The Indian Ocean, covering an incredible 70,560,000 square kilometres or 19.8 percent of the water on the Earth’s surface, is the third-largest ocean globally. The islands within the Indian Ocen are a varied collection, from small territories, some of the smallest in the world, to larger island nations such as Madagascar. Many hug the coastline, but others are remote and hundreds of kilometres from any other land. The main islands found within the Indian Ocean are Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Sri Lanka.
With such a vast expanse of water and varied islands and archipelagos, it’s no surprise that there’s a whole host of exciting fishing opportunities on offer, from big game to popper and jig, to saltwater fly.
Madagascar is the largest island, found off the eastern coast of Africa across the Mozambique channel; it covers 587,041 square kilometres. It’s one of the most famous fishing spots in the Indian Ocean, and the island of Nosy Be, off its coastline, is a fantastic destination for real mixed sport fishing. Hard fighting Giant Trevally, Grouper, Amberjack, Sailfish, Dogtooth Tuna, King Mackerel are just a few of the species you can catch using an array of poppers and lures. Another island famed for its blue water fishing is Rodrigues Island, it’s much smaller in size, but the fishing is equally exciting.
Mauritius and Seychelles, two famous tourist destinations found in the Indian Ocean, offer some of the best saltwater fly fishing. The crystal clear atolls, reefs and sand flats around both islands are a haven for marine life and the perfect habitat for Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Snook and Milkfish. St Brandon’s in Mauritius is renowned amongst the saltwater fly fishing community and the Atolls of Cosmoledo, Astove, Alphonse and Farquhar in Seychelles.
