Central America is a land bridge connecting the North and South American continents; it covers 521,876 square kilometres and consists of seven different countries, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. A central mountain chain dominates the interior from Mexico to Panama. Between the mountain ranges lie fertile valleys used to raise livestock, produce coffee, tobacco, beans, and other crops.
Both sides of Central America border the sea, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east; the coastline runs for over 2,200 square kilometres and is highly diverse, offering some fantastic blue water and saltwater fly fishing opportunities.
Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala are all famed for their big game, popper and jig fishing and provide some incredible sport fishing for all the billfish species, monster Tuna, Amberjack, Roosterfish and Snapper. The Hanibal bank is one of the most famous fishing spots in this area, an underwater plateau spanning an area of 15 square miles; it’s a prime feeding spot for all manner of different species.
Costa Rica, Belize and Mexico also offer some stunning saltwater fly fishing action, and you can find all the typical flats species of Tarpon, Snook, Bonefish and Permit in these destinations. They offer the saltwater fly fisherman a great chance to complete the grand slam and super slam challenge.
