Solo Fishing Adventures Andaman Islands Sportquest Exclusive

Bluewater Fishing In the Beautiful Bay Of Bengal

These Sportquest Holidays exclusive solo traveller weeks have been carefully designed to allow single anglers the chance to experience a spectacular popper and jig fishing adventure on the Andaman Islands. While our standard trips to this stunning Indian archipelago are based on four anglers sharing flights, single room accommodation and fishing, these specially curated departures allow you to join a group of like-minded Sportquest customers as a solo guest, with no single supplements or surcharges to pay.

Welcome to the Andaman Islands, where Giant Trevally crush poppers in open water and Dogtooth Tuna rip jigs from the depths – this is popping and jigging at its most extreme, set against the backdrop of rainforest and remote reef systems. Exclusive to Sportquest Holidays, this fully guided saltwater adventure puts you on the front line of some of the wildest fishing on earth.

Just a short boat ride from Port Blair, you’ll access legendary marks like Campbell Shoal, Invisible Bank, and Dalrymple Bank, vast, barely-touched reefs where apex predators thrive. GTs steal the spotlight, but the supporting cast is just as fierce: Dogtooth, Almaco Jack, Bluefin and Golden Trevally, Jobfish, Grouper, Barracuda, and even Black and Blue Marlin.

You’ll fish from a private 38ft sports boat, with just four anglers per group. A professional captain and guide will tailor every session, whether it’s heavy popping, vertical jigging, or a custom approach, ensuring maximum action and personal attention.

As with all our Solo Traveller dates, our weeks have been hand-picked in collaboration with our trusted lodge partners to coincide with the peak times of the season, based on historic catch records and local conditions.

"A trip to the Andaman Islands a great trip for experienced anglers, the heat and humidity can be overwhelming at times, but that's what you expect. The fishing for the GT's is amazing, really strenuous, especially with the heat. I trained prior to my trip, and it paid off, no aching arms. The accommodation on the main Island is great, A/C and wi-fi for those who can't get by without it. If you are lucky enough to get over to Little Andaman for a few days, you're in for a real treat, welcome to the real India, very basic, but you're on a fishing trip, not a 5 star luxury retreat. The food at both hotels is really great, especially if you bring fish back. Wahoo curry is amazing, as are all the other dishes they serve up. One thing we all worried about prior to going was the dreaded 'Deli Belly'. None of us had any problems, due to the food being so fresh and tasty. Akshay and his helpers are amazing, always there to help, with any situation. I would recommend taking some light slow jigging equipment, as and when the popping gets a bit much, you can catch a variety of tropical fish, some small but some big ones too, you just never know what you'll catch on the light gear, I had a bonus GT on the light gear, which was amazing. Wahoo fishing on light spinning gear was a blast, medium sized Rapallas on light spinning tackle is a real bonus. Thanks SportsQuest for a great time."

"My trip to the Andaman's was excellent, all of the arrangements went very well and everything ran smoothly.
Akshay is an excellent captain and he was very helpful in making sure that my tackle and methods were appropriate as this was my first time jigging and popping. I managed to catch 13 GT’s and a number of other species including barracuda, wahoo and a shark during the week. The fishing was exciting and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip, I would certainly go again hopefully a bit later in the season when the big fish are about as I would love to catch a GT above 30kg."

"I have never met anyone who worked harder for his clients than Ashkay of Andaman Anglers - he deserves unqualified praise.
The pre-trip information supplied was a little out of date. You recommended that we contact Terry at Jigabite which was a great idea, his knowledge is second to none and informed me to take 5 poppers and 3 stickbaits. Between the four of us we lost just one stick bait when a huge barracuda bit it off. Given the price of poppers I would suggest 5 lures would be amply sufficient. Jigs are a different matter - I lost 2 to bite offs, one when attempting to boat a silver tip shark which took my jig, and one in the bottom, so maybe 8 jigs would be OK.
Another issue was barbless hooks - used on trebles for poppers but not required for singles, and Ashkay said a complete no no for jigging - the pre-tour info suggested barbless hooks should be used in all cases.
Ashkay arranged a bird-watching excursion on the final morning which was very enjoyable, cost would be £30 for up to three people, I drafted a paragraph to advertise this for Ashkay and he seemed quite keen to offer this as an optional activity, managed to see some of the endemic species of the Amdamans. "A great holiday to celebrate my 60th birthday, first time doing this extreme style of fishing and despite being physically arduous the rewards in landing a fish made it all worth while. A well put together vacation package by Sportquest, the knowledge and expertise from the skipper and guide helped our group catch a vast range of different sized and various fish species. Well recommended for anyone keen on fishing, especially if you like the battle needed to land those Giant Trevally!!!"

"Good fishing, food, boat and staff very good. The harder you fish the better, the fishing not as good if your unfit and you need to like curry. Mostly popping and jigging - some of the best popping in the world .If you come, bring a lite jigging setup as there's lots of reef fish and it will give you a break from popping.

