Jardines de la Reina, or JDR as it’s known, is a pristine chain of islands that run more than one hundred and sixty kilometres to the northwest from Cuba’s southeastern coast. Named the Queen’s Gardens by Christopher Columbus, this vast area is a marine paradise, more significant than the Florida Keys and a designated Cuban National Park. With no human habitation and with the waters protected from any commercial fishing for several decades, this vast expanse of saltwater wilderness offers some of the best and most varied fly fishing found anywhere in the world. The fish across the whole of JDR receive very little pressure; no more than a few dozen anglers can fish the entire fishery on any given week and, as a result, are more likely to cooperate and eat a fly.
The flats environment at Jardines de la Reina is a fantastic combination of wadable white sand and turtle grass flats home to a host of flats species. Alongside the migratory Tarpon, you can expect Bonefish, Permit and just about every other fish species that one might expect to catch in the Caribbean – Snapper, Jacks, Shark, Barracudas alongside blue-water species that patrol the reef. Jardines de la Reina is one destination where travelling saltwater fly anglers will have an excellent chance of completing the famed Grand Slam, and over the past five or so years, it’s been completed numerous times.
For saltwater fly fishing for a mixture of species, there are few better places in the Caribbean and even the world than Jardines de la Reina. For many travelling anglers, the migratory Tarpon is the biggest draw, and over the prime months of March to June, vast numbers of silver specimens populate the flats and estuaries. Good sized Permits are also catchable all year round, and thousands and thousands of Bonefish spread over all areas.
The fishing in JDR gets divided into three zones, A, B and C. Your yacht, or liveaboard accommodation, will be allocated a specific zone that ensures individual areas don’t get overfished on any given week. You’ll also be guaranteed exclusivity within that area. With very little angling pressure, only a dozen rods per week, the fish usually are very cooperative and readily eat a well-presented fly.
All the zones have a wide range of fishable water ranging from shallow lagoons for Bonefish, mangrove channels for juvenile Tarpon, and open flats for hunting Permits and migratory Tarpon. Also, to the South, a natural coral barrier reef protects the white sandy beaches and shelters firm bottomed flats that are ideal for both wading and fishing from a skiff. All the fishing at Jardines de la Reina is now fly-only, part of even stricter conservation measures to ensure that the areas continue to thrive as a marine sanctuary.
At Jardines de la Reina the fishing is varied, and anglers who are travelling to fish its rich, crystal clear waters can expect all the traditional flats species, as well as a whole host of bluewater species.
Tarpon are unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging of all the game fish that you might catch on a fly rod, and there’s no doubt that Jardines de la Reina has some of the best-sighted flats Tarpon fishing available in the World. The destination is renowned for its juvenile fishery, fish in the 15lb to 40lb class, and can be spectacular, and it’s not unusual for anglers to catch between ten and fifteen of these in a single day. Bigger specimens up to 85lb and even some topping the magical 100lb mark are not uncommon, especially in the months of late spring and summer. These fish are powerful and acrobatic, and during the duration of a battle with anglers, they will regularly launch themselves clear of the water in a bid to shake the hook.
Bonefish, also known as the ghosts of the flats, are the most abundant widespread and popular out of all the flats species and offer fantastic sport on a fly rod. Although some saltwater fly-fishermen may consider Bonefish the ‘starter’ species, they are at the same time one of the most refined. When hooked in shallow water, they will run with a force and vigour that will challenge the confidence you have in your fishing gear. Bones average 3lb to 4lb, but you may see much larger fish on some flats, with many in the 6lb to 8lb range with a few large fish to over 12lb.
These are some of the most fickle yet rewarding of all saltwater game fish. Typically identified by their protruding coal-black forked tails, good-sized Permit are residents at the Jardines de la Reina and in decent numbers. ‘Florida sized’ Permit between 25lb and 35lb regularly get caught and provide anglers with a real challenge. They, along with the Tarpon and Bonefish, also form part of the famous ‘Grand Slam’, which is possible every day of the week when fishing at JDR.
Whilst these species are not considered the primary saltwater game fish, the flats, creeks, channels and reefs are abundant with them, and they can provide fantastic sport mixed in amongst the more traditional flats fish. Keeping your nerve and not striking too early as a Barracuda launches from 10-20ft at a surface popper is quite a test. Equally, to encounter the brute strength of Jack Crevalle during a feeding spree or sight-fishing for them on the flats is a fantastic experience.
