The Zanoni shooting estate is situated just 45 minutes from Madrid airport within the town of Tarancon. It is famous for some of the best Partridge shooting in Spain and even Europe. With over 35,000 hectares of exceptional topography, the estate is varied in its makeup with swathes of Mediterranean forests, Rosemary and Thyme Oaks, large sweeping cereal crops and farmland, all of which is the perfect habitat for the Red-Legged Partridge. Over the past decade, these little birds have thrived, and Spain now has some of the biggest and best populations found anywhere in the world.
Guided by Pablo De Vicente, one of Spains most respected guides, and his team, you’ll enjoy some of the most exciting, action-packed shooting available on the continent. With a range of highly varied drives, the birds present themselves in all manner of different ways, exploding through coveys, bursting through the thickets and firing themselves into the open valleys; there’s no doubt that the Partridge is one of the most challenging targets. Travelling guns will find the estate an utter treat.
If you’re passionate about wing shooting, combined with first-class hospitality, service and accommodation, then Partridge shooting in Spain and the Zanoni shooting estate is the perfect scenario for you to curb your shooting cravings.
The Red-Legged Partridge is the queen and the emblematic species of all small game and one of the world’s most popular and beautiful birds. There’s no doubting that the Partridge shooting in Spain is some of the best found anywhere in the world.
The birds feature a sandy brown colouration, with black and brown barring down their wings and a distinctive ‘black necklace’ or dark band around their neck. They can grow to around 30cm to 35cm, with a wingspan of 47cm to 50cm and weigh anywhere between 18oz and 20oz. They’re exceptionally swift and can fly up to speeds of 35 miles per hour. With their deceiving wing beat, these skilful birds are, without a doubt, some of the most challenging quarries to shoot. They have the natural ability to hug the landscape, presenting themselves close to the ground or at high altitude, always finding ways to test the attention and speed of the hunter; it’s these things that make them such a desirable quarry for thousands of wing shooters from all around the globe.
On the Zanoni shooting estate, the shooting is as varied as the landscape, and each day you can find yourself of a different driven shoot, shooting amongst a different set of surroundings. However, one thing which doesn’t change is the vast number of birds available. Due to the variety of drives the lodge has at their disposal, they often obtain results between 500 and 1,000 Partridges per day. With a guide with you for the duration of your shoot, the lodges qualified staff will ensure your only concern is to aim, shoot and enjoy.
On the Zanoni shooting estate, the day starts with a good breakfast, a customary safety speech and the drawing of pegs, known as ‘Tomelot’, before you get picked up and taken to the estate. The Lodge is situated just 45 minutes drive from Madrid, and it’s a very well connected route, with the shooting from the Lodge less than 35 minutes away. Once you arrive at the first drive of the day, you’ll get joined by a secretarios or loader, who will have your gun and cartridges ready for you; they will then be with you all day.
One thing that makes Zanoni extra popular amongst travelling guns is the fact it’s a very traditional shoot and follows many long-standing traditions and customs, such as the food in the field, the retriever dogs, and the natural posts. The days will consist of four or five drives with a short break between each one for a snack and refreshments; these usually consist of famous Spanish Aperitifs (Tapas). Between the fourth and fifth drive, all the action you will stop for around an hour and the guides and secretarios will set up the tables for a field lunch.
From then on, you will continue shooting until about 3:30 pm with one or two more exciting drives before the day in the field comes to an end. You’ll then get driven back to the Lodge for an afternoon for tea/coffee or cocktail if you’d prefer and a bit of relaxation before dinner.

A holiday to the Zanoni shooting estate is a generally laid back affair, and the physical exertion is minimal. Each day you’ll get picked up by the lodges 4×4’s and driven the short distance to the hunting grounds; from there, there’s just a short walk to the drives, so a sturdy pair of boots is recommended. The most exertion comes from the shooting itself, as the action can be fast and furious and Partridge shooting in Spain for the big bags of the fast-flying RedLeg can be punishing on the shoulder. To help combat this, we advise taking a quality shoulder pad or shooting vest.
Partridge shooting in Spain is perfect for the enthusiastic game shooter as the thrill of some well-presented birds flushed out from the sweeping arable land is an experience that will stay etched in your memory for many years. However, to get the most out of the shoot and the Estate, a reasonable amount of skill and experience is required, even though your loader will take care of loading your cartridges quickly, the speed and trajectory of the presented game will be pretty demanding during specific drives.
The Spanish shooting season runs from October to the end of February; however, this is extended into early March in some locations. As a result, shooting in Spain offers the ideal way of extending the traditional UK shooting season abroad whilst enjoying the warmer climate that the country has to offer.
