The first of the two shooting premises is situated along the coast nearby to Bjärred, close to the Barsebäck Estate, a 19th century Dutch Renaissance-style castle. The second is found just outside the city of Landskrona. With only a 40 kilometre drive between the two area’s, it’s very well connected and easy to shoot over both on the same day. The guide, Kristofer Hansson and his team have over ten years of experience and offer a top-class guiding service. They’re highly knowledgeable on Duck and Goose shooting in Sweden, as well as the array of hunting areas, landscapes, calls and creating pits, lay blinds, and natural concealment; he and his team are some of the most respected guides found in Sweden.

If you are passionate about your wildfowling and yearn for the best experience possible, then look no further. Enjoy three days of fantastic big bag Goose shooting with two afternoons of quality Duck flighting mixed in.

The Best Duck & Goose Shooting In Europe

Sweden is renowned for its high volume shoots, unlimited bag days and the variety of species on offer, and it’s these three things that attract travelling guns back year after year.

Goose are one of the most famous quarries, and Sweden is one of those rare destinations that offer the hunter the chance to target three different species. Barnacle, Greylag, and Canada Geese all populate the shooting grounds and provide the opportunity for a genuine mixed bag. Around December time, when temperatures plummet, they migrate from the arctic to the commercial winter crops that span Sweden’s rolling terrain. Here birds find endless high-calorie food sources such as sugar beets, corn, carrots, winter wheat and canola, which provide the perfect conditions for fattening. The vast expanses of untouched wilderness also provide some ideal roosting conditions.

Along with Geese, there’ll also be the chance to target Ducks, and an afternoons Duck shooting can be fast and furious. Travelling guns will have the opportunity to target mainly Mallards and Teal, but there’s always the chance of a few surprises along the way.

As well as the species on offer, the reality of shooting high numbers of birds and shells is something that draws keen hunters from all around the globe. The birds have no bag limit, and each year in Sweden, hunting days of over 200 birds aren’t uncommon, and while there are no guarantees, expectations for 20-40 birds per hunter daily are reasonable.

The majority of the Goose hunting occurs over harvested fields, grass fields, and fields where winter crops get planted. The shooting gets set up over patterned decoys, and you’ll either be laying in layblinds or hides in hedges, waiting for the birds to fly over. The Duck shooting usually commences on the edges of lakes and ponds as the flighting birds pass over at dusk.

A TYPICAL DAYS SHOOTING

Goose shooting in Sweden is usually a morning affair, and you’ll be at your designated hunt area around an hour and fifteen minutes before sunrise, where you’ll meet your guide, Kristofer. He and his team will arrange the decoys and blinds and also take this time to explain how they work and what to expect during your day’s hunting. They will also supply you with all your cartridges for the day, situated in your blind, with enough to see you through a busy mornings shoot.

As the birds start visiting and the shoot commences, Kristofer and his team will usually hide a few hundred metres away from the action. However, they’re always on hand to immediately pick up any Geese as and when they fall, ensuring that any new flocks won’t be scared away. At approximately 11:00am, the days shooting will come to an end, as the birds will stop their morning flyover. Any birds that have been shot get gathered and take place in a small parade as a mark of respect and allow you to take a few pictures if you wish.

After the morning’s hunt, you will retreat to the B&B or somewhere local for lunch before returning mid-afternoon for the afternoon’s Duck flight. The birds fly over from the ocean to feed on the Estates ponds, and in an afternoon, you can expect at least a couple of drives. If the birds are plentiful, then there’ll be the option to nestle into a hide and stay on for the 6.00 pm dusk flight; this is a challenging yet fun combination of wildfowling and will test your skills and hiding capabilities.

The Best Guides In Sweden

The mixed Goose and Duck shooting in Sweden is guided by Kristofer Hansson and his team, who are undoubtedly some of the most respected and best guides in Sweden. Kristofer, who was born on a farm, began Goose shooting at a very early age. By the age of eighteen, his reputation was already growing outside of his farm. In 2004 he took over the Goose hunting on the famous estate of Barsebäck, and as they say, the rest is history.

Despite being fully guided and well looked after, the shooting and hunting at this destination aren’t for the faint-hearted, and you do need a relatively high level of fitness and shooting ability. The shooting in Sweden involves being quite physical, and on many occasions, you’ll be lying down in your blind to make for the best form of camouflage and then spring up quickly to take your shot as soon as the birds start to pass.

You will need to understand how to load and operate a Semi-Automatic shotgun should you choose not to take your own and a decent understanding of identifying your quarry. An ability to sustain long hours sitting or lying in your blind in all weathers is also essential. With the seasons running between August and October and January and February, the weather and conditions in the late winter months can be cold, and it’s common to experience snow and ice regularly.

Our host and guide Kristofer was worth the trip alone, a very knowledgeable man with a fantastic sense of humour. The shooting was A1 and each day, shooting over a variety of different terrain, we enjoyed some superb sport for both Ducks and Geese.

Over the last few years, I've done a fair bit of shooting in the UK, but nothing could prepare me for how different and how good Sweden was going to be - the Skane region is literally alive with wildfowl!