Jardines de la Reina is ideal for fly-fisherman who wish to live and experience fishing from dawn till dusk, as at JDR, they offer more fishing hours than any other destination, and the fishing hours are totally at the discretion of the angler.
A regular day usually begins with a hearty breakfast around 7.00am before departing with your guides at around 7.45am. Most of the flats get found close to the accommodation, and in most cases, you can often have a fly in the water fifteen minutes after setting off for the day.
After fishing all morning and with the accommodation so close, it’s common to head back for lunch, escaping the hottest of the midday sun and relaxing for an hour before heading back out for the afternoon. In Jardines, the morning winds often calm down in the afternoons, and fishing in the late afternoon can be superb, especially for Bonefish.
On some of the more remote flats, further than 15 minutes from the accommodation, the guides will often suggest the evening before that you take a packed lunch and stay out all day. There are no gasoline limits for the guides, so if you wish, you can motor out longer distances to the flats further afield, and this can often yield some of the best, most explosive sport.
Typically, wherever you’re fishing, you’ll return to the accommodation early evening, after the witching hour, as this can often be very productive. Once back at base and after you’ve relaxed and showered, you’ll be served some dinner, with fine cuisine, fresh fish, lobster and conch, as well as a variety of salad and fruits, washed down with a selection of world-class wines, rum and beer.

When fishing in Cuba, there’s a wide range of accommodation available for travelling anglers to stay in, many of which are quality, modern liveaboards. The leading boat used in all standard packages is the Avalon IV, which is permanently moored at Jardines de la Reina and makes for the perfect base for anglers to travel from each day. However, for those who would like to organise a private group of travelling anglers or who’d like a different, more flexible package, then a wide range of vessels are available. These work as true liveaboards and are not permanently moored; they roam the marine paradise and remove much of the travelling between the accommodation and fishing grounds each day. These other vessels are available on request and you can find out more information on each, by clicking the boat name below…

Over the past decade, to ensure the ultimate comfort and luxury, Jardines de la Reina has consistently upgraded their accommodation fleet, and in August 2020, it released the Jardines Avalon IV.
The former static Tortuga developed a strong following as a floating hotel in JDR, and many divers, eco adventurers and anglers have called this special place home for weeks on end, enjoying the classic comforts of this Cuban vessel. However, it was time for the Tortuga to end its time and be replaced with the ultra-modern Avalon IV which now provides you with even more luxury and home comforts for you to enjoy.
This fantastic 180-foot vessel is now permanently moored in Jardines de la Reina and features 20 staterooms, a spacious lounge, a modern dining room, and a sun deck to enjoy every aspect of the Gardens of the Queen. In addition, each room has personalized air conditioning and heating controls, ample storage space, and convertible double beds.
The Jardines Avalon IV is now the perfect base of operations for a week of fly fishing and experiencing the pristine nature of the surroundings.
The helm deck includes four suites with balconies and a delightful jacuzzi and sun deck to enjoy the incredible views. The upper deck comprises eight double rooms with private bathrooms and a lovely dining area and rear patio.
The main deck includes another eight double rooms, a comfortable lounge area with large couches, and is also the main entrance area to the yacht and features a massive rear deck and platform to keep all of your gear organized and access easy. The lower deck is where the crew resides, along with the engine room powering this incredible vessel.
The food and drink on the vessel are as luxurious as the accommodation itself. Menus are wide-ranging with local and western cuisine; however, the chefs onboard are renowned for their delicious fresh fish, lobster and conch dishes, accompanied by a wide range of vegetables and salad.
A wide range of soft drinks and beer is available, and a selection of house wines gets served with every evening meal. Spirits don’t get included, but it’s effortless to pick up a bottle from the airport on your journey, and the staff will be more than happy to provide you with great rum cocktails.
Although the fishing days are fixed, the below itinerary is still flexible should you require additional free days to explore at the beginning or end of your holiday; we can tailor this itinerary to suit you personally. Sorry for the delay, but thanks for arranging a great holiday. I travelled alone but met some great people mainly italians on the trip. Everything ran like clock work plus I caught more fish than I had hoped for.