"A good holiday, however the fishing was tough and we only caught about half what we did when I went in November. The crew did everything they could to put us on the fish but for some reason we were not catching however that is fishing, I would certainly go again and I would not hesitate to recommend going."

Accommodation

Our newly refurbished guesthouse is ideally located just a five-minute walk from the boat jetty and enjoys stunning views across the Indian Ocean. With six spacious, air-conditioned rooms, each featuring en-suite bathrooms and comfortable twin beds, it accommodates up to 12 guests. However, to ensure maximum comfort and privacy, we host only four anglers per week, giving each person a private room. This added space is an excellent bonus after long days on the water.

The guesthouse itself is simple but has been renovated, and its bright, modern interiors and carefully chosen furnishings reflect the charm of India while providing a clean, comfortable space to relax. Each room includes two beds, a small table and chair, storage for your fishing gear, and hanging space for clothes. The bathrooms throughout the lodge are newly updated, immaculately clean, and well-equipped with everything you need.

Food & Drink

All meals are freshly prepared by our talented in-house chef using locally sourced ingredients. Expect a variety of delicious Indian dishes made from produce grown on nearby farms, and fish caught fresh from the surrounding waters. If you land a Tuna or Snapper during your day’s fishing, you’re welcome to bring it back for the chef to prepare in a variety of ways. Evenings are typically spent on the large balconies overlooking the bay, an ideal spot to unwind, enjoy a cold local beer, and share stories from the day. While beer is available at the guesthouse, those after something more substantial can head to the local pub.

Indian Ocean Fishing

The Andaman Islands offer some of the most exciting and diverse saltwater fishing on the planet, making them a dream destination for adventurous anglers. These remote islands provide access to an incredible range of hard-fighting bluewater species, with action starting just a short ride from shore.

A vast network of untouched reefs surrounds the islands, rich in marine life and largely free from commercial fishing pressure. These thriving ecosystems create ideal conditions for targeting powerful predators such as Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Groupers, Jobfish, Red Bass, and more. Whether you’re casting surface poppers into breaking fish or working vertical jigs through deeper channels, the variety, size, and intensity of the bites here are simply world-class.

Located in the Bay of Bengal, between India and Thailand, the Andaman archipelago comprises more than 570 islands, only 28 of which are inhabited. This remote setting offers anglers a rare chance to fish in a truly untouched environment, surrounded by white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and dense tropical rainforest. All our trips begin in Port Blair, the capital of the islands, which serves as the perfect launch point for accessing this remarkable fishery.

From the moment your boat leaves the dock, you’re entering a wild, unpressured bluewater arena, where each cast brings the promise of a new battle. The Andamans are one of the last great saltwater frontiers, offering memorable action, jaw-dropping scenery, and the chance to connect with some of the ocean’s most sought-after species.

Catching Fish In The Andaman Islands

Over the past two decades, bluewater popper and jig fishing has surged in popularity, thanks to cutting-edge tackle developments and a growing list of exciting global destinations. It’s become one of the most exhilarating ways to target powerful pelagic predators, and few places deliver the experience like the Andaman Islands.

Popper Fishing

Popper fishing is all about explosive surface action. These large, noisy lures mimic distressed baitfish thrashing on the surface, triggering aggressive, heart-stopping strikes from predators below. The key is a fast, rhythmic retrieve and a good ‘popping’ action to grab attention.

The most productive areas tend to be rocky outcrops, reef edges, and underwater structures, where big fish lie in wait for unsuspecting prey. This method can be physically demanding. GTs, Tuna, and other topwater hunters hit hard and fight harder, but the thrill is unmatched. When you need a break, trolling provides a more relaxed way to cover water while still keeping lines in.

Jig Fishing

Jigging is the perfect complement to topwater fishing, especially over deeper reefs and drop-offs. This vertical technique targets the whole water column, allowing you to reach predators holding at any depth. Using metal jigs in a variety of lengths, weights, and colours, you’ll work the lure with a specific cadence, fast, slow, or ‘butterfly’ style, to entice strikes.

It’s a highly versatile method that consistently produces action from Dogtooth Tuna, Groupers, Amberjack, and more. Our expert guides, captains, and deckhands will recommend the best jigs and techniques for each session based on tide, water depth, and species behaviour.

Note: On our solo-traveller trips to the Andaman Islands, you can hire a complete tackle package that provides everything you need. You can also purchase poppers, leaders, hooks, and other terminal tackle.

Fish With Us, Fish With The Best

With the help of our trusted friends and partners on the Andaman Islands, our solo weeks give travelling anglers the chance to fish some of the most productive and remote marks in the region, including the legendary Campbell Shoal, Invisible Bank, Dalrymple Bank, and many more. Most fishing grounds are within a comfortable 45 to 60-minute run from base, allowing for full, action-packed days on the water.

Each morning, your captain will brief the group on the day’s plan. If there’s a specific species you’re keen to target or a method you’d like to try, like popping, jigging, or trolling, don’t hesitate to speak up. However, as this is a solo traveller trip made up of like-minded anglers, group consensus and a flexible mindset are key to keeping things enjoyable for everyone. Ultimately, your captain knows these waters better than anyone and will tailor the day to give you the best chance of success, based on current conditions and activity.

