Turneffe Flats Customers Having A Great Time
Turneffe Flats Customers Having A Great Time and the week was characterized by warm, sunny days. The prevailing breeze from the East helped keep the temperatures comfortable and did not affect the fly-fishing. Clear skies and good visibility made it worthwhile targeting permit on the flats. The migratory tarpon are arriving and numerous poons in the 80-120-pound range were seen rolling. The flats fishing was exceptional for bonefish with some nice ones landed by all the anglers.
Greg S. and John T. teamed up with guide Daniel. Greg and John spent their week fishing for permit and had great success, landing five permit between them. This was the first time fishing permit for both. Greg and John also lost a few fish and this just made them hungry for more. Both guys also took some time during the day to snorkel and explore the surrounding area, enjoying all it has to offer.
Adam T. targeted permit on the flats with guide Dubs. He was successful in his pursuit and managed to land two great permit in the 15- to 25-pound range. Adam and Dubs had some shots at bonefish and landed a handful, but this was not their main target species for the week. This was Adam’s second trip to Turneffe.
Bernie S. spent the second week of his trip with guide Michael, Bernie is a multiple time return guest and spends most of his days looking for tailing bonefish, reminiscing with the guides and spending time with his “adopted family” here on Turneffe. For Bernie, the fishing is always great and if you ask him he will tell you the same.
Long time friends and business partners Jeff C., Matt B., Allan P. and Charlie P. came on a saltwater fly-fishing exploration. They spent most of their time hunting bonefish and permit with guides Pops and Willie. They all landed bonefish and Matt caught his first. They found some schools of permit and had multiple shots. Matt and Charlie also spent some time trolling outside the reef for barracuda and other alternative target species.
Ralph L. primarily dedicated his week to landing a barracuda on the fly. Ralph fished with guide Alex E. Changing his strategy throughout the week, he finally managed to land one and is determined to come back and try to land a bigger one. Ralph also waded the flats successfully for bonefish.
Tony F. and Gerry M. fished with guide Capt. Tony and had a great week landing a handful of bonefish each day, plus hooking up with the first tarpon of the season – only to have it break off after jumping a few times. Gerry, not to be left behind, was on her A-game, showing that the bonefish can be tamed in her own way. Tony and Gerry also spend some time fishing outside the reef and managed to land a 21-pound black grouper.
Successful flies this week for bonefish were the “pops bitters” Crazy Charlie’s, Micro crabs in tan, and Christmas’s island specials.
Permit flies that were getting action was the Del brown Merkin, rag head crabs in size #2 and EP descendants in #1/0.