Peter, glad to receive such good feedback and so happy to assist you in a great holiday. Look forward in organising your next one. Regards Peter
We stayed on the Tortuga and we had the whole boat to the 10 of us. Also on 3 days they gave us 2 extra guides so we could do some single skiff fishing. Everyone had plenty of action... some more than others as some can cast better than others... Tony... Lost some real monster Tarpon, but thats the perfect excuse to return.
Simon as if you guys need an excuse? was great talking to you on the phone, you guys sure have some fishing stories to tell. I will have to join you all one year as the fishing company sounds like a great laugh. I will check availability for you as discussed and get back to you soon. Rgds Peter
Thank you to all the guides for taking good care of us all. I got a Tarpon to stick and stay on in the end. I think i was driving the guides mad but they never showed it. Great fun, see you next time.
Rich, I bet that was a relief in the end, they do take some getting used to. Its all about setting the hook correctly and giving them line when they jump. Send me the pictures as I would love to see and use some of them please. Same time same place for next year? Cheers Peter
We both had a fantastic break, everyone worked so hard. We did have an engine breakdown on the third day which, we only got 3 hours fishing, but to make up for it we then had 2 days in a single skiff each which was a very nice touch. Would we go back? Oh yes please.
Sorry to hear about the engine problems, however glad to see that they did everything they could within their powers to make it up to you both.
6 very happy anglers and 6 very unhappy partners for as soon as we got home we told them we are going back.... Divorce.com
Oh Darren not sure if thats a good thing or note? Glad that you, Tom and the rest of your team had a good one. I will sort out the dates and get back to you.... so see you in court then. Peter
Thanks for organising our little group, the Halcon was perfect for us and we loved being close to the fishing. Cheers David
David, as alway it was a pleasure, I know you guys never go back to the same place twice so where now? I will give you a call. Thanks again Peter
I've been a fisherman since the age of eight, and I am now almost fifty-nine. Fishing has been an essential part of life; I no longer have much hair, but scales have appeared where the hair used to be! However, despite a lifetime of fishing, this has consisted mainly of coarse fishing and, to a lesser extent, sea fishing. Fly fishing of any sort has not featured in my piscatorial life, and sea fly fishing only entered my thoughts when watching Rex Hunt on TV. Since then, it had always been in the back of my mind to try it, but never knew anybody who had a similar frame of mind with whom I could share the experience.
That was until 2008, when, in the course of business, I visited Mike Clark. On entering his smoke filled office, and making my way through the smog to where I assumed his desk to be, the first thing that caught my attention was the wallpaper photo on his laptop. The photo showed Mike cradling a huge brown trout, and in the background there were snow-capped mountains and dense forests. Being fairly intelligent, I immediately recognised that the trout was not caught from the local Hanningfield Reservoir, in Essex!! I was told that the trout came from a lake in Chile. Thoughts of business immediately disappeared and talk of fishing ensued.
Eventually we did get around to talking business, and I found that I had to return to Mike the following week in order to provide some information he had requested. On entering the office for the second time, the first words that left Mike's mouth were "Do you fancy joining us on a fishing trip?" "Where to?" asked I, "and what type of fishing?" "Cuba" was the reply, "and fly fishing is the preferred method, although you can use any method you like, including lures".
So it was, that in 2008, this novice fly fisherman first travelled to Cuba in pursuit of Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit and whatever else he could entice from the Caribbean! The plan that year was to go to Jardines de la Reina, however, Hurricane Paloma also decided to go there, so after a quick bit of soft shoe shuffle by Jack, the venue was altered to Cayo Largo.
It was great!! Plenty of fish, especially Bonefish, but also Snapper of various types. Hooked a Tarpon, but never landed it! That wasn't important; what was important was that I had found somewhere to fish that was virtually untouched. The environment was pristine, was silent, was vast, was warm, was blue, was green,.... was mine. I was so taken with the Cuba experience, that I had to do it again last year! This time we would attempt Jardines again, and without a hurricane in sight, left the little port of Jucaro on the good ship Halcon to spend the next week afloat on the Caribbean, in the mangrove paradise of Jardines de la Reina. My fly fishing, though less than impressive, does catch fish, and plenty of them! On this occasion, I did catch the elusive Tarpon. Not massive by Tarpon standards; the best I had was about 25lb, but on a fly rod and reel you know that you've got a fight on your hands!! In fact, I caught three Tarpon, and I was more than happy with that. I don't think I have ever hooked a more powerful fish. Beautiful fish, solid silver and with attitude. In addition to the muscle aching Tarpon there were the Bonefish, Snappers and a mini Permit. Now lads, it's often said that size doesn't matter, and when it came to this Permit, apparently it doesn't! Despite being only a small version of its' elders, that Permit, when coupled with the Tarpon and Bonefish, produces a Grand Slam!! Yes! I did the Slam!! On just my second attempt at sea fly fishing, and not yet being of a very high standard, I could apply for a certificate and membership of the Game Fishing Association!(or whatever it's called!).
