Thatch Caye in Belize is a private island escape located just a short boat ride from Dangriga, in the heart of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. Surrounded by rich marine life, it’s a dream destination for anglers targeting the famous flats trio of Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon, while also offering a memorable tropical retreat for non-angling guests. With space for just 30 guests, the island delivers an intimate, relaxed, and truly exclusive experience.
Part of the renowned Muy’Ono collection and a sister lodge to Blue Horizon, Thatch Caye benefits from access to a highly experienced senior guiding team, originally developed by legendary Belizean fly-fishing guide and Orvis Award winner Lincoln Westby. Widely regarded as one of the finest fly-fishing guides in the world, and especially respected as a true “Permit Master”, his influence is felt throughout the fishing programme. While Permit are a major focus, the surrounding flats also offer excellent opportunities for Bonefish and Tarpon, giving anglers a genuine chance of achieving the coveted Grand Slam, catching all three species within a 24-hour period.
One of Thatch Caye’s greatest strengths is its appeal to both anglers and non-anglers. The island offers a superb range of alternative activities, whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a little of both. Accommodation is a real highlight, with everything from beautiful overwater bungalows to spacious oceanfront cabanas. Each room has been thoughtfully designed using reclaimed island materials, creating a perfect blend of rustic charm, sustainable luxury, and barefoot island comfort.

Thatch Caye is one of the finest destinations in the world for anglers who want to focus specifically on Permit fishing on the fly. Set within the rich waters of Southern Belize and the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, this fishery is renowned for its exceptional opportunities to target tailing Permit in shallow water. While other species are present throughout the area, Permit are undoubtedly the main attraction, with anglers often enjoying numerous shots each day at fish typically ranging from 5lb to 20lb. Few places offer such consistent opportunities for these notoriously wary and rewarding flats fish.
Although Permit takes centre stage, Thatch Caye also offers excellent chances to target both Bonefish and Tarpon, adding variety and the possibility of achieving a coveted flats Grand Slam.
Bonefish are found in good numbers around the Cayes and selected reef flats. Known as the “ghosts of the flats”, these fast-moving fish are often seen in large schools, with average sizes ranging from 2lb to 5lb throughout the year. For anglers seeking a more technical challenge, double-figure fish get landed each season, but these often require more precise presentation. Even during lower tides or less favourable conditions for Permit, the lodge guides can generally, consistently locate productive Bonefish water.
Tarpon are also present year-round, particularly in selected channels and protected island lagoons. The main migration generally runs from late April through to August, when strong numbers of fish move through the channels and Cayes of the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. With considerably less fishing pressure than the more famous areas of Northern Belize, Tarpon in this region are often more willing to eat, giving anglers exciting and genuine opportunities when conditions are right.
If you prefer more traditional angling, the resort also offers half-day and full-day offshore fishing packages. These trips give you the chance to enjoy reef fishing, trolling, and classic Belizean dropline fishing, guided by a local captain who will take you to some of his favourite productive spots.
Depending on the day, you’ll have the opportunity to target species such as Snapper, Grouper, and Barracuda. Better still, if you decide to keep your catch, the Thatch Caye team will prepare it for you and serve it for dinner with a selection of delicious sides.

The Thatch Caye fishery stretches for roughly 40 miles inside the Belize Barrier Reef, running from Dangriga down past Placencia. Throughout this area, anglers will find a network of productive flats, many of them relatively small in size. This means you may move between flats more often, but it also makes fish easier to locate, reducing long periods of poling without a shot. The island’s remote position, right in the heart of the fishery, means long boat runs from the mainland are avoided. On some days, the fishing begins almost immediately, without even needing to start the engine.
The flats themselves are breathtaking, with crystal-clear water flowing over pancake flats, reef flats, and cayes surrounded by vibrant coral. Most are made up of sand and turtle grass, and on the right tides, many come alive with schools of tailing Permit. While other destinations may rival the quality of the fishing, few can match the sheer beauty of the flats around Thatch Caye.
Beyond the reef-side flats and cayes, several mainland lagoons between Placencia and Dangriga hold Permit, Tarpon, and Snook. Although these lagoon waters are not quite as visually striking as the reef flats, they offer excellent variety and often produce fish that are more willing to eat a well-presented fly.
In short, it’s classic, technical Permit fishing, with long leaders, careful presentations, and tailing fish in a truly spectacular setting.
Thatch Caye uses the experienced guide team from the renowned Blue Horizon operation, fishing from traditional 23-foot pangas. These boats are perfectly suited to the waters of Southern Belize, offering an excellent platform for both poling the flats and covering open water between fishing areas. Spacious, stable, and practical, they also offer a great vantage point for searching for or tailing fish.
Note: Rental equipment is available at Thatch Caye, and there is a small fly-and-tackle shop on site. However, we recommend bringing your own rods, reels, flies, and terminal tackle wherever possible, ensuring you arrive fully prepared for your time on the flats.

While Thatch Caye is a true Permit-fishing paradise, it’s also an exceptional destination for families and non-angling companions. Open year-round, the resort offers a wide range of activities to suit all interests, with friendly, knowledgeable, and fully trained staff on hand to help you make the most of your stay.
Located just three miles from the Belize Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most pristine marine environments and the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, Thatch Caye provides outstanding access to memorable snorkelling and scuba diving. Beneath the surface, you can discover colourful coral gardens, vibrant schools of tropical fish, turtles, rays, and even sharks. Whether you’re an experienced diver or trying it for the first time, the on-site PADI 5-Star Dive Operation and expert guides ensure a safe and memorable experience.
Away from the water, full-day inland tours offer the chance to explore Belize’s rich natural and cultural heritage. From rainforest adventures to ancient Mayan ruins, these excursions provide a fascinating glimpse into the heart of the country.
Back on the island, guests can enjoy complimentary use of kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes, along with island games such as volleyball, ping pong, and cornhole. For those looking to unwind, Thatch Caye also offers yoga, massage and fitness options, plus a beautiful natural saltwater pool, making it a wonderfully well-rounded escape for anglers and non-anglers alike.
