The Giant Trevally is a species of large marine fish and is classified as part of the Jack family; it’s distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean region, and it inhabits a wide range of offshore and in-shore environments. Most commonly found in shallow coastal waters, including coral and rocky reefs, lagoons, channels and tidal flats. The fish maraud across the atolls and shallow estuaries, like packs of hoodlums, and the way they operate is nothing less than brutal. It’s easy to see why they’re known as the ‘Gangsters Of The Flats’.
A true apex predator in most of its habitats, the GT is an acute hunter, feeding individually and in schools. It feasts on a diet of crustaceans, cephalopods, molluscs and a range of baitfish; it’s also known to employ several novel hunting strategies, including shadowing monk seals to pick off escaping prey, as well as using sharks to ambush prey. Amazingly, footage released in 2017 on Blue Planet II revealed a group of fish hunting birds, specifically targeting fledgelings still learning to fly and adults unfortunate enough to pass low enough, allowing the fish to pounce on them.
The anglers first encounter with a Giant Trevally will be an electrifying experience; they can destroy tackle and ego, leaving all in their wake. They’re incredibly fast, mighty powerful and grow to enormous proportions. Fish to over 180lb have been recorded, and fish over 100lbs, especially around the Hawaiian Islands, are not uncommon. Once considered impossible to land on fly fishing tackle, they are becoming one of the top target species for saltwater fly fishing anglers.

"Our primary focus revolved around GT’s, Triggers, Bumpies but with Farquhar being Farquhar we could easily run into 100lb Naleon Wrasse, monster Barracuda, Golden Trevally and a host of others. I am pleased to report we found everything we were all looking for. A special mention has to go to the guide team who took such good care of the whole group."
"First week was hosted and had a great time and amazing fishing for GT's and some big Bonefish. However I stayed on for a second week on my own. On the second week without a host the guides less good. Also second week the weather was very intermittent. Overall another great trip to Christmas Island."
"Gts, Dogtooths, snappers, sharks and even hooked a Marlin. We all needed another holiday once we got back home. This is an extreme trip due to casting heavy poppers around and the jigging was arm aching stuff. The pre trip tackle list could do with updating as pink lures were working the best. Thank you and speak to later about getting some more dates"
