Tarpon Fly Fishing | Cuba | El Faro Lodge

Overview

Tour code: CUB030

Tarpon fishing Cuba has to be some of the best there is in the world, and El Faro Lodge on the western side of Cuba now gives you access to the previously unfished territory of this vast, unique area. El Faro’s unique location is on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and within its national park gives you exclusive access to its well-protected stunning saltwater fly fishing flats. This area has been preserved for 40 years and offers world-class fishing for many saltwater flats and offshore species which when you bring it all together produces a Cuban fly fishing paradise.

Location

You can find this stunning location on the western tip of the Caribbean island of Cuba. With its rugged wild and untouched coastline of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula is where you will find this exciting new El Faro Lodge. This unique little piece of secluded paradise has been built to keep every guest happy with single rooms as standard. Single rooms are a massive bonus for many people as having your small bit of alone time is sometimes needed after a hard day wading the flats. The lodge is built right next to an incredible national park that has been protected and preserved for over 40 years, and it has an immense biosphere. It is home to more than 200 miles of beaches, channels, coral reef, flats and fantastic Bluewater fishing options. For anglers who love to be surrounded in wildlife, you will be spoiled, as over one hundred seventy-two species of birds inhabit the area, and experts believe that four of the seven species of marine turtles living on the planet have survived in this magnificent area. With all these unique and unexplored opportunities, you find yourself a fly-anglers dream location which has remained unspoilt for many years.

Fishing

The real beauty of  Tarpon fishing Cuba at El Faro is it allows you to explore and make some history. Tarpon fishing Cuba is still very much in the exploration stages as guides and customers are still learning each season and exploring new areas to fish for certain species at certain times.

You will be primarily fishing for Bonefish, Tarpon and Snook, and you will also have chances to fish for Permit; however, we are still working on finding more areas to target these wary fish. When fly fishing either the deepwater channels or mangrove lagoons you will be fishing from our purpose designed skiffs, these boats allow anglers to comfortably and quickly get to the most productive water. When targeting other species on the saltwater flats, it is possible to fish on foot as you search for species such as Bonefish and Triggerfish.

Another benefit of Tarpon fishing Cuba at El faro is the option of a quick boat ride to the ocean side to target bluewater species. Here you will be fishing deep blue water providing opportunities for Sailfish, Wahoo and Tuna and when the weather permits, a trip out to the bluewater can offer even more to your El Faro experience. Trolled lures or fly fishing for Dorado is an excellent option in the open sea and it may even be possible to tease a Sailfish close enough in to tempt one to take a fly. The one real advantage of El Faro Lodge is that it has been created and run by our partners Untamed Angling, who are one of the most experienced and recognised fly fishing operators in the world. These are same fanatic anglers that discovered and run Tsimane, the Golden Dorado fishing destinations in Bolivia. With their years of working experience of setting up and running international lodges, you can feel confident that you are in expert hands. The management and staff will take care of all the logistics of the trip; all you have to do is fish as hard as you can and enjoy the experience.

Boats

Tarpon fishing Cuba is based on two anglers with one guide in perfectly designed skiffs that are very much like Dolphin skiffs. These boats are very comfortable for two anglers and just the right size to allow you and your guide to access the most productive areas quickly. Fishing is conducted either from fishing with skiffs, with anglers taking turns at the front of the boat, or along the southern region of the peninsula; there are rows and rows of ocean flats that can be easily walked and fished on foot.

Guiding

As you would expect we have sourced some top-level guides with many years’ experience, many who have grown up in this area as man and boy. As mentioned, fishing is based on two anglers to one skiff and one guide. Your guide will have a full cool box with cold refreshing drinks, and they will either provide you with a full shore lunch or if you prefer you can return you to the marina to enjoy your lunch with the comfort of air conditioning.

Other Activities

Many customers travelling to Tarpon fishing Cuba choose to plan extra time to see and experience this wonderful country and to meet the beautiful people who live and work there. There are some excellent options for tours in and around Havana, to the country at the Valle de Vinales to visit cigar-making factories and farms, or extended stays to some of the other historic cities. Please note As you will be staying in the Guanahacabibes Peninsula national park and marine reserve, which is a very underdeveloped area. Many non-fishing activities will be undertaken by yourself, such things as diving and snorkel are amazing around this part of the world, but there are currently no organised dives.

