Within close distance from the lodge, you will find regional attractions. These include Fortunato Atencio Stadium, Golfito Marina, Parque Nacional de Fauna Silvestre Golfito, Corcovado National Park Office and also Playa Cacao.

Any of these attractions are a must-visit part of Costa Rica. They can all be booked with the fishing lodge staff on arrival. Zancudo Lodge is located on the scenic Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, on the Bay of Golfo Dulce, four miles from Golfito. The Golfito Bay area of the Pacific Ocean is renowned for its excellent saltwater fishing. The Pacific Ocean borders Zancudo’s property on the West and the Sabalo River on the east. Head over to your YouTube Channel to see the fantastic fishing available at Zancudo Lodge.

Fishing

Your fishing holiday can be tailored entirely to suit your desires. From inshore, to offshore, to fishing the river banks. Our fishing guides have years of fishing these waters. There is not much they do not know. A significant advantage of fishing with these guides is that they are very experienced in all fishing techniques. If you are a die-hard fly angler, then everything will be planned around taking you to areas that will suit this style of fishing. If you wish to popper and lure fish all day, then your guide will take you to deeper areas. Searching for these hard fighting pelagic species. If you would like a deeper understanding of what the fishing is like in Costa Rica, make sure to read our Zancudo Lodge Fishing Report.

Not only do they have Sailfish and Marlin, but their big secret is the variety of light tackle stand-up fishing that’s available. Here is some information to help you decide when you would like to travel:

  • Marlin: All Marlin species are caught year-round. The peak time for Blue Marlin is November and December, March, and April, while the Black Marlin peak is during July and August.
  • Sailfish: Common year-round but peaking from November to May. It is not unusual to catch more than 20 sails in a day. When you get a Sailfish bite, you will know about it.
  • Dorado: Year-round, with seasonal highs during November to April.
  • Tuna: Large Yellowfin, in the 200- to 300 lb range, are often found feeding under the large schools of porpoises. Schoolie sized Yellowfin are available year-round.
  • Bigeye: Considered the bruisers in the Tuna family, they are common year-round. Hooking a large Bigeye will lead you on an epic multi-hour fight.
  • Roosterfish: Available year-round with typical sizes ranging from 20 to 70 lbs.
  • Snapper: There are over a dozen types of Snappers ranging between 15 to 100 lbs.

Boats

Zancudo Fishing lodge has eight boats with custom-built 28’ centre-consoles with twin Suzuki 140 HP four-stroke engines. And three 32’ Contenders with two 300 HP four-stroke Yamaha engines. The Contender is equipped with all the necessary navigational electronics. Along with an icebox to keep the refreshments cool. There is a toilet onboard – an essential requirement when spending a day in the ocean or on the river banks. Please call if you wish to upgrade to the contender boats.

Other Activities

If you fancy a break from the world-class fishing, then you can book an eco-tour at the lodge. These eco-tours include wildlife sanctuary tours. Deep in the Osa Peninsula lies a vast area of rainforest. Developed for the sole purpose of the rehabilitation of Costa Rica’s treasured and injured critters. Fishing hours are normally 6 am – 4 pm

Each day you can choose where and how you wish to fish. Zancudo Lodge specialises in lure and fly fishing so why not try and tempt a very aggressive hard fighting Tuna on a popper rod. Once these fish are hooked you will be in for some fun.

Another huge advantage with your stay at Zancudo Lodge is that all your tackle is provided from all your lure and fly rods and reels to the heavy stand up and fight equipment. They even supply all lure, poppers, jigs and most flies. (Large Marlin flies can be purchased from the lodge)

The key to a productive day is correspondence with your captain

Day 7: Fishing Day

This will be your last fishing day so if there are any species that have evaded you during your week this is the time to target them. Questions & Answers

Where is the hotel?

The hotel is based in the Puntarenas Providence, Playa Zancuda in Costa Rica. Set amongst some stunning Costa Rican Jungle right on the beach. The beaches are unspoilt and one can walk for many miles without coming into any contact with any other people.

Where will I fish?

If you chose to offshore fish then the fishing will be out in the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The inshore fishing takes you along some of the most remote and beautiful deserted beaches in Costa Rica in search of rocky outcrops and shallow banks where the water is turbulent.

How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?

On your offshore fishing days, the grounds are around 30 – 40 minutes away from the hotel. The inshore is split between zones and depending on what zone you will be fishing that day it can range anything from 5 minutes to 45minutes away from the hotel.

What fish will I catch?

Depending on your targets and if you have certain fish you wish to target then you can expect to catch; Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Tuna, Amberjacks, Roosters, Sharks, and lots of reef groupers and Cubera Snappers.

How many fish will I catch?