While the Andaman Islands are technically a year-round fishery (weather permitting), our solo traveller departures are hand-picked to coincide with peak tides and the most productive fishing windows. The primary season typically runs from October through to May, before the onset of the monsoon, which can begin any time between late May and July. As one season ends, another begins, and with it, another opportunity for world-class fishing in one of the last true saltwater frontiers.

Sportfishing Boats & Guides

All our trips to the Andaman Islands utilise 38ft custom-built FRP monohull – a vessel specifically designed for these tropical waters. With a spacious open deck, low gunnels, and anti-skid surfaces, it offers the ideal platform for both popping and jigging. Powered by twin 250hp fuel-injected four-stroke Yamaha engines, the ride is smooth, quiet, and reliable, perfect for covering ground in search of the most productive marks. These sleek sportfishing boats accommodate 1 to 4 anglers, ensuring a highly personal experience.

Equipped with the latest 10-inch Garmin touchscreen GPS/Fishfinder, navigation and fish location are efficient and precise. Factory-fitted transducers support deep jigging, while VHF ship-to-shore radios ensure reliable communication at all times. Onboard safety equipment includes SOLAS and MMD-approved life jackets, ring buoys, a medical first aid kit, and fire extinguishers so that you can focus on the fishing with total peace of mind.

Each vessel is skippered by an experienced captain and a professional guide, both dedicated to making your trip as productive and enjoyable as possible. Our guides speak excellent English and will tailor each day to your preferred fishing style, whether topwater casting, vertical jigging, or trolling.

Note: If you’d like to explore the town in the evening, a basic translation app or English-to-Hindi dictionary may come in handy, although most locals understand simple English.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Thank you so much for sharing your highlights, Stu, what a fantastic summary of the trip. It’s always great to hear about personal best fish, and we’re especially pleased that the food on Havelock Island and the accommodation location made such a strong impression.

It’s brilliant to hear that you enjoyed experimenting with different techniques and, just as importantly, had plenty of laughs along the way. That willingness to try new approaches is exactly what makes fishing in the Andamans so rewarding. Your comments about Akshay are very much appreciated, he’s an excellent guide, and it’s great to know his knowledge and enthusiasm helped you get the most out of the experience.

Your advice about keeping at it with the poppers and jigs is spot on, and we’re glad the effort paid off with some great fish (even if the arms and back felt it afterwards!). Thanks as well for the light-hearted note about the gear, many anglers can definitely relate to that.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and look forward to welcoming you back for the next trip.

Akshay took numerous piccies so I can’t add to that much really.

The only point I’d mention to ‘improve’ is that there was no safety briefing on the boat in advance of travelling. Having worked in aviation for 40 years I maybe being a little picky but it’s paramount to an airline.
Given that we went out of sight of land and other maritime craft too, a bridging would be a useful addition. One of the other chaps also mentioned this when we were talking.

Other than that just a big thank you to you and all the team for organising, following up and advising.
Lisa, a great pick up on my itinerary too re the disconnect on the flight connections. Thank you.

Regards
Derek

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed piece of feedback it’s genuinely appreciated.

I’m delighted to hear that the trip went so well overall and that Akshay’s organisation, the fishing, and the food all lived up to expectations. It’s also great to know that, while the accommodation was simple, it aligned with what you anticipated and didn’t detract from the experience. Popping and jigging certainly can be more demanding than many expect, so your comments there will definitely resonate with future guests.

Your point regarding the absence of a safety briefing is extremely well made. Given your background in aviation, your perspective is especially valuable, and we completely agree that a clear pre-departure briefing is an important addition particularly when operating offshore. This is something we will take forward with the team to ensure it’s addressed consistently going forward.

Thank you as well for your kind words about Lisa and the wider team. I’ll be sure to pass on your comments, especially regarding the itinerary connection she’ll be very pleased to hear that.

We’re really glad you enjoyed the experience and the company, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on another adventure in the future.

Best regards,
Paul

Anthony

A great holiday to celebrate my 60th birthday, first time doing this extreme style of fishing and despite being physically arduous the rewards in landing a fish made it all worth while. A well put together vacation package by Sportquest, the knowledge and expertise from the skipper and guide helped our group catch a vast range of different sized and various fish species. Well recommended for anyone keen on fishing, especially if you like the battle needed to land those Giant Trevally!!!

Good fishing, food, boat and staff very good. The harder you fish the better, the fishing not as good if your unfit and you need to like curry. Mostly popping and jigging - some of the best popping in the world .If you come, bring a lite jigging setup as there's lots of reef fish and it will give you a break from popping.

Kevin

A good holiday, however the fishing was tough and we only caught about half what we did when I went in November. The crew did everything they could to put us on the fish but for some reason we were not catching however that is fishing, I would certainly go again and I would not hesitate to recommend going.
