Soroya Big Fish Adventure Norway The Land Of The Big Fish

Customer Rating 89%

The Land of The Big Fish: Mixed Sea Fishing, Sørøya, Norway

This is Sørøya, the Land of the Big Fish. Home to the world-record 104lb Cod, Halibut over two metres, and some of the most intense fishing beyond the Arctic Circle. Every drift here holds the chance of a lifetime.

Spring brings Skrei season. Migratory Cod flood in to spawn, brutal on the hit, heavy in the hand. Fish up to 70lb aren’t just possible, they’re expected. As summer arrives, Halibut take over. These giants crush shads in the shallows and baits on the drop. Two-metre specimens are landed every year.

Inshore, the island’s waters come alive. Coalfish blitz the surface. Plaice, Dabs, Wolffish, and Redfish add variety. Sørøya delivers size and volume in equal measure, a year-round destination built for anglers chasing scale and story.

You’ll fish from the camp’s Kaasbøll 660 self-drives or upgrade to the Apex Guide Boat for more comfort and a seasoned skipper on the helm.

Off the water, relax in modern, spacious cabins with optional catering and proper rest after long sessions on wild water. This is high-comfort accommodation to match the fishing.

Sportquest handle every detail. You focus on the fish.

If you want a shot at record-class Cod, metre-long Halibut, and big-water action in the Arctic, Sørøya is where your adventure begins.

Fishing Fishing

During your first two fishing days, after your briefing with the guides, you will be free to explore the waters off the coastline of the famous island of Soroya. This fantastic sea fishing destination is well-known for its fantastic mixed fishing for Cod, Coalfish, Plaice and Halibut – with the latter growing to some incredible sizes of over 2m.

Since you have your own boat, there is no time limit on how much or how little you can fish. Additionally, at certain times of the year, daylight remains uninterrupted for 24 hours, meaning you can fish around the clock if you wish.

Fishing Fishing

Hopefully, by fishing days three and four, you’re settled into driving the boats and finding the fish. It can be a challenge, but that’s half the fun: finding and fishing the array of different marks. There are numerous areas around Sørøya, ranging from close-in excellent Halibut marks to unexplored regions of the open ocean.

If, for any reason, you’re struggling to find the fish or the fishing marks, speak to one of the Big Fish Adventure team, as someone on-site may be able to point you in the right direction and offer some advice.

Fishing Fishing

On your last two fishing days and throughout your fishing week, you will wet a line from one of the camp’s Kaasbøll 660 aluminium boats. These vessels are spacious and very stable in rougher conditions. Yamaha F150 engines power them and come equipped with various electronics, including Garmin echoMAP 92s and the GT51-M transducer. With this rig, it’s possible to use regular sonar and both Downview and Sideview. The transducers also enable fishing down to depths of 300-400 meters.

Additionally, the boats feature Zipwake, a dynamic trim-control system that automatically calculates the boat’s weight shift and compensates for it accordingly. In practice, this means that the boat will remain correctly angled while driving, making the V-bottom work optimally.

Please note: There is a range of boats available, from the standard Kværnø 19ft models to the camp’s all-singing, all-dancing Apex Guide Boat. If you need help picking the perfect vessel, just ask a member of our team.

"As with all holidays in Northern Norway,Skrei fishing is weather dependant.
On our trip to Soroya we managed almost 3 of the planned 6. The fishing was good when the sea swell was light. We had one fish of 30 kilos on the boat which was a fish of a lifetime, many others over 12 / 15 kilos. We manages some good sized plaice at the harbour entrance on days when we couldn’t reach the Skrei grounds.
This trip we opted for an accommodation and boat upgrade, these properties on the actual harbour are fairly new and well worth considering as they are 100 mtrs from the boats. The Kassaboll boats are very good boats and compare favourably with the Nordic Aaronet boats.
Taking fish back to the U.K. for those who chose to do this can be problematic, due to the 20 minute transfer with Wideross to SAS. Luggage
delays can happen, usually delivered to your homes up to 4 days after returning home. Cool boxes do not travel well in my experience.
Another great trip tho!
Thankyou

"We arrived at hasvik airport with no problems.however when we got outside no one to meet us ! So we waited 20 minutes then a nice chap from the airport phoned ahmed for us but it was if he didn't know we were coming ? . And the next morning he took us to the hotel still no sign of a guide. So we rushed through the paper work and that was it. I don't blame Ahmed because he's the cook ! But a little bit of help from a guide would have been appreciated. Totally different from last year unfortunately."

