South America is a continent entirely in the Western Hemisphere; it covers 17,840,000 square kilometres and contains twelve sovereign states: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It features a fascinating and diverse landscape; it’s home to Angel Falls, the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, the Andes, the most extended mountain range and the Amazon, the largest river by volume. It’s not just the Amazon, which is significant, though, as South America has three essential river basins, the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraguay/Paraná. These rivers and tributaries offer the adventurous fly fishermen the chance to fish some of the wildest, most exciting waters for all different species.
Bolivia and Argentina offer the freshwater fly angler the chance to fish and catch the stunning Golden Dorado. In Bolivia, the Agua Negra, Secure and the Pluma River see an extensive run of migratory fish and have exceptional reputations, producing specimens to over 20lb. The crystal-clear wetlands of the Pira lodge and the mighty Parana river in Argentina are also famed for their Golden Dorado fishing. Brazil is, without doubt, one of the jewels in the crown of South American fly fishing, fishing in and around the Amazon River and Basin, you can expect Peacock Bass, Apapaima, Tambaqui and other Pacu members.
The countries of Argentina and Chile found further south in South America, where the landscapes and climate are different from that in the north, are renowned for their exceptional Salmon and Trout fishing. In Argentina and Patagonia, Sea Trout fishing is world-class, with 20lb fish being common. Famous rivers such as the Rio Grande, Rio Gallegos and Rio Irigoyen, not only offer some of the best fly fishing in South America but some of the best you’ll find anywhere in the world.
