Wahoo Fishing | Big Game Fishing | Madeira

Overview

Tour code: MAD002

The Wahoo season in Madeira is by far the best in Europe and if you have not yet hooked a Wahoo, then you are in for a treat, as these fish are simply known as the ‘Cheetah’s of the Sea’. The season is very short and runs from September to December, so spaces fill fast, as these specimens are fast becoming a very popular fish. As the Marlin Season winds down, people turn their minds to the Wahoo with great reason. The Wahoo is one of the fastest species in any seas and, once you have felt the sheer power of these beasts on stand up light gear, you will be hooked. You will fish with one of our best captains, who have been fishing these Madeira coastal waters for many years. Each day you will get to experience 8 hours of fishing. Methods used normally involve 20 to 30lb class rods and multipliers, trolling Rapala’s at high speed.

Location

Madeira is an archipelago of 4 islands that are a region of Portugal. Located 250 miles north of Tenerife and  540 miles from the western coast of Portugal these 4 islands are of volcanic origin and are extremely popular with both tourists and anglers alike. You will be staying in the beautiful town of Funchal where, when, not fishing, you will be able to explore this stunning location and take in the sights and sounds of this culturally enriched volcanic landscape.

Fishing

Takes are intense; so do not be caught sleeping. These fish are nicknamed the Cheetahs of the sea, due to their amazing turn of speed, if they turn and run towards you, it is difficult to reel fast enough to keep the line tight. You will also find the best Mid-Atlantic big game fishing crew and equipment to be found anywhere in Madeira, this destination is ideal for those anglers who are short of time. Our boat is fully equipped for all sport fishing requirements and ready for you to cruise the bountiful waters of Madeira.
Regardless if you are a complete beginner or an expert, Wahoo fishing is for everyone. These beautiful islands are an anglers paradise with stunning beaches and volcanic rock formations to fish off from the shore which gives way to deep offshore marks which hold some of the biggest fish in the ocean the fast running and hard-hitting Wahoo. You will leave the harbour early morning and make your way out to the chosen area you will be fishing, your skipper will slow the boat down and then the deckhands will go to work. They will rig teasers up which will be towed behind the boat, these will draw the fish up from the depths and entice them to smash the lures that will be being trolled behind the boat.

Guides

You will be fishing with one of the best big game boats in Madeira, the skipper is very well seasoned when it comes to fishing these waters and the deckhands you will find on the boat are some of the best you will find on any big game boat.

Therefore, if you are looking for a quick winter break with something different, this holiday is ideal for you.

If you have any questions on the big game fishing holidays we offer then contact us in the office, our experienced team will be happy to help you with any queries you have. Additionally, you can request a free brochure.

Itinerary

The below itinerary is only a suggested one, as we have daily flights departing from the UK, therefore should you wish to extend your stay with either more fishing days or free days, the itinerary below can be tailored to suit.

Day 1:

Depart UK (alternative routes available)
Arrive Funchal.

On arrival, a representative from the hotel will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall.

You will then be transferred by private car to Casa Velha do Palheiro.

Once you have checked in and unpacked, the rest of the day is free for you to either relax or explore. There are some great little shops nearby and if you choose to walk make sure you take your hiking boots as the Island of Madeira is very hilly. Alternatively, you can ask at reception to book a taxi who will then take you straight into town.

Overnight accommodation: Casa Velha do Palheiro (Twin room) B/B

Day 2: Fishing Day

After breakfast, you will be transferred down to Funchal Marina, where your boat captain and crew will be waiting to take you for full days Big game fishing.

The boat and skipper are yours solely as we do not party share the boat with other anglers, it is just whoever is in your party. As the holiday you have booked is based around the Wahoo season then there may not be many other species available. Your skipper will inform you if there has been any Tuna around and may ask you if you wish to try for them but remember it is your boat and you get to choose the species available.

After a full day fishing, you will be transferred from the marina back to your accommodation.

Overnight accommodation: Casa Velha do Palheiro (Twin room) B/B

Day 3: Fishing Day

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to the marina, where you will be met by the boat, Captain and crew for another days fishing.

The guides we use have been fishing these waters for many years and have been hand-picked.

We use all of the best top of the range equipment to target Wahoo, as these do not take any prisoners.

Overnight accommodation: Casa Velha do Palheiro (Twin room) B/B

Day 4:

After checking out, a representative from the hotel will transfer you back to Funchal airport

Depart Funchal
Arrive UK

Questions & Answers

Where is the destination?

Wahoo fishing Madeira is located on the archipelago of Portuguese Islands that are found 250 miles north of Tenerife.

Where will I fish?

