Valencia is the third-largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona and is situated on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the western part of the Mediterranean. Famed for its port, the 5th busiest in all of Europe and the busiest in the Mediterranean Sea, architecture, cathedral, arts, and the birthplace of paella. But a little known fact is that it’s increased heavily in popularity over the last few years as a big fish destination for Bluefin Tuna, producing some incredible results.
Our partners Green Flake Fishing, were the original pioneers of this up and coming fishery and were the first sportfishing operation in the Marina of Valencia, offering travelling anglers the chance to fish for the biggest Tuna found anywhere in Europe. During the summer months of June and July, Valencia transforms into the epicentre of European big game fishing and regularly throws up huge specimens of over 600lb. So if you’ve always dreamt of battling with a big Tuna and experiencing a true Sportfishing getaway just a short flight away from the UK, Valencia is the perfect destination for you.
New for us in 2022, this hidden gem of a fishing destination, is often overlooked and not on the radar of many travelling rods; however, it has enormous potential and offers anglers the opportunity to sample some exciting rod bending action just a short flight away.
Bluefin Tuna are a highly prized sportfish and an iconic species the world over; they have been recorded up to 1,500lb in weight and rival the Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, and Swordfish as the king of the big game species. They are warm-blooded fish, which can live for up to forty years and grow over four metres in length, and are native to both the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, roaming the vast blue waters searching for food.
Due to their size, speed, and power they display as an apex predator, many anglers search the world high and low for these stunning fish, and they’re certainly on many anglers’ bucket lists. Once you have hooked a giant Bluefin Tuna, you will be in for one of the most challenging fights of your life, they possess enormous muscular strength that they use for propulsion, and fights can last anything from half-hour to over four hours.
A ferocious predator that can dive to depths of over 1000m, they typically hunt in the upper layers of the ocean, feeding on small fish such as Sardines, Herring, Mackerel and other invertebrates such as Squid and Crustaceans.

The fishing off the coast of Valencia in the Mediterranean is based purely on the biggest Bluefin Tuna. Of course, there are other species to target and catch, but the big Bluefins reign supreme in these rich waters.
One of the most effective ways of catching these hard-hitting brutes and the most popular technique used by our guides is chumming on the drift. Small dead fish or chunks of fish are introduced into the water to create an attractive chum trail, designed to draw the Tuna from the depths and to the vicinity of the boat where anglers’ baits are waiting.
When Tuna fishing there is one common theme that needs to be adhered to: the tackle is solid and suitable for the job. A 300, 400, and even 500lb Bluefin is one of the hardest fighting fish in the world and will test tackle and the angler to the max.
Note: One of the real benefits of our destination in Valencia is that all tackle is included, so you don’t have to worry about buying lots of new kit before your trip.
For exploring the waters of Valenica, our destination utilises two boats, the Wellcraft 232 Fisherman and the Scout 260 Sportfish. Both feature state-of-the-art American hulls imported directly from their respective boat builders in America and are some of the fastest in the entire region.
Wellcraft 232 Fisherman – Measures 7.10m in length and 2.58m in width and can carry a total of seven crew members and a skipper, although it will comfortably hold four anglers. It’s equipped with a Mercury Verado 300 horsepower engine.
Scout 260 Sportfish – Is slightly bigger than the Wellcraft, measuring 7.98m in length and 2.69m in width. It can carry a total of seven crew members and a skipper, although it will comfortably hold five anglers. It’s equipped with a two Honda 150 horsepower engines.
The boats also feature a vivarium, Soft-top equipped with all the necessary rod holders to transport all the fishing equipment and rod holders embedded in the stern. As well as a central console, central seat and T-Top at angles of 30º and 0º; aft seat bench, bow seat lockers both starboard and port, 100-litre refrigerator and space both in bow lockers and centre console to store luggage.
When big game fishing in Spain, absolutely all the tackle included onboard the boats is strictly high-end equipment, not just rods and reels, but everything from hooks, line and leaders.

I booked this as a family fishing holiday and I wasn't disappointed, the trip gets a big thumbs up from me, the wife and the kids - the accommodation and location were perfect. It was nice to be able to mix a few days of fishing with a few days of relaxing and exploring. If you've never been to Valencia I would recommend it, it's a fantastic city.
A short flight from the UK, a few days away in the sun, and most importantly a big Tuna landed. A massive thank you to everyone involved in making this trip a success, from the guys in the office to the guides on the boat. From the moment I left home to the moment I returned everything ran so smoothly and I'd love to go back.
I never knew it was possible to enjoy this style of 'big game' fishing so close to home, which could be a bad thing for my wallet, as I'll definitely be going back! I had one aim for the trip and that was to simply catch a Tuna and I'm pleased to say it was mission accomplished, with a beast estimated at over 200lb.
Adrian, I thank you with all my heart that you managed to fulfil my dream. I visited with one aim and that was a big Blue Fin and you helped me achieve this. It's something I will never, ever forget.
Until I made the initial enquiry, I didn't even know it was possible to enjoy such exciting fishing so close to home. The short flights and package really suited me, and it's something I'll definitely do again.
From start to finish, the trip was excellent. We were told the fishing was a little slower than normal, but it was still brilliant. The guides were absolutely first class and a credit to the operation; we had great fun with them.
Without doubt the best sport fishing trip I've been on!
the captains all went out of their way to try to ensure we at least hooked a bluefin everyday, and we did, this was not a trip driven by time, it felt like it was driven by the need to keep the fisherman happy and give us the best chance of a hook-up, really good guides who knew their stuff, and weren't just going through the motions as some do.
highly recommended!
Hi Rob, thank you for taking the time to fill out your feedback on your recent trip to Valencia targeting the Tuna. So glad they looked after you and you managed a few big Tuna. Whats next? We will have to cath up soon, tight lines, Paul

So, if you are a true specimen hunter, we can’t think of a better place to head to for a fish of a lifetime. Perfect for a family getaway with it only being a couple of hour’s flight.