Other fish were not in short supply either, and I managed any number of Barracuda on lures. Not massive 'Cuda; biggest probably around 15lb, but I was shaken to the boots when a shark rose from the depths to lunge at a hooked 'Cuda that was only a few feet from me! That shark was huge and would have gone into the hundreds of pounds! If I had hooked the fish, I would still be playing it! Thankfully, the lunge missed the 'Cuda, and despite a failed second attempt, the luckiest Barracuda in the Caribbean was able to be landed, and returned to the water unscathed!
But what of the accommodation? The Halcon was teriffic! A modern vessel with all mod cons. The cabin was of good size, and organised every day by Amarylis, the only female crew member. Food was of a high standard and presented in a very professional way. Not unreasonably, fish does feature largely on the menu, but not exclusively! After a few drinks and informative chat with other group members recalling their days' exploits, it's time for bed. The hard days' toil of fighting all those fish certainly worked like a sedative for me! I've never slept so well!
Up again in the morning, breakfast, and back into the skiff for another day in paradise. The guides are unbelievable. My eyesight is good, but they manage to see fish in water that looks totally devoid of anything! How they do it is beyond me, but they have years of experience behind them, and it certainly shows! I've learned many things on these trips, but probably the most important is to trust your guide; he knows what he is talking about!
And I look forward to keep learning and improving! I expect to be on the November trip this year. Can't wait! This type of fishing holday does not come cheap, but when was cheap, the best!?
Try it; you know you're worth it!
See you on board!
Barry Hatton
Barry, thanks for such a great report and feedback, it always helps us and customers to see real customers reviews. Plus remember that EVER permit counts so congratulations on your slam. Regards peter
Sportquest thanks for organising you group.
The fishing at Jardines de la Reina is out of this world.
The fishing area is so vast and I do not think we went back to the same area ever.
What a destination for the big three, bones, tarpon and permit.
First class guides and whole operation
Nigel
Thanks for the review and talking to us on your return.
It was a pleasure and we are so happy that it all lived up to expectations.
PS Amazing pictures thank you for the copies.
Do not normally bother with feedback
However this trip was so well organised and conducted I felt compelled to send it in.
First a massive thank you to you and all your staff for recommended the destination as you were spot on as it did suit us all perfectly.
Secondly a massive thank you to all the staff and guides, they took such good care over us all and nothing was too much effort.
We are already talking about planning a return visit.
David, I really appreciate you taking the time to complete the feedback and for talking to me on the telephone on your return.
So happy that you all enjoy the trip I knew you would. I have fished there many times and have always loved every trip.
I look forward in looking after you all again soon.

We opted to stay on the Tortuga at Jardines de la Reina which proved perfect for our group of 10.
The group was a real mix of experience but the guides took very good care of everyone. The fishing was also suitable for all levels.
We would highly recommend this destination for all levels.
A special thank you to Peter at Sportquest, great job in sorting this out for us as I know how difficult it is dealing with 10 guys, all different questions and all wanting different things.
Albert thanks for the mention, Only doing my job but so nice for you to say such nice words.
Yes I agree thats why we recommended this destination as it has something for everyone.
I was no issue looking after you all, in fact it was a pleasure and look forward in doing it all again soon.

Being a lady angler I was a little concerned about booking a trip that would consist of mainly men.
I opted for one of the weeks that had Sportquest customers already booked on as they invited me to join them. Everyone was so nice and i felt a bit like the centre of attention.
We all had a marvellous weeks fishing, perfect weather and perfect company.
I would return in a flash.
Helen, was great catching up with you on the phone.