You will be fishing in the waters surrounding Madeira, these turbulent Atlantic waters are the perfect place to find monster Wahoo.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

The fishing starts as close as 2 miles out so there is no time wasted motoring out to the grounds. The deep drop off where the Wahoo cruise is only short steam from the harbour if there are known shoals of Tuna that are feeding then somedays you may be travelling up to an hour to reach them.

What fish will I catch?

This holiday is predominantly a Wahoo fishing holiday where you will be trolling for some of the monster Wahoo that inhabits these waters. Along with the Wahoo you maybe be given the option to fish the many reefs where you will also catch many different types of snappers plus the very hard fighting Amber Jacks which grow to a very good size. At certain times of year Tuna and Marlin can also be caught here.

How many fish will I catch?

When you are targeting the Wahoo they tend to shoal up so if and when you find them your chances of landing a few is fairly high. The skipper is in touch with lots of the commercial anglers so chances are fairly high.

How will I fish?

On your offshore fishing days, the boats will head off to the steep drop-offs where the predator’s patrol. You will be mainly trolling artificial lures and teasers, the Wahoo are super fast so a faster trolling speed is the order of the day here, the Rapalas will work at certain depths from sub surface to deeper diving.

Do the guides speak English?

All the captains and deckhands speak good English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This destination is perfect for those who wish to try and catch a hard fighting Wahoo. You certainly do not need to be an expert big game angler as the deck hands will take great care of you.

What skill level is required?

This destination suits anglers of all abilities from first time big game anglers to the most experienced.

How physically demanding is this trip?

If you choose to troll then it’s not that physical because when you hook a fish you can sit in the fighting chair and let the boat do the work or you can stand toe to toe with the fish and battle it out.

When is the best time to go?

The season is from the end of August to December with October and November the best two months as this is when the big Wahoo run. Whenever you decide to travel then we highly recommend looking at a moon phase calendar. We would recommend the time leading up to a ‘new moon’ as the predators will feed more during the day than the night.

How do I get there?

We normally fly people direct from the UK. You will be met by our representative who will transfer you the short journey to your hotel.

What is the accommodation like?

The Casa Velha del Palheiro is a beautiful hotel located in the foothills of Funchal. The hotel has been lovingly restored from an 18th-century hunting lodge and is now fully integrated into the 120 hectares Palheiro Nature Estate with its own par 72 championship golf course, a fully-serviced spa with indoor and outdoor pools, and over 20 kilometres of nature trails, birdwatching, restaurants, bars and even a tea house.

What is the food like?

The food at Casa Velha del Palheiro is very good, fresh and produced from local products. If there is something you fancy that isn’t on the menu then simply ask as the chefs and staff will try their hardest to make it happen.

Does the hotel provide fishing tackle?

The tackle that is provided when out on the boats is of a very good standard.

Is internet and phone signal available?

Phone signal is available and the Wifi at the resort is free.

Are there other activities available?

Yes, they can organise a days golfing on the onsite range, there is a spa treatment area, gym and several tennis courts. There is also a swimming pool.

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel arrangements we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.

John

The Hotel was fantastic and we were upgraded to a Suite!

The fishing was the main reason for the trip and again a brilliant 2 days with 4 Wahoo caught!

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi John, thats a great touch I bet the suite was lovely. The normal rooms are of a very good standard so would of loved to have seen what the suites looked like.

I did hear you were catching some Wahoo as the skipper kept in touch and it looks like you had some great sport.

Where to next then John?

All the best

Resort Manager

Thanks for your great feedback….the wahoo season has been intense and we even had one of our guests saying that they had seen some 10 wahoos free jumping and feeding around the boat. We hope you will come back and maybe try and catch one of Madeira’s legendary big Blue Marlins…..

Cheers,

Jonathan

Andrew

Beautiful island. Restaurants, bars and accommodation great, but we blanked at the fishing.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Andrew, such a shame you guys didnt manage any Wahoo, there were a lot around but guess thats fishing sometimes. Anyway, glad you guys still enjoyed it. Speak soon

Hotel was better than expected although a brochure/leaflet about it before travel would be excellent.

Food + drinks good + despite being 5 star was good value.

Voucher for meal a little confusing as I thought the evening meal when fishing was included, so was the voucher extra or that meal?

Easy Jet flights cramped as seats have no leg room.

Travel wallet gift nice but not needed - a fishing T-shirt would have been better.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Sally

Thank you so much for the feedback and also your great comments. We do not have separate leaflets for the accommodation, however in future we could direct booked customers to the accommodations own website which has lots more details.

In relation to the meal voucher, sorry if that confused you both as the evening meal is just a complementary meal on the first nights fishing, so i will look at that and try to make this clearer to customers.

Yes Easyjet flights are cramped, we do have better airlines but it does increase the price considerably plus tend to be indirect flights via Portugal.

