The Yellowfin Tuna is a pelagic species found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. It’s beautiful metallic blue and silver in colouration, with bright yellow fins, giving the species its common name. They are capable of diving to considerable depths but are typically found offshore in waters up to 100m deep; however, they may venture well inshore on the continental shelf when water temperature and clarity are suitable, and food is abundant. Mid-ocean islands in the Pacific, Caribbean, and Indian Ocean all hold populations.
Often travelling in schools of similarly sized companions, they feed on a range of baitfish, crustaceans, and squid. The Yellowfin Tuna is among the larger Tuna species and can grow to over 400lb, but is significantly smaller than the Atlantic and Bluefin, which can reach sizes of over 900lb. They are also closely related to the Bigeye.
Like all Tuna, the Yellowfins are warm-blooded and built for speed, making them incredibly powerful swimmers. They can reach speeds of up to fifty miles per hour and navigate enormous distances across oceans. These things make them an incredible fighting fish and a species on many big game anglers bucket list. They can be targeted and caught on all manner of different baits and tactics; however, the most popular and effective way of catching them is traditional big game trolling, with either lure or bait. The Yellowfin Tuna aren’t just famed for being a fantastic sportfish; they’re also sought after for their excellent tasting meat, which can be eaten raw straight from the sea as Sashimi.