If you are fishing offshore then the numbers of fish are lower as the fish you will be targeting are spread around. So if targeting the Marlin and Sailfish you should expect to raise a couple each day. When fishing Tuna you should be looking at multiple strikes. The inshore fishing is different as the fish are more concentrated in areas that are accessible by boat. Inshore fishing is a lot more productive as you can spin, fly or baitfish.

How will I fish?

A normal day fishing offshore will be either spent trolling artificial lures or you can popper/baitfish. Depending on what you are fishing for your skipper will suggest the best methods. The inshore fishing is a lot more active as there are a lot more species willing to take your bait or lure.

Do the guides speak English?

The guides speak good English.

Who is best suited to this destination?

This destination is perfect for a huge variety of anglers from beginners to the most expert of anglers. Your skipper will help you with every style of fishing and if you have never lured fished for hard fighting species before they will give you some lessons. Fly fishing is also a great method and again our skippers will be on hand to help you with everything.

What skill level is required?

A general knowledge of fishing from a boat is an advantage but not necessary. The guides are there to help you achieve what you want out of your holiday.

How physically demanding is this trip?

On the whole, the trip is not that physical apart from playing the fish. The boats are easy to walk around and have comfortable seats for moving around from spot to spot. There is a little step down into the boats at the marina.

When is the best time to go?

The season is November to July with the peak times being from November to March.

How will I get there?

The best route to get to Costa Rica is to take advantage of the direct British Airways flights from London Gatwick straight to San Jose in Costa Rica. However, there are indirect flights from most other UK airports and if you are travelling with us outside of the UK we can look for alternative routes.

What is the accommodation like?

The hotel is stunning and service is their number one aim. Nothing is too much for the staff. Surrounded by idyllic jungle foliage, its own private beach and their own private marina this truly is a fisherman’s dream location.

What is the food like?

Breakfast is served in the main restaurant and there is a huge selection from cooked breakfasts to the more continental style breakfast. Lunch is packed in a coolbox at taken down to your boats each day or alternatively if you are not fishing there is a superb menu of lunches from fresh fish to hamburgers. Evening meals are crafted from locally sourced products and locally caught fish. All the food is prepared and cooked onsite by the professional cooks.

Is fishing tackle provided?

The great thing about Zancudo lodge is that they supply everything. If you fancy trying some popper fishing or vertical jigging they will supply everything you will need, try to catch a Marlin on a fly, they will supply the lot. You can just turn up with no fishing equipment and they will have it covered.

Is internet and phone signal available?

The phone signal around the hotel is good plus you get free Wifi at the hotel.

Are there other activities available?

There are many different tours available that can be arranged with the reception and they have a great spa onsite. (Contact a member of the Sportquest team, who will give you a more detailed list of other activities)

How much does it cost?

We offer the complete package including all flights and transfers. To view, all available weeks and prices click the Dates and Prices tab above.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange your own we can book just the lodge and fishing for you. If you wish to book or have any questions please call our offices on 01603 407596.

Gregg and Goldine were fantastic and very inviting and hospitable. They have definitely created an amazing gem down there in the rain forest. The entire staff was just wonderful and made our stay just as perfect as possible. I would drop names but do not want to risk missing anyone since every single person we interacted with was great. The fishing, the environment, the wildlife all amazing and cant wait to go back

Barry

The resort has luxury accommodations, tropical gardens, outstanding customer service and gourmet dining which are all inclusive. They have top of the line 32 ft. Contenders with dual 300 hp motors. You have your own private boat and our outstanding captain, who are very knowledgeable on the fishing in the area but also made our fishing adventure a lot of fun. We caught 5 Yellow-fin Tuna, one over 65 lbs., Sailfish, Rooster fish, Crevalle Jack and Red Snapper on our three days of fishing.

John

Every aspect of this trip to Zancudo Lodge was first rate. Twice daily laundry service, incredible food, courteous
staff, attention to detail and incredible fishing. This lodge is very much about the fishing. Expect to rise early and start the day with a hot breakfast and then off to the boats at 6:00 am. You really are in the best of hands and the staff need a gold medal for their services. Well done to all involved

Peter

There is plenty to do besides fish at the lodge. However, the fishing is what we came for Our captain Tito was extremely knowledgeable and fun to be around. Every day was an adventure. The boats and equipment are first class. The fishing is spectacular and we all enjoyed our experience

Larry

Their attention to detail includes many amenities to make you feel like you are truly on holiday in a remote part of Costa Rica. The owner Gregg and wife and staff are incredibly accommodating. The Contender fishing boats are extremely well kept and well-equipped, and the captains really know their stuff. Topmarks all round and thanks for a great holiday

David