We are looking at expanding the free gifts as we have lots of customers who travel with us again and again so keep sending them the same free gift is pointless. So what this space.

I have sent you a private e-mail with a link so you can upload all the holiday pictures to us.

Again a huge thank you for your comments and custom which is very much appreciated, we can not do what we do with out customers.

Regards Peter

Sportquest did a great job of organising everything for our recent trip to Madeira for Wahoo fishing, unfortunately no Wahoo to be found but plenty Barracuda, Pargo, Bluefish

Regarding the organisational part of the trip, it was done very well, id had to change dates after booking and sport-quest did everything for me no hassle.

Hotel was excellent - 5 star, fishing charter excellent, transfers were seamless (surprised but very pleased about this)

Overall the trip was 5 star - Thanks!

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Thanks for your feedback.

Madeira is one of those places that either produces excellent results or doesn't. Shame it was the latter, but thats fishing. So glad you guys still managed have a good time and i will pass your very kind comments on the hotel

I will call you later this week

The flight was on time and comfortable in both directions. The hotel was perfect and situated in a beautiful spot and the room was excellent. The breakfast was good and the packed lunch every day was well presented and tasty. We ate at the restaurant on the first evening, but found that neaveau quisine was not to our taste and somewhat expensive, a bottle of local wine was 37 euros, but we were recommended to a small restaurant in the hills a ten minute taxi ride away that was brilliant, Serving mainly steaks of various kinds a meal for two which included a starter a beer bottle of wine and a steak the size of a plate was 34 euros all in, so we went there three nights on the trot.

We had booked for four days fishing but the weather turned and we could not leave the harbour, nothing you or I can do about that, so we only had two days fishing. However when we went out the first day, my colleague pointed out to the guide that we seemed to be using very heavy tackle for catching wahoo. The guide said that we were going after some tuna. We kept on about it and at mid day he put out some more rods because we had booked a wahoo fishing holiday. The second day was the same with the emphasis on Tuna, until we asked him to put out some lighter tackle. H e didn't say there were no wahoo about, just that they are usually found in shallower water, which beggared the question, Shall we go to shallow water then.

So there may be some confusion there that may need to be addressed. I must say though, that the skipper and crew were really nice blokes and very friendly and the boat was state of the art.I hope this is of some use to you

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello, thanks for taking the time to give us a great report.

The hotel we use over there is great, we always get a glowing report. The staff are some of the friendliest people you will meet and nothing is to much. What a great tip about the restaurant perhaps we will mention it to future travellers and all that lovely food for only 34 euros total!!

What a shame about the weather, every where in Europe seems to be suffering at the moment with rain etc.

After speaking to Ray on the phone yesterday i spoke to the fishing manager and he could not work out why this had happened. He said he will speak to the skipper of the boat. the only thing he could think of was that the tides were not great for Wahoo and they only fished for them when it was peak time in each tide as to not waste your time and instead of trolling around for Wahoo knowing they were not going to catch one they decided to have a go for the Tuna which were feeding so you guys had a chance of actually catching something. I am still waiting to hear from the fishing manager and i will call Ray as soon as i do.

As for the boat, it is an excellent boat in fact the best on the island and i agree with you that the skipper and crew are excellent

Once again thank you and speak with you guys soon

All the best

GEORGE

Hotel was as described luxury venue staff in hotel excellent, we arrived on a celebration weekend for the hotel group with 2 gala meals at night, unfortunately we were not told that the light bar menu was not available but eventually things were sorted out (we only needed the light menu because the picnic lunch was excellent)

Now to the fishing on arrival we were told the hotel boat was not available ,awaiting spare part for engine. The target species was wahoo, on boarding the fishing boat we saw that we were rigged up with big game rods and muppet lures, not the lighter tackle and rapala lures as expected.

Day 1, one fish 30/33kg. We pointed out to the crew the tackle/methods that we were expecting to be using. Next day same tackle setup chasing tuna that whale watchers had seen previous day no signs of tuna no wahoo. Last day light rods rapalas and muppets , I would have preffered to return to area we caught on day 1, no we went west no fish. 6rods 2days 6.5hrs + 4rods 1 day 6.5hrs=104 rod hours not the best conversion ratio.

I understand wahoo area a small shoal species and you must cover a lot of water to find them, the fish came from a known area the other two days were wasted.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi George

So sorry for our boat not being in service when you arrived. The spare part for the boat just before your trip was delivered incorrectly hence the minor boat repairs could not be completed.

Also the local boat and crew that was supplied in place of did not grasp that you both wished to fish for Wahoo and not Tuna.

I am glad that you excepted our gesture of goodwill to rectify the situation and as discussed look forward in booking you some more trips again in the near futures.

