Stora Sundby Castle

The stunning ex renaissance Castle originally built in the 13th century was abandoned, rebuilt and completed in the middle of the 16th Century belonging to the mighty Sparre family who would own it for more than 3 Centuries. It was then purchased by Count Carl de Geer who’s wife was inspired by Sir Walter Scotts novel about Ivanhoe the noble knight and so requested for a romantic knights castle.

So the geo-gothic, complete with pinnacles came so it came to pass that the old renaissance castle was lovingly transformed into a magnificent fairy-tale castle in Norman style. In 1848 Swedens most beautiful castle was completed and now boasted with 4 large towers symbolising the seasons, 12 smaller turrets for the months, 52 rooms for the weeks of the year and 365 windows for the calendar days. The majority of the old walls and interiors were preserved with the main focus instead on cladding the old castle in the new armour.

The Castle

The castle offers 15 magnificent guest rooms both double and twin rooms with original interiors and features from the 19th Century with views to the resplendent and naturally beautiful parkland of the estate which in turn gives you a sense of pure luxury and relaxation.

Stora Sundby remains an inhabited castle to this day and is home to the Klingspor family who have owned the estate since 1888. Today Stora Sundby is the home of Mauritz and Ida-Sofia Klingspor whom have worked hard with great sensitivity to the history of the castle as large parts of the building have been adapted to meet today’s standards of comfort. The jaw-dropping grandeur and presence of the bedrooms have largely been preserved although modern bathrooms have been incorporated discreetly. They have worked hard to create a welcoming atmosphere which is much appreciated by its visitors.

The estate has a huge responsibility for the preservation of both its cultural and historical assets and just as importantly its nature, conservation and gamekeeping to promote a richly diversified flora and fauna. Both hunters and non-hunters can appreciate the efforts of the estate owners by enjoying long walks around the estate and taking in the history.

Stora Sundby comprises of 3,700 hectares in total which 3000 are made up of forests, 450 for arable land and the remaining is parkland and ponds. There is also 1,450 hectares of water in lake Hjälmaren that are professionally fished.

Food and Drink

You will experience the most exquisite of culinary delights which will provided by local caterers who come into the Castle. Lunches are provided by Dufweholm mansion and dinners are with Julita Herrgård owned and operated by Tommy Myllymäki one of Swedens most well known and celebrated chefs. There is something for everyone and dietary requirements are catered for within the vast array of freshly prepared food. Whether you are shooting or not the catering will be for everyone. So you will certainly be making fond memories of your trip to Stora Sundby with all the luxurious treats and hospitality.

Other Activities

The estate is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from the airport and 30km from the city of Eskilstuna where there are restaurants, ATM’s, and shops. Which will be of interest to non-hunters should they wish to venture a little further from the Castle.
