The Plaice, or European Plaice as it’s sometimes known, is a coldwater flatfish found off many coastlines, from the Barents Sea to the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic oceans. They are characterised by their dark green to dark brown skin, dotted with conspicuous but irregularly distributed orange spots; they are one of the sea anglers’ favourite little flatfish, both in sport and as a food fish.
Preferring sandy and muddy bottoms in depths between 10m and 50m, they feed on a diet of crustaceans, shrimps and worms. They average between 1lb to 2lb, but fish to 3lb plus aren’t uncommon, and in the cold waters of Norway and Iceland giants of over 6lb aren’t unusual. The record is a monster specimen of over 12lb.
Although not usually a species that sea fishing anglers travel to target alone, they’re a welcome change to the larger species like Cod and Halibut and a superb species to catch on light tackle. Despite being one of the smaller species found in European waters, they are an aggressive predator and, once hooked, put up an excellent account for themselves. They are also a fantastic eating fish and enjoyed across the continent. Fishing with simple one of two hook rigs, baited with either fish strips, worms or prawns, is one of the most effective ways of catching them. They are curious fish, so adding a bit of ‘bling’ to your rigs in the shape of beads or sequins can be a great tip to help catch more.
