As well as these things, it’s also renowned for its world-class saltwater fly fishing. Anglers visiting this beautiful country can experience fishing for the ‘Big 3’: the prized Bonefish, Tarpon, and elusive Permit. Its spectacular coastline provides endless saltwater flats, creeks and lagoons, which are the perfect habitat for fishing. It’s easy to see why the fly fishing resorts in Belize see anglers from around the world return year after year.

"El Pescador, the fisherman, takes treating their guests like family seriously. Every guest is known and called by name, and not in a fake way. I was part of a six woman's fishing expedition, and we did not all know each other in advance. The el pescador setup, with a centralized dining area, both inside and out, brought us together at mealtimes and allowed us to meet and enjoy meaningful conversations each other and with other guests whether they were there as singles or in small groups. That's what family means in this lovely place."
"My wife and I stayed at El Pescador for our 5th anniversary. We were met at the dock and the Staff knew our names from the moment we arrived. They really made us a part of their family by the time we left. The staff helped us arrange for a guided all day snorkling/sailing trip. Both recommendations were perfect. Their onsite fishing manager took time out of his day to give me some pointers on saltwater fly fishing. The guides for the fishing were outstanding. I can't wait to go back!"
"The accommodations were first class. Sitting in the room or the lodge you would never believe that you were 30 miles off the coast of Belize. I'm not sure they get much better than that! All the meals were fabulous and there was plenty to eat. I really enjoyed the variety. Dion did an excellent job putting us on fish. He was very patient with us and we wouldn't have done as well as we did without him. This trip was everything we could have asked for. The accommodations were first class, the food was excellent and the fishing was second to none."
As well as providing some of the finest flat fishing in the world, Belize is also the perfect destination for a family fishing holiday.
There’s a wide range of activities for non-angling partners or anglers who want a day off from fishing. These include Catamaran sunset cruises, scuba and snorkelling courses, a round of golf on a private island, a cave tubing adventure or a jungle river cruise.
If you prefer, you can lounge at the pool or on one of the stunning beaches. Every day offers both a great new adventure and a perfect opportunity to relax.
Belize offers the saltwater fly fishermen one of the best chances in the world to catch a ‘Grand Slam’, capturing a Bonefish, Tarpon, and elusive Permit all in the same day. It’s also one of the few places where the ‘Super Grand Slam’ is also a possibility, catching the ‘big 3’ as well as a Snook.
Belize is a saltwater anglers paradise and offers some of the best fishing in the world. The healthy populations of Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon, have been protected for over ten years, with a nationwide catch-and-release law. Belize was the first and still the only country in the Caribbean to enforce such a law, and anglers have certainly seen its benefits.
The coastline of Belize is also incredibly diverse, with an interlocking network of rivers, creeks and lagoons as well as shallow water flats. It’s home to the second-longest barrier reef globally, dotted with hundreds of low-lying islands called Cayes, which host a wide range of rich marine life.
Belize is perfect for Permit, and the country has gained a reputation as the Permit Fishing capital of the world. The shallow bars and flats are generally 1 to 3 feet deep and feature a combination of turtle grass, hard coral, and sand, creating the perfect environment for a shy biting Permit.
Most of the saltwater flats in Belize are accessible via boat, and the majority of fishing will be sight fishing from the bow of our 16ft Dolphin Super Skiffs. These are custom built in the states and designed to cut through the chop and pole well in skinny water.
However, as well as boat fishing, there are some excellent wading opportunities too. The Bonefish flats start literally at the marina, and the Permit and Tarpon flats extend out as far as a 1.5-hour ride by boat.
The great thing about fishing in Belize is your guide can tailor the fishing packages to suit your preferences.
Unlike many other saltwater fly fishing destinations, Belize is fishable all year round. There is no wrong time to visit, with an average temperature of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and minimal temperature swing.
The most direct route from the UK to the fly fishing resorts in Belize is through the states, typically landing and overnighting in Miami. The following day it’s a direct flight from Miami to Belize, where the lodges’ staff will transfer you the rest of the way.
