Cenicientos Lodge Spain

Cenicientos shooting lodge is nestled deep in the province of Toledo, just 75 minutes south of Madrid, and offers some of the best Partridge shooting in Spain and even Europe. With over 9,000 hectares of exceptional topography, the estate is varied in its makeup and features the perfect habitat for the Red-Legged Partridge. Over the past decade, these little birds have thrived, and Spain now has some of the biggest and best populations found anywhere in the world.

Cenicientos is renowned for its exceptional grounds, including various undulating areas where the Red-legged Partridge thrives and flies effortlessly. Its diverse landscape provides the travelling guns with many exciting shooting challenges, from ravines and steep valleys to shrubs, thickets and small trees. Depending on how hard or easy you like your sport, each backdrop offers the hunter a different experience.

Expertly run by Javier López de Carrizosa Mora-Figueroa, a passionate shot and highly regarded within Spain for providing truly memorable sport and fantastic hospitality, the shooting days are some of the best and highly sought after. Each drive is unique, and Javier will present birds from hilltops, over ravines and undulating arable ground that will test all of your shooting skills.

Red-Legged Partridge

With Spain’s proximity to North Africa, the population of Red-Legged Partridge has thrived, with the countries dry, hot climate ideal for the birds breeding and development. A pretty little game bird with sandy brown colouration, black and brown barring down its wings and a ‘black necklace’ or dark band around its neck, it can grow to around 30cm to 35cm, with a wingspan of 47cm to 50cm and weigh anywhere between 18oz and 20oz.

Without a doubt, the Red-Legged Partridge shooting or RegLeg as their known, is some of the most exhilarating game bird pursuits you’ll come across. With the ability to fly up to speeds of 35 miles per hour and with its deceiving wing beat, these skilful birds are some of the most challenging quarries to shoot. Expertly hugging the landscape, presenting themselves close to the ground or at high altitude, they always find ways to test the attention and speed of the hunter.

At Cenicientos Lodge, the shooting is as varied as the landscape, and each day you can find yourself of a different driven shoot, shooting amongst a different set of surroundings. However, one thing which doesn’t change is the vast number of birds available. Due to the variety of drives the lodge has at their disposal, they can offer traditional “Spanish” driven days using double guns and achieving bags from 500-800 birds and days for teams using single guns and shooting bags of 300-400 birds.

A Typical Days Partridge Shooting In Spain

At Cenicientos Lodge, the day starts with a good breakfast, a customary safety speech and the drawing of pegs, known as ‘Tomelot’, before you get picked up and taken to the estate. The Lodge is situated just 75 minutes drive from Madrid, and it’s a very well connected route, with the shooting from the Lodge less than 20 minutes away. Once you arrive at the first drive of the day, you’ll get joined by a secretarios or loader, who will have your gun and cartridges ready for you; they will then be with you all day.

After the first couple of drives, you’ll stop for a leisurely Spanish elevenses, including some tasty snacks like Tacos and some Oloroso, which is a variety of Spanish fortified wine and a bit of a Spanish shooting tradition. It’s very similar to that of a heavy, dark, medium-sweet sherry. After that, and after the third drive, you will stop again, this time for some lunch, before the shooting will continue to the 4th and 5th drives of the day, depending on your chosen programme or until your bag limit gets reached.

You will retreat to the Lodge around 4.00pm for some well-deserved rest, even a siesta, cup of tea, or even a glass of wine or two. Generally in the evening, guests meet around 7.30pm for a cocktail before a beautiful three-course meal gets served around 8.30pm.

Javier López De Carrizosa Mora-Figueroa

The shoots at Cenicientos Lodge are run by Javier López de Carrizosa Mora-Figueroa, a name famous in Spain and further afield in the shooting community.

Javier was born in Jerez in southern Spain. From a young age, he accompanied his father on wild Partridge shoots on various family estates throughout the country, soon learning the art of what it meant to run a successful one.

Later on, he combined his Law Studies with working for the Agency Espacaza, running big game hunts, but after graduating from Law School, he decided not to practice it but follow his passion, becoming a shoot manager for Fuentelfresno; a well know partridge shoot. A few years later, he ran Gonzalo Banus’ shoot at Cenicientos for three years.

Since 2010 Javier has been running his shoot; driven by tradition, high quality and value for money, his organization is becoming synonymous with good shooting, not just in Spain but all across Europe.
