Wilderness Fly Fishing Adventures

Sweden is a Nordic country located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe, bordering Norway to the west and north and Finland to the east. At 450,295 square kilometres, it’s the largest Nordic country by both area and population and is the fifth-largest country in Europe. It’s famous for its pop music, innovative flat-pack furniture, and unique traditions like Fika (a coffee break); it’s also a country of stunning natural beauty.

The country is traditionally divided into three regions: in the north is a vast mountain and forest region, the central portion of the country is an expanse of lowland, and the south is made up of the Småland highlands. Much of the country, over 65 per cent, is heavily forested and covered in woodland, while over 39,960 km² is covered in water, comprising nearly one hundred thousand lakes and a vast array of river systems. It’s these waterways that attract travelling anglers from around the globe.

While many anglers visit Sweden to sample the sea fishing opportunities on offer or lure fishing for Pike, its real draw is for travelling fly rods, attracted by chance to experience a real wilderness adventure, wetting a fly for wild Brown Trout, Arctic Char and Grayling, to mention just a few.

Wilderness Heli Fishing Sweden

Our Wilderness Heli Fishing expedition offers travelling rods the chance to experience world-class fly fishing above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. This fully guided trip utilises four different helipads, flying anglers out to some of the most beautiful and remote spots in the country, wetting a fly for a for Brown Trout, Arctic Char, Grayling and Pike.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's The Fly Fishing Like?

When it comes to fly fishing, Sweden stands out as one of the best destinations in Europe, especially if you’re seeking an adventure in a true wilderness environment. Amidst breathtaking landscapes in the pristine waters of Swedish Lapland, you can experience the joy of casting your fly into the crystal-clear rivers and serene lakes for an abundance of Brown Trout, Arctic Char, Grayling, and Pike, making it a paradise for anglers seeking a thrilling and picturesque fishing experience.

When Is The Best Time To Fish?

The Swedish summer, characterised by the enchanting phenomenon of the midnight sun, is the ideal time for fly fishing. From June onwards, the climate is mild, inviting anglers to explore the breathtaking scenery. The long days and warm weather signal the start of the season for most fish species. The mild climate invites not only anglers but also fish as they migrate into rivers and lakes, eager to feed in the abundant summer conditions.

What Tackle Do I Need?

For a memorable fly fishing experience in Sweden, you’ll want to pack single-handed rods in the 4 to 6-weight range. Pair these with floating lines to match the tranquil waters and your fishing style. It can also be beneficial to bring along sink-tip lines to adapt to the varying conditions you might encounter.

What Other Activities Are Available?

Another reason why fishing holidays in Sweden are so popular is the vast range of other activities on offer for non-angling companions. Many famous Swedish cities, towns and villages are set in stunning scenery and steeped in history. They’re perfect for exploring and sightseeing, and you’ll find many quaint restaurants, boutiques and even spas. While many may be a distance from the wilderness, it’s possible to add extra days to your itinerary if you wish to explore more of this beautiful country.

If you seek more adventure, there are hiking trails, nature reserves, kite surfing, golf, and even deep-sea fishing.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Travelling to Sweden for your fly fishing escapade is straightforward and enjoyable. Begin your journey with a flight to Stockholm, where you can immerse yourself in the charming atmosphere of the city for a brief stopover. Then, catch a domestic flight to Kiruna, a gateway to the natural wonders of Lapland. From Kiruna, a scenic drive will lead you to an array of cosy fishing lodges nestled by tranquil waters.

As you arrive, prepare yourself for a spellbinding experience that combines the thrill of fishing with the enchanting beauty of Sweden’s wilderness, a true angler’s paradise.
