Pheasants are birds of several genera within the subfamily Phasianinae, of the family Phasianidae; they inhabit the world over and have a long history of residence as a game bird. The common Pheasant is one of the most hunted birds, and in many places, it has been introduced purely for that reason. Due to their willingness to stick to a home environment without straying and their differentiating flying abilities, they can provide some excellent sport for the guns. Four of the most common species include the Ring-necked, Michigan blueback, Blacknecks and Bazanty Pheasants.
Feeding on a diet of mainly seeds, grains, and berries in summer and a range of insects, fresh green shoots, and earthworms in winter, the birds can grow up to 60cm to 89cm. However, its tail accounts for almost 50cm of its total length. They have a wingspan of 71cm to 86cm and can weigh as much as 2lb to 3lb, and reach speeds of nearly 50 miles per hour. They’re well known for being highly decorated, and the male birds can produce some stunning colours. The bright gold barred plumage with fiery copper-red and chestnut brown plumage. The iridescent shine of the greens and purple feathers certainly capture your attention.
Traditionally Pheasants are hunted on driven shoots, with birds flushed out of the undergrowth, towards the guns, by a team of beaters and gun dogs. This can provide some exhilarating shooting as the bird’s dive and dart at speed from the undergrowth.
