Yellowfin Tuna Fishing | Cape Town | South Africa

Tour code: CAP001

We are incredibly pleased to offer one of the most exceptional fishing trips Cape Town has to offer. Team this up with the best boats and tackle available and you will soon find yourself being hooked up to one of the hardest and dirtiest fighting Tuna that swims our oceans. If you have never hooked a Yellowfin Tuna, let us tell you that you are going to be in for a great experience as these fish do not give up. Most of the fight will be deep down, putting a considerable amount of strain on your back. This may sound painful, but once you have landed your prize, the overwhelming sense of achievement will outweigh the back-breaking fight that these Tuna put upon rod and reel. Along with our fleet of boats and very experienced skippers, your days fishing will be the best it can be as these skippers know their waters and know when and where to fish.

This destination is in South Africa near to the large city of Cape Town. Leaving the harbour of Hout Bay, you will venture out into nutrient-rich areas of water where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans collide creating some turbulent but fish-filled seas. This, in turn, attracts the many predatory fish that roam these waters and attract the anglers that visit here year after year. The fishing grounds vary each day, and our skippers are always in touch with the commercial anglers. Getting up to date information on where the shoals of Tuna are. Make sure to visit our YouTube Channel and see why so many of our customers rave about our fishing trips to Cape Town.

The waters around Cape Town are rich in marine life. They give its visitors some of the best opportunities to catch huge Yellowfin Tuna, Longfin Tuna, and Yellowtail. The fishing styles on offer are popper fishing, jigging, plugging and trolling. As you can see, this will suit many different anglers. Why not try something very different and target these supercharged fish on the fly. We are sure that our skippers will pull out all the stops to make your dreams come true. To go with the fantastic fishing on offer, we have got a boat that will suit all anglers and all angler’s budgets. We have five fish-catching machines on offer all skippered by very experienced crews.

The smallest boat we have is the 28ft Magnum Walkaround which is powered by two 225 Yamaha 4 stroke engines, an onboard toilet cabin and is capable of taking four anglers. Our second boat and most popular is the 32ft Magnum Closed Cabin boat powered by two 300 Yamaha 4 stroke engines, onboard toilet cabin and is capable of taking six anglers. The third boat is another prevalent choice, a 32ft Magnum. However, this time it is a walkaround boat powered by two 250 Yamaha 4 stroke engines. The boat also has onboard toilet cabins and is capable of taking six anglers.

Our fourth boat offers a little more luxury and room in the form of the 37ft full cabin walkaround Bill Edwards Sportfisher powered by Scania engine and comes with onboard toilet cabin and benefits from a small kitchen area. This boat is capable of taking six anglers and is the preferred option for days out in the ocean. If you are looking for luxury then our fifth boat, the stylish 55ft Princess is for you. It is pushed along by two Volvo 480hp engines, two onboard toilet cabins, kitchen room, and Shower cubicle, main bedroom with en-suite, separate bathroom and four single beds. It is capable of taking 12 anglers out on one of the best days out on the ocean.

The five skippers in charge of the boats know these waters like the back of their hands. Fishing these waters since childhood, these skippers will know where and when to fish. What tackle to fish with, and most importantly when to set the hook. They all speak perfect English and will be more than happy to assist you in any way you may need help. Another reason fishing trips to Cape Town are always so good. Their knowledge is excellent. The fishing guides are there to pass on their expertise to whoever fishes with them. By the end of your days fishing, you will feel part of the team.

Questions & Answers

This destination is located in South Africa near to Cape Town, you will be based around Hout Bay which is a renowned fishing area in South Africa and is very close to many non-fishing activities. These can be booked with the receptionist at the hotel

You will be fishing the turbulent waters around the tip of South Africa, this is where both the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet creating some extremely nutrient-rich water. The ocean in this area is not very often calm so having good sea legs is a must.

The fishing grounds can vary in distance, some may be as close as half an hour but depending on where the fish are you may have to travel further.

You will mainly be targeting the very fast and hard fighting Yellowfin Tuna however as you are fishing in the open ocean you never know what could take your bait.

When the Tuna are running in numbers you can have some very fast and frantic action with many fish being caught. On an average day, you should expect to catch 1 Yellowfin Tuna per person per day but when there are lots of Tuna around you could see as many as 3 or 4 per person.

You could be mainly trolling artificial lures and teasers, these attract the Tuna in close and they will then start to strike out at the lures that are being trolled behind the boat. Another method you could possibly experience is using fish baits, these will be trolled behind the boat on outriggers,  then once you have located the feeding fish the action should be pretty exciting and constant.

All the captains and deckhands speak perfect English.

This destination is perfect for those who like a lot of action as the Sea off Cape Town is a prolific fishery. You certainly do not need to be an expert big game angler as the deckhands will take great care of you. On the other hand, if you are an experienced big-game angler you will also have lots of fun as the action can be fairly hectic on occasions when the Tuna are running.

This destination suits anglers of all abilities from first time big game anglers to the most experienced.

You have to be fairly fit for this style of fishing. As most of the fishing is done standing it does tend to cause a little lower back pain as these Tuna fight hard and some fights can last over an hour. We have full stand up and fight belts on all the boats which will of course help with some of the pressures of the fight.

The Yellowfin Tuna run is from September through until June with many other species turning up as well from October. The peak months would have to be December and January though.

We will fly you from the UK into cape Town international airport where you will then be picked up and transported to your accommodation.

This stunning and charming hotel dating from the 19th century is located at the foot of the world-famous Chapmans Peak Drive right in the heart of the picturesque village of Hout Bay. This charming hotel is only a short 20-minute drive from Cape Town city centre and 45 minutes from the airport.

Breakfast is included but your main meals are not so you can visit one of the many bars and restaurants in the local area which serve meals such as steaks, burgers and pasta and you must try some of the seafood that Hout bay is so very famous for.

The tackle that is provided when out on the boats is of a good standard. If you fancy a little popper or jig fishing then we would recommend you taking your own equipment as they tend to concentrate more on trolling equipment.

Phone signal is available and the Wifi at the resort is free.

Yes, there are other activities to do here including shark diving. There is also a very extensive list of tourist attractions which can all be booked at the reception of the hotel.

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view all prices and availability click the “Dates & Prices” tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange all your own travel we can book just the lodge and fishing for you.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hello Glenn, thanks for your feedback I will pass it on to the skippers. Please remember to send me the pictures when you get time

All the best Paul

Very good set up, boats, staff. Main problem is wind, you would easily get there and find it unfishable.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi John, thank you for your feedback form and looks like you managed to catch a few good Yellowfin. Yes this part of the world does suffer from winds throughout the year. Hopefully you and Selina enjoyed the hotel

All the best

The whole holiday / fishing experience was excellent!

The boat skipper (James) and his crew were great. Caught several big Yellowfins (95 kg, 91 kg, 90 kg + 88 kg)

Waterproof bib and brace and boots with a good tread would combat the water.

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Michael, thank you so much for the great feedback, I will pass it on to the guys in South Africa.

I have now added the bib and brace with a good pair of boats in to the pre trip information and thanks for speaking with me on your return

All the best

This is the ultimate deepwater trip.

Nothing pulls pound for pound like Yellowfin!

We had several triple hook - ups and all landed fish up to 190 lbs.

Hotel is great, 5 mins from boat, huge rooms + great food (cheap). Best boat + skipper you'll ever get.

Thought Guatemala was unbeatable, I was wrong!

Reply from Sportquest Holidays

Hi Alan, sounds like you guys had a great trip and they looked after you guys very well. Love the pictures

Where next for you guys?

Looking forward to have a catch up

All the best