Questions & Answers

Where is the lodge?

You can find El Faro Lodge on the far western tip of the Caribbean island of Cuba on the Guanahavabibes Peninsula

Where will I fish?

During your stay, you will fish both the open wide saltwater flats and also around the lagoons and mangroves that provide the perfect shelter for baitfish and the target predators you will be fishing for. You can expect to primarily target Tarpon and Snook, and Bonefish. There is Permit in the area as well, although the numbers are not as prolific as other parts of Cuba. If you’re someone who wants to target Tarpon and Snook, however, then the peninsula is a solid option.  There are also opportunities for Barracuda, Triggerfish, Jacks and more.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The fishing area is vast so you can be fishing anywhere within 5 mins to over 1-hour boat ride away. There is so much water to explore and only a limit of customers we have each week so the fishing dies not to get pressured.

What species will I catch?

At El Faro Lodge we offer the customer the opportunities to fish for the following: Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Barracuda, Triggerfish, Jacks. For those customers who wish to travel off the reef, there is even the opportunity to fish for Sailfish, Wahoo & Tuna.

How will I fish?

Fishing will be based on 2 anglers per boat and guide, customers can access mangroves, channels, beaches and remote wilderness flats using the lodges small skiffs, which are very similar to Dolphin skiffs. These boats allow anglers to comfortably and quickly get to the most productive waters each day. The southern beaches of the peninsula are lined by a series of oceanside flats, where anglers can walk and wade in search of Bonefish and Permit.

Do the guides speak English?

Yes, they all speak English but please remember this is not their native language and although you will be able to make each other understand, do not expect deep meaningful conversations.

What skill level is required?

Saltwater fly fishing is best if you have an understanding of the basic casting skills. Do not worry about long casts it is far better to do short casts but in a more controlled manner, presenting the fly in the right place nice and gently. Do not worry about the rest the guides will soon show you the way and we all understand that we all have to learn and there is no better way than standing in the water.

How physically demanding is this trip?

The trip is not that demanding as there is not too much walking and if you get tired you can always continue to fish from the boat. The heat can be strong but if you just take your time, wear suitable clothing and hat, plus keep drinking lots of fluids you will be fine.

How will I get there?

There are several options on how to get there, however, the most common route is via Havana the capital of Cuba, then a 5.5-hour bus ride to El Faro Lodge.

What is the accommodation like?

El Faro Lodge is an established, beachfront fishing lodge located on the far western tip of Cuba. The hotel is spacious and comfortable, and each angler always has its own private, single occupancy rooms: spacious wooden cabins with private bathrooms.

What is the food like?

Untamed Angling has always prided itself on great food, and El Faro will have a full-time chef that they have brought in throughout the fishing season. Breakfasts are cooked to order each morning, and lunches are packed for a full day on the water or served back at the lodge for those that want to take a mid-day break and relax between long morning and evening sessions. Dinners each evening are a combination of seafood, meat dishes, salads, soups and fresh vegetables. The bar is well-stocked with Cuban beer, excellent Cuban rum, and a basic selection of other liquors.

Does the lodge provide fishing tackle?

The lodge does not provide any fishing tackle so please make sure you bring everything you need. I not sure talk to our offices on 01603 407596 as they can talk you through everything you will need.

Is internet and phone signal available?

At the present time, there is no Wi-Fi service at El Faro Lodge, although there are plans to add coverage in the near future. The marina area (located a short five-minute drive from the hotel) does offer wi-fi, you can access the Wi-Fi internet using a pre-paid card, which is available all throughout Cuba.

Are there other activities available?

The Guanahacabibes Peninsula is a massive national park and marine reserve, with very little infrastructure and zero development aside from the hotel, the marina, and the nearby Roncardi lighthouse complex. The area is a nature-lovers paradise, with wildlife (including a massive number of wild pigs!) and fantastic birdlife. Non-anglers can relax on the beach, dive or snorkel. It is important to note, however, that this is a very remote, undeveloped and quiet part of Cuba.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel arrangements we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.