They are a great bunch of customers and so glad they made you feel special....
Congrats on your fish as it looks like you had a ball, yes you did have perfect weather and you surely made the most of it.
Talk again soon

I think we have all fallen in love with Cuba.
Such a warm country and people, everyone has a smile.
All of the guides and staff on the boat could not do enough for us all. So nice these days to get treatment that made us all feel so special.
The only criticism we could mention is with the guides they get very excited / upset whenever we missed a chance at permit of big tarpon. Apart from that perfection in every way.
William we all fall in love with Cuba my friend.
Thanks for the feedback and as I mentioned on the phone, I agree with you and it is something we have mentioned a few times that the guides should contain any frustrations when we ALL mess up a cast or two or three.
Its bad enough messing up chance to then have a the guide mustering away in Spanish behind you. So sorry for that and I will bring this up again with the operators.
This was our forth trip with Sportquest to Jardine de la Reina, this time we had some tough weather for 4 days.
This trip really did some the expertise of the guides for they still managed to find and put us on fish everyday. Ok not so many fish as pervious trips but considering the awful weather it was a major success.
Peter, thanks for sorting everything as normal, can we loo at same dates for next year for 10.
Stu, thanks foe the call back. Shame this time the weather was no kind, these thing do happen and lucky enough all you guys are experienced enough to understand this.
Also as well travelled guys you also know with the guides how to make the most out of difficult fishing conditions.
Glad you still all had a great time. I have sent you dates for next year but 1 week later as the tides will be better for you.
Let me know what you think
We have just returned from a week on the Tortuga in Cuba saltwater fly fishing.
I write for us all to send our thanks for a very well organised trip from beginning to end.
It was a real pleasure in dealing with such a professional company and we can all see why Sportquest is expanding. (We just hope that you can also keep the personal touch as it is very important)
Between us we have used probably all other companies but we all agreed over a few cocktails on the return that you stand well above the rest and as such I do not think we would ever consider using your competitors again.
We are sure that we will all be talking to you again very soon.
Henry & team
Henry
Let me say for both myself and all the staff a huge thank you for such kind words they meant a lot to us all.
Everyone has worked so hard over these last few years and we also believe that we have lifted the bar in relation to tour operators specialising in fishing holidays.
Do not worry, yes we are expanding at a very quick rate, but I am making sure that we are constantly increasing and training new staff to cope with the work load.
Also so ensure we do not lose the personal touch, you will always deal when it comes to booking and talking about destinations with the same staff member so in your case that will be me.
I look forward in dealing with you all again soon and I will keep you informed of all hosted group trips that come up as you requested.
Again thanks you
Regards
This trip was as usual a pleasurable experience. Our stay in the Parque Central Hotel was a good start and end to the trip. We prefer this hotel because of it's situation in old Havana area.
It was very noticeable that there were many more US tourists in the city than previous years.
The fishing in Jardines de la Reina was not it's best but this was mainly due to the cold front which came through the area. Obviously this was out of everyone's control.
Everyone in the party had some good fishing days and an enjoyable time on the boat.
It was noticeable that some of the Avalon infrastructure is getting a bit tired.
There where engine problems on the Halcon mainly caused by lack of servicing.
However that should be rectified by now.
Overall another enjoyable trip.
David
Thank you for your feedback form and also taking the time to talk on the telephone. I know only to well how frustrating fishing can be when the weather is against us. Having said that it was good to see that the whole group kept up their spirits and enjoyed the whole trip.
Lets talk and plan something again for next year, call me when you are free.
Regards Peter
My third trip, a very long trek, but paradise when you arrive.
Fishing is great, the guides are outstanding, polite, patient and so much fun.
The group makes the holiday with apres fishing inquests going on deep into the night rum assisted.
Ha John
Thanks for the feedback and it was so nice to talk to you on the telephone. It is a shame this hosted trip is no longer available in Cuba due to all the changes as it has over the years been a huge success.
I am sure we will sort something out with David soon tho.
I have seen some of the pictures of the group after a few to many drinks very funny.
So glad you all had another great time and I look forward in looking after you all again soon.

Best part: fishing in fantastic water, lots of Bonefish!
Meet and greet at airport could be improved.
Ian
Thanks for chatting on the phone and for completing the customer feedback as it is all welcome.