"All in all a fantastic holiday. Sportquest were excellent, providing clear and detailed information in good time. All queries were answered quickly and professionally. Easy transfers meant we arrived on time with all our luggage (!) On arrival at Big Fish Adventure, we were collected from the airport and shown to our accommodation. The owners agreed to meet us at 09.30 the next morning to show us the facilities and get us fishing. They did mention they had 29 guests arrive all at the same time and only had 2 staff, instead of the usual 4. We were ready at 09.30 but they did not get to us until 11.00 which was frustrating. The same thing happened when we had our day with the guide, meaning we lost a bit of fishing time. We had a quick tour of the boat, but were not shown where to get lifejackets, how to us the 'go-fish' catch reporting system, or given much detail on the boat. The auto-trim on the boat did not work which was frustrating, and part of the windshield was smashed. The boat also has had an 'essential maintenance needed' warning flashing which was concerning. However it did not feel unsafe and worked well all week, other than listing to the right due to the trim.
The accommodation was clean, warm and comfy, but the apartment we stayed in could do with a lick of paint. Little things like a broken toilet seat let it down a touch. The staff were really helpful and friendly, special mention to Trym who worked really hard to help us get on the fish, recommend tackle and knots, and answer our numerous questions!
The only other issue was the harbour running out of fuel, we had to motor all the way to Breivikbotn to fill up, not anyone's fault but a pain.
The fishing was amazing, we caught everywhere we went, and managed 5 halibut between the 2 of us during the week. The cod, coalfish and haddock were around in huge numbers. We also saw some wonderful wildlife including humpback whales on several days.
We had a great time, I hope the above is seen as constructive criticism rather than moaning as it did not spoil a wonderful trip. "

Accommodation

The accommodation for this trip is the camp’s deluxe apartments, undoubtedly some of the finest you will find in Norway. Each house features two floors, measuring 86 square meters, and has six beds distributed across three bedrooms. On the first floor, you have two bedrooms, a bathroom with a sauna and a washing and drying room. The first floor also features a terrace where you can sit and enjoy the stunning views.

Upstairs, there’s an open kitchen and living room with full glass frontage, offering a jaw-dropping view across the fjord. There’s also a large balcony, the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee. The kitchen features a cooker, dishwasher, fridge with a small freezer, coffee machine, microwave, and more. There is also a bathroom and a bedroom on the second floor.

One fantastic feature of these accommodations is that they are just metres from the boats.

Food & Drink

The cabins are solely self-catering, meaning that you will be cooking your food whilst enjoying your stay. If you need any additional food or supplies, a local supermarket is available. If you didn’t want to cook every night and fancied eating out, the camp also has a hotel with a restaurant just a short walk away, and it’s also possible to arrange a full-board package.

Where Dreams Come True

The island of Soroya is the fourth largest in Norway and is famed for its beauty, stunning landscapes and incredible fishing opportunities. A name well known in the sea fishing community, it’s home to some of the best fishing found anywhere in the country; labelled ‘Land Of The Big Fish’, it truly is a destination where dreams can come true. It offers travelling anglers the chance to experience the sea fishing holiday of a lifetime.

Primarily renowned for its incredible spring Skrei Cod fishery, which develops annually each spring, and the proud home to the largest ever rod and reel caught fish of 103lb, it deserves every accolade. But the island offers so much more. Through the years, it has developed into a true ‘all-year-round’ destination, allowing anglers to enjoy some incredible mixed fishing. As well as the Skrei Cod, there’s the opportunity to fish for giant Halibut, which grow to sizes of well over 2m in length, colossal Coalfish, dustbin lid-sized Plaice and deep water Wolffish and Redfish. The island’s cold arctic waters are rich with food, and fish populations are abundant, attracting anglers from around the globe wishing to sample the fantastic fishing on offer.

If you’d like to learn more about the incredible fishing opportunities on the famous island of Soroya, head to our YouTube channel.

Best Time To Visit

The best time of year to visit and fish in Soroya will depend on what you wish to catch. In the early part of the year, around the spring months of March and April, the Skrei Cod reign supreme and the camp is almost exclusively packed with anglers targeting these incredible specimens. Fish of monstrous proportions – 60lb, 70lb, and even 80lb are not unusual. If you’re fishing for the Skrei Cod in Soroya and would like to learn more, we have a dedicated blog available here: Preparing For Skrei Cod Fishing.

