Partridges are medium-sized non-migratory birds, intermediate between the larger Pheasants and the smaller Quail, with a wide native distribution throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Species like the Grey and Red-Legged Partridge are extremely popular amongst travelling guns, and this has seen them being introduced into large areas of North America. The birds have thrived, especially in Spain and Portugal in Europe. The most popular and abundant is probably the Red-Legged Partridge. This pretty little bird is sandy brown in colouration with black and brown barring down its wings. It also features a ‘black necklace’ which refers to the dark band around its neck. They grow around 30cm to 35cm, with a wingspan of 47cm to 50cm and weigh anywhere between 18oz and 20oz.