Glad you enjoyed the trip and also caught plenty of Bonefish which is now your new favourite species.
The meet & greet is not great in Cuba and we wish very much we could get it improved. However you will find the next trip to Christmas Island will be much better.
great food, guides and fishing. We will make sure you catch lots of Bonefish plus much much more.

Great trip, great bunch, we will be back next year again please.
Thanks Mark, I have pencilled you both in and look forward to next years pictures. Mel
It was my birthday while fly fishing in Cuba this year. I celebrated it with 2 x Tarpon: 1st fish 50 lbs, 2nd fish 25 lbs.
The memory will stay with me the rest of my life.
Many thanks Sportquest for a great holiday :-)
Andy
It was a pleasure and I did not realise it was your birthday while you where all out there, otherwise I would have arranged for a cake to be on the boat :)
Glad you celebrated it in style as normal.
Thank you again for your custom, lets hope the job front improves then we can look at sorting something again soon.
Good luck and keep in touch
Regards Peter
Another very enjoyable trip to Cuba, my second with Sportquest holidays.
Being a single angler, the hosted trips offer an opportunity for me to fish without having to pay the single supplement each time.
This trip was particularly enjoyable, as the live aboard meant there were no lengthy bus journeys to the boats each morning.
The mother ship was very comfortable, food excellent and the crew very pleasant company and willing to help wherever possible.

Thanks for chatting on the phone and for the customer feedback.
So happy that you enjoyed your second trip with us to Cuba, we have many other destinations that we can look after you as a single angler.
Give me a call when you are free and we can look at options for next year.
PS Thank you for your continued custom as it is very much appreciated and we could not do this job with out people like you.
Regards Peter
This was my first Fishing holiday to Cuba and my first attempt to catch Tarpon on Fly tackle as I normally fish the Florida Keys during the May Tarpon migration using Spinning tackle.
The organisation of Sportsquest and Jack Simpson was excellent. Accommodation in Havana (Capri Hotel) was good, but the bus journey to Jucaro port was early 3.15 am and long 8hrs. Then a 4 1/2 hr boat journey to fishing grounds, so limited fishing first day.
I was lucky and had a single cabin on Halcon which was very nice, the double rooms however looked very cramped. Staff on board were brilliant as was the food.
Fishing was good but not amazing. Light winds and clear sky on the first day meant catches were best then. The wind picked up on day 2 and for the rest of the week 15-20mph and many of the tarpon moved offshore and flats fishing became more difficult.
The Tarpon were small resident fish up to about 20Ib, in reasonable numbers - average 2/3 shots per day per person. Bonefish were in large numbers in the Muds or smokes but fewer on the flats. Only saw 2 permit.
The restriction to fly only was disappointing, I enjoy all methods and when one gets difficult then why not try something else? I had acquired spinning tackle which all had to be left at home due to late notice of change in policy.
After the trip to JDR I stopped off at Las Salinas for a couple of days where I felt the Bonefishing was better on the vast flats but there were no Tarpon in the shallow water.
I thoroughly enjoyed the trip thank you and achieved my goal of a Tarpon on the Fly!

It was great catching up with you on the telephone and also thank you for the feedback as it is very much appreciated.
I am sorry about the long transfer this was due to a fault with one of the boat engines meaning the boat was running with only 1 engine which resulted in twice as much time to arrive at your destination.
As discussed it is a shame Cuba changed things around so now you can not use spin tackle when the weather is against us for fly fishing. As mentioned we have lots of alternative destinations for next year where this is not an issue.
Keep looking g out for the new hosted trip we talked about and we might even get the chance to fish together.
Kind Regards Peter
I have always loved Cuba, another great trip the only question now is what to do next.
Have to give it some serious thought.

Think about a place where you can fish more than 100 miles of flats without seeing another fisherman. A place where the flats fishing is so good, you can catch seven fish species in one day and a place where you have a legitimate chance for a ‘Grand Slam’ every day of the year; that’s Canarreos.
Bluewater Fishing Panama offers travelling anglers the chance to enjoy a fantastic week of mixed fishing for an array of hard-fighting species. The Maldives Liveaboard trip allows travelling rods to experience some of the most exciting and explosive bluewater fishing in the world, casting poppers and jigs to some of the most remote areas of the Laamu Atoll.
