The Wahoo is a pelagic fish found in all the world’s tropical and subtropical waters, including the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. It’s often referred to as ‘Ono’, which means ‘delicious’ in Hawaiian and is valued amongst anglers for its fantastic eating and excellent sport fishing qualities. Also known as the Pacific kingfish, it is closely related to the King Mackerel or Spanish Mackerel.
Wahoo have a relatively short life span and only live for around nine years but are fast-growing. They tend to feed in solidarity or loose-knit groups of two or three fish, and their diet consists of a range of baitfish and squid. With a large mouth packed full of sharp serrated teeth, the Wahoo can render large prey into bite-sized pieces, allowing it to eat fish much more significant than themselves. They average around 30lb to 40lb in size; however, fish of over 80lb are not uncommon. The largest specimen ever recorded was a fish of 2.5m in length and 150lb in weight.
They are lean, mean hunting machines and often referred to as the ‘Cheetah Of The Sea’ because they are among the fastest fish in the ocean. They’re also incredibly beautiful, with iridescent, grey-blue vertical stripes running the length of their flank. Big game fishing anglers can target them in many different ways, using both bait and lures; however, the most popular and effective way is to troll for them.