As the Skrei Cod carry on their migratory route and as spring morphs into summer, a change in the weather brings a change in the fishing. Even though good numbers of resident Cod are still around the island, many visiting anglers turn their attention to other species, mainly Halibut.* Soroya is well known as a fantastic destination for these giant flatfish and every year produces some extraordinary results, with some huge specimens of over two metres in length.

In addition to Halibut, the inshore waters around the island come alive with hard-fighting Coalfish and dustbin lid-sized Plaice. Further offshore, the deeper marks produce some specimen Wolffish and excellent numbers of Redfish.

Additional Tours To Soroya

If you’ve always dreamt of fishing on the famous island of Soroya in northern Noway, as well as our standard weeks, we also offer two others. One is fishing for the Skrei Cod during the early part of the season, and the other is an all-inclusive VIP Package, the ultimate trip for those looking for the very best. You can see more details about each of them by clicking the links below:

Skrei Cod Soroya Norway
Luxury All-Inclusive Sea Fishing Norway

*Please note that, by Norwegian law, you’re not allowed to intentionally target and catch Halibut until the 20th of April each year.

Fantastic Mixed Fishing

Soroya is famous for three main species: Cod, Halibut and Coalfish. However, many other species are also on offer, including Haddock, Wolffish, Dabs and Plaice.

Resident Cod can be caught all year round, with fish between 10lb and 40lb common, with even bigger specimens landed every season, especially during the Skrei Cod run. When targeting these, we recommend looking for fish-holding features such as underwater pinnacles with deep areas on either side. All fishing gets done on the drift, and the primary tactic is to use a large rubber shad, something like a Savage Gear Cut Bait Herring, lowered to the bottom and then fished a few turns off it.

Halibut fishing has been excellent, and more fish are landed every season. Once again, shads and spin fishing are fantastic tactics for these famous giant flatfish, but so is dead baiting. A popular method is a medium-sized Coalfish or Mackerel dead bait fished on an anti-twist lead.

From April onwards, good numbers of Coalfish begin to appear, with specimens of over 20lb not unusual. These are generally willing to smash anything presented to them. In the right conditions, they can also get caught in the upper layers and even on surface poppers, providing some fantastic action.

Close to the camp, many of the intimate bays offer anglers the chance to target Plaice and Dabs. These are best targeted using flowing traces or flapper rigs with smaller hooks, baited with frozen prawns.

Fishing Boats In Soroya

For this Soroya package, we use the camp’s popular boat, the Kaasbøll 660 Fisker.*

The Kaasbøll 660 is a powerful aluminium boat that is fantastic for fishing. It is spacious and very stable in rougher conditions. Thanks to its slight V-hull and relatively flat Kiel, it can be highly effective in bigger waves when driven correctly. They are powered by Yamaha F150 engines and come equipped with various electronics, including Garmin echoMAP 92s and the GT51-M transducer. With this rig, it’s possible to use regular sonar and both Downview and Sideview. The transducers also allow fishing down to 300-400 meters.

In addition, the boats feature Zipwake, a dynamic trim-control system that automatically calculates the boat’s weight shift and compensates for it. In practice, this means that the boat will remain correctly angled while driving, making the V-bottom work optimally. In addition, the system has an excellent and reliable automatic mode, so you don’t have to trim it manually.

*Please note that a range of boats are available, from the standard Kværnø 19 FT models to the camps’ all-singing, all-dancing Apex Guide Boat. If you need help picking the perfect boat for you, you can read our blog: Sea Fishing In Soroya – Picking The Perfect Boat For Your Holiday.

Totally different from last year unfortunately.

Fantastic trip, we caught plenty of fish and the BFA resort was superb. After speaking to Bilal I think we'd definitely like to return for the Skrei Cod at some point.

All in all a fantastic holiday.

Response from Sportquest Holidays

Hi James, thank you so much for your feedback. We never take anyones feedback as moaning, its always taken as constructive and is very important to us that we know what is happening onsite. We do visit most of our locations but normally only once or twice so, yes its important that we get these feedbacks so we can act on them accordingly. I shall speak to the owners to see what they have to say

Well done on the fishing 5 halibut is a great result and to see the Humpbacks is an experience on its own

All the best

Paul

Mortimer and whitehouse gone fishing Norway Christmas special

Mortimer And Whitehouse Norway Christmas Special

We were exceptionally proud to be involved with the Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing Christmas Special to Norway in 2022. Being the first time the programme had ventured outside the UK, it took a tremendous amount of work to produce the itinerary and cater for the thirteen-strong production team, but it was a fantastic couple of weeks away. If you enjoyed the programme, here is more information on Paul and Bob's trip and the itinerary it followed.

