish and gave us an idea for the week ahead. Lunch was also included and was a pack lunch including different native foods which are similar but slotley differ to the usual in the UK. The way Captain Louis read the water and could tell which fish would bite and feed in different coloured waves and tides was fascinating to witness.

Day 3:
Again day 3 started with a continental breakfast with bacon and eggs from Anneke and the team at the Guesthouse. The plan for today was to fish for Spottys (Spotted Gully sharks). Louis took me and my dad to a spot north of the guesthouse where we caught over 15 Spottys in 2 hours with multiple double and at some point triple takes. All the Spottys were around 10kg-15kg. After this we changed our efforts to the Bronze Whale sharks but we was unsuccessful due to the difficult water conditions we faced. However we did catch a very large Spotty of over 25kg which made up for the quietness in the action. Arriving back at the fisherman’s guesthouse we were greeted be Anneke who had cooked a fresh Cob we caught that same day, which is the first time we have eaten our own catch before. It was the best and most fresh fish we had ever eaten.

Day 4:
Start time for day 4 was again 08:00 with a continental breakfast made by Anneke. In the morning we fished for bait catching 4 good sized Cob up-to 3kg. We used this fresh bait to help catch our first Bronze Whale shark of the trip at over 50kg it was the hardest fighting fish we had ever witnessed or caught. Dinner for this evening was fresh lamb that Louis had brought and butchered int the guesthouse. The best lamb ribs we had ever tasted.

Day 5:
As usual the day started with a breakfast run by Anneke at 08:00. Day 5 was just one of those days. We caught 2 Cob early morning but other than that you couldn’t buy a bite. It wasn’t just us no one along the coast had reports of much fish coming out I don’t know if it was to do with the sea or the weather but it was what it was. Luckily Captain Louis knows a few secret spots where in the last 30 minutes he took us the ‘Bronzey Hole’ where we caught two big Spotty sharks both over 20kg in a short period of time to save the day. Back at the guesthouse we had the Cob caught from today fried with a bit of a risotto, cooked perfectly by Anneke.

Day 6:
Breakfast as usual started at 08:00 cooked and delivered by Anneke. In the morning we fished for bait catching nice Cob, Sand shark and I even managed to catch a bucket list fish a large Eagle Ray. Lunch like every fishing day was a local packed lunch Captain Louis would pick us up early morning. The afternoon on day 6 was a disaster. We lost 4 massive Bronze Whale sharks in 35 minutes it was heart breaking.
To make up for the bad luck whilst fishing Anneke had prepared the best dinner of the week, lamb legs from the lamb Louis butchered the day before. It was the best lamb we had ever eaten and the potatoes, vegetables and gravy sauce complimented it perfectly.

Day 7:
The last day and the goal was to catch a 200lb/90kg + Bronze whale shark. We started the morning catching bait which is easy with Louis who is a master of reading the water. Our first stop off for a Bronzey was a spot on the beach called ‘Popeye’ where our bad luck continued and we lost another fish heartbreaking. After this we moved to a location known as ‘Black Rock’ where we lost the 4 Bronzeys the day before. Instantly we hooked a fish that took line none stop even with a really tight clutch. Louis saw the fish jump and said it was massive but unfortunately after nearly spooling the reel and taking almost 1000m of line it came off. Ten minutes later we hooked another Bronze whale shark which we landed at 70kg changing our luck for the better. Last cast of the day the same rod and reel that caught all the Bronze whale sharks for the week ripped off again. This fish felt massive with help from our guide Louis we landed the fish in 1hr 30minutes and like a fairytale ending it was the fish we dreamt of, with it being over the magical 220lb/100kg barrier. This fish put the nail in the coffin and made our holiday to Namibia our best fishing trip to date!

Highlights:
The holiday ended with 7 different species spotted gulled sharks, Bronze whale sharks, Eagle rays, Sand sharks, Cob, Steenrass and Barbell. We caught 3 Bronze whale sharks from 50kg-100kg and lost 6. We lost count of Spotted gulled sharks but caught 3 over 20kg and 1 over 25kg. Another highlight was the large Eagle ray caught on day 6. We caught fish every day and enjoyed every minute of the holiday even when it got frustrating in the afternoon on day 6 Louis always found a way to cheer us up.

A big shoutout to Louis and Anneke Fenaux, who were the best hosts we have ever had the experience to meet and be alongside. Anneke was polite and caring, always asking about the fishing and if we needed anything throughout our stay. Louis is one of the best fisherman I have ever met and I would recommend him and the fisherman’s guesthouse in Namibia to every person interested in big shark fishing from the shore. He was confident throughout the week and helped us achieve all of our targets comfortably, it was as if he knew the trip would just fall into place.
Just make sure you are fighting fit as these Bronze whale sharks aren’t like Catfish from Spain or Sturgeon from Canada they are ridiculously hardcore!