Kind Regards Peter

John

The hotel was lovely in every way.

The staff and food were great and the weather was just perfect. Although the hotel is a 15 minute trip from downtown Funchal, the hotel has it's own courtesy bus which makes life easy.

Although we are seasoned travellers we can't think that we have had better service from hotel staff anywhere.

The fishing was good with my friend Colin catching an 80lb white marlin and I caught a 300lb blue marlin.

All in all a fantastic trip.

Also thank you for the pictures as its always nice to see customers catches.

Look forward in assisting you both again soon to some amazing adventures.

Penelope

Madeira was brillliant. The organisation by SportsQuest was perfect, we were picked up from the airport (despite the flight being 5 hours late) and spent the next 10 days at the Casa Velha do Palheiro. Fabulous plantantion style spa hotel with truly friendly and helpful staff, not to mention an excellent restaurant and beautiful gardens.

We didn't play golf, but the course looked lovely and the views across the ocean were stunning. We however, had gone to fish and the hotel boat - the Balancal - did not let us down. Good crew that made the most of the days, varying the fishing location and ensuring we spent as much time actively fishing as was possible. The three of us caught white Marlin as well as other more edible fish but also saw whales, dolphins, turtles and flying fish all right around the boat.

We were advised that hiriing a car and driving on the island as a tourist was stressful and that taxis were very cheap. Actually we thought they were rather expensive a trip from the hotel into nearby Funchal was Euros 20 one way. We therefore missed the opportunity to explore properly.
I also wish we had done more planning around walking as you really need a guide for some of the more interesing lavadas (we were advised that some of the high ones are dangerous and should not be done unaccompanied). All in all loved it and would go again in a heart beat.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Penelope

Many thanks for sending us your feedback it is highly important for future travellers. Glad to see you and your family had such a great time and would consider going back. That is all we like to hear that someone enjoys a place so much that they would re visit.

I am sorry to hear the taxi's were so expensive and we will make sure that we inform further travellers that this is the case and hiring a car maybe the way forward

The crew and boat at the hotel are awesome and very good at their jobs. What a great result on the fishing front, it is so good to see so many bill fish coming out, they must be doing something right

Look forward to helping you guys again at a later date

Kind Regards

Paul

Mark

Thanks for helping us put this trip together. Had a great time apart from no fish. The weather was a bit windy but still both of us had a great time. Hotel was very nice all in all a very pleasant stay

Hi Mark, it was good to talk with you today and such a shame that you didnt catch but like you said, "thats fishing"

Glad the hotel was up to your standards

If you are looking for a short winter break then i would highly recommend Madeira. It was on average 18degrees lovely and quiet and the fishing was apparently good.

My husbands decided to have two days fishing leaving me to shop and sit around the pool, i loved it so many thanks for organising the whole thing

Brian

Hello Peter, after talking to you we checked on the internet about the fishing in Madeira in October and we were a little concerned about the lack of any other species. Boy we were glad we listened to you about how good the Wahoo fishing is and hard the fight. Cheetahs of the sea is about right. I also thought the skipper was trolling way to fast but once i saw one of these hit our lures then i realised

Best trip yet

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Brian, i am glad you took on board what i said. i know there are not a lot of other fish species there but when you hook one of the Wahoo you don't want to catch anything else.

Well done on your catches can not wait to see the pictures

Kind Regards

Peter

Gary

Worst fishing holiday we have had with you. The hotel was good but the fishing was not.
The boat crew didn't seem to work very hard didn't really offer us any other fishing just kept trolling for the Wahoo

Perhaps you should get them to offer other bottom fishing trips

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Gary

i am ever so sorry you didnt manage to catch anything and feel the way you do, but at this time of year there are not many other species to target. The Wahoo are there in numbers in the winter and that is what attracts lots of people. Some times fishing just doesn't go the way we want and i will mention it to the skipper of the boat that if the Wahoo fishing isn't very good then ask the clients if they want to try for something else

Hope this hasn't put you off using our services again and we will contact you soon to see if we can be of any more help to you and your group

Valerie

Hello Mel, thank you for putting this late trip together for us Madeira was fab and will defiantly return maybe for longer next time. Pat said thanks also for the fishing was better than he had thought

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Valerie, you are more than welcome. Yes maybe also go in the summer time then Pat could go for the Marlin

Robert

The fishing was very hard and the wahoo were just not about. Skipper and crew did all they could to try and put us on the fish. I was lucky enough to catch one of the few fish we had, a cracking 32kilo fish !

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Robert, thanks for the feedback, it was a strange week with only a few Wahoo, but these things sometimes happen (Not to often thankfully) Glad you still had a great time and congratulations on the 70lb Wahoo. Regards Peter