Aa-gård Lavangen Norway

Aa-gård fishing camp is situated in Lavangen, in Troms og Finnmark county, in northern Norway. Thanks to the protection from the surrounding mountains and topography, the destination is almost one hundred percent' weatherproof' - whatever the weather, it's possible to fish nearly every day of the year.

Mikkelvik Brygge Norway

Mikkelvik Brygge is protected by the large islands of Rebbenesøya and its smaller neighbour Hersoya. As a result, the coastal waters close to the camp are generally calm, whatever the weather and very few fishing days get lost throughout the season. It's famed for its Skrei Cod fishing, as well as its fantastic Halibut and Plaice fishing.

Seiland House Rognsund Norway

Rognsund, located in Rognsundet in the southwestern part of Seiland, is Norway's eighth most significant island and the second-largest in Finnmark, behind only Sørøya. A beautiful island destination, the sheltered waters are home to abundant numbers of Cod, Halibut, Wolffish, Ling, Redfish, and some of the very best fishing spots get found within a stone's throw of the camp.

Båtsfjord Brygge Norway

When staying and fishing at Båtsfjord Brygge, you will soon get immersed in the full beauty and experience of Norway’s Finnmark coast. Situated at the end of the sheltered Båtsfjord inlet, the accommodation is just a stone’s throw away from some of the best fishing spots, which have a deep history of producing some giant Cod, Halibut and Coalfish.

Soroya, Norway’s fourth-largest island, lies far north inside the Arctic Circle and is famed for its dramatic scenery and record-breaking fishing. Known as the ‘Land of the Big Fish’, it holds the Norwegian record for the largest rod-caught Cod at 103lb and offers year-round fishing for Halibut, Coalfish, and more.
Fishing at Soroya Big Fish Adventure is legendary due to its cold Arctic waters, rich with food and big fish populations. Each spring, Skrei Cod migrate in vast numbers, while summer brings world-class Halibut and Coalfish action. The combination of species variety and fish size makes Soroya a true dream destination for sea anglers.
The Soroya fishing season runs from March to October. March and April are prime for giant Skrei Cod, while May to September produce superb Halibut, Plaice, and Coalfish. For anglers chasing variety, July to September offers the best all-round action with calmer seas and 24-hour daylight.
The waters around Soroya are teeming with life. Target species include Skrei Cod, Halibut, Coalfish, Plaice, Redfish, Haddock, and Wolffish.
Most fishing at Big Fish Adventure Soroya is done on the drift using large rubber shads like the Savage Gear Cutbait Herring, fished just off the bottom. For Halibut, dead-baiting with Coalfish or Mackerel is also highly effective, while Plaice and Dabs are best targeted with smaller hooks and flowing traces baited with prawns.
Anglers fish from the powerful Kaasbøll 660 Fisker aluminium boats, fitted with Yamaha F150 engines and Garmin echoMAP 92s electronics. The advanced Zipwake trim system automatically balances the boat, ensuring stability and safety even in rougher conditions — ideal for fishing deep marks up to 400m.
Guests stay in deluxe two-storey apartments right beside the harbour. Each feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private sauna, and a large glass-fronted living area overlooking the fjord. A fully equipped kitchen and balcony make them some of the finest fishing lodges in Norway.
The apartments are self-catering with a well-equipped kitchen, and a supermarket nearby provides easy access to supplies. For those who prefer dining out, the onsite hotel restaurant serves local seafood dishes, and a full-board upgrade can be arranged on request.
Travelling to Soroya is straightforward and well-organised. After flying into Tromsø and connecting to Hasvik, guests are met by a representative from Big Fish Adventure and transferred directly to their deluxe apartments — just minutes from the harbour, ensuring a smooth start to the fishing week.
Few places in Norway can match Soroya for consistent big-fish action. From Skrei Cod exceeding 60lb to Halibut over 2m long, the island’s record-breaking reputation is backed by luxury accommodation, expert support, and stunning Arctic scenery — a truly bucket-list destination for sea anglers.
