Covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres and divided into about fifty sovereign states, Europe is the second smallest continent globally. Famous for its castles, palaces, landmarks and landscapes, it’s exceptionally diverse and attracts millions of tourists every year. Over recent years, one sector that has boomed is the number of visiting hunters, keen to sample some of the fantastic shooting and wildfowling opportunities the continent offers. The countries of the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, France and Hungary, to name a few, are among the most popular amongst travelling guns.
Thanks to its beautiful, diverse landscape and ideal habitat for a host of game species, Hungary offers some unrivalled variation. Its phenomenal Pheasant shooting in Bodony, located in the north of the Mátra Mountains, is a popular spot and here bags of 300-600 birds aren’t uncommon. The bigger game shooting for the Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Roe Deer and Wild Boar is also first-class. France, like Hungary, is also known for its variation with Pheasants, Partridges and Ducks offering some great wing shooting sport.
When you think of shooting holidays to Spain and Portugal, you think of one species; the Red-Legged Partridge, or RedLeg as it’s also known. Given their countries proximity to North Africa, the landscape and climate are far drier and hotter than the UK, making it ideal for the Partridges breeding and development.
Finally, you have Sweden; the country often referred to as the ‘Hunters Playground’. Renowned for its Driven Pheasant days, decoying the world-famous Ducks and Geese, with ‘no bag limit’ and stalking the elusive Capercaillie and Black Grouse.
