The Snook, also known as the ‘Sergeant Fish’, is a species of marine fish found throughout the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from the coast of North Carolina to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. They inhabit both salt and fresh water and are often found in coastal wetland ponds, island networks and creeks; they’re very structure orientated and only found in open water on rare occasions. They thrive in warm water and are extremely sensitive to temperature changes.
Snook average around 5lb to 15lb; however, fish weighing between 20lb and 30lb is not unusual, primarily when spawning occurs. Several giant fish of over 40lb have been landed throughout the years, and the current world record stands at a whopping 53lb. Although they often appear timid, don’t be tricked by their seemingly spooky nature, they are aggressive feeders, and adult fish will gulp a 12-inch mullet with no abandon.
Snook are a very popular species amongst anglers because of their tasty easting and their sporting qualities. Their elongated, muscular, silvery body is built for speed, and they put up a tremendous battle when hooked. They can be targeted with lures and bait but are particularly fun when fished for on the fly with large streamers and poppers. As a species, they form part of the saltwater fly fishing grand slam.
