Dogtooth Tuna Fishing Holidays Aggressive Predators

Customer Rating 96%

The 'White Tuna'

The Dogtooth Tuna, also known as the White Tuna, is a species of pelagic marine fish. It’s widespread throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific area and oceanic islands of the Pacific Ocean. Traditionally found in and around reef environments, they haunt deep reef drop-offs, seamounts and steep underwater walls. They’re most comfortable in depths of between 10m and 200m and swim in small schools or solitary.

They’re aggressive, opportunistic predators, feeding on small baitfish and squid. However, with a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth, they can take a range of prey items, including species much more significant than themselves. The Dogtooth Tuna is one of the apex non-pelagic predators, sharing this crown with species like Groupers, Napoleon wrasse and Giant Trevally. They can grow to enormous sizes, over two metres in length and weights of over 200lb. The IGFA record is a monster of over 236lb.

A little unknown fact is they are not technically a “true” Tuna but instead, they are the largest of the Bonitos. However, like Tuna, the Dogtooth is beautifully marked with blue-green and silver colourations. They’re also super streamlined and built for speed, possessing fantastic fighting qualities, making them a tremendous hard-fighting sport fish. They can be caught on all manner of different methods; however, poppers, lures and vertical jigs fished fast are some of the most exciting and explosive ways of catching them.

"Gts, Dogtooths, snappers, sharks and even hooked a Marlin. We all needed another holiday once we got back home. This is an extreme trip due to casting heavy poppers around and the jigging was arm aching stuff. The pre trip tackle list could do with updating as pink lures were working the best. Thank you and speak to later about getting some more dates "

"Rodrigues Island is a true bucket-list destination! It might take three days to travel there, but it was worth every minute of travelling time as the fishing was simply out of this world. The Hawkins bank must be one of the most productive fishing spots found anywhere in the world, it was truly sensational. "

"This is a once in a lifetime trip that you need to do more than once! It was a true adventure and surely one of the best fishing experiences on the planet. When you lower your baits, lures or jigs down to the bottom you generally have no idea what you'll catch next. All you know is whatever takes your bait, will be BIG! "
